My family and I took a cruise a few years back during hurricane season, and it was truly a great experience. Lots of people on board were sick of it but I found it entertaining to watch massive waves come at the ship out my window at night :p
Knowing how modern cruise lines love to nickle and dime you to death I wouldn't be surprised if they were selling Dramamine down on deck 5 for fifty bucks a pop. Nice vid however.
@sjtom57 Don't be silly. The Dramamine would be cheap. But it would have to be prescribed by the ships doctor, for whom fifty bucks is just his evening bar tab.
Seriously, yours is a funny insight into the modern cruise ship. Things used to be generally all-inclusive. Now it's truly nickel and dime.
Well, I can understand the outrage. But, hard as I try as a multiple cruiser, can, t find fault with the cruise line. We all know the Hurricane season. Best deals. Deal with it. I ve had to re schedule. But for this video, have a question to who posted it. Sir, you have a beautiful wife. You choose to video your Ocean View stateroom. Then you choose to bitch about the cruise. Suggestion. Your Beautiful wife, Carnival, Late Sept, . Balcony. Need I say more?
@starr522 Not sure where I was bitching. Check my comments, below, for the many times I said more or less what you just did. We are avid cruisers and never held the weather against any cruise line. It was just so unusual (in our experience) that it was worth videotaping. The only thing I'll disagree with you on is my "beautiful wife." Yes, she's beautiful, but she is my sister. Ewwwww!
@smartdon007 Sadly, you book cruises way out in advance of knowing whether the storm will come. And there are no refunds. I should know, obviously, that hurricane season is the same time each year. But that's when the best cruise deals are, too.
Very nice video, thanks for posting this. I only went on one cruise before but I know I would not be able to handle that one you were on, I would have gotten so sick!! Thanks for sharing - I like your comments, it was a nice touch.
@mamachops777 Please know this was very unusual--thus the video. Most cruises are on ships where you can't even feel the boat moving. You go to sleep in one place and wake up, refreshed, in the next place. In that sense it's quite possibly the perfect way to travel if it goes between the places you like to visit.
Oh, dear, dear, dear!! The captain is giving information over the blower - fair enough - he reminds guests to use hand rails along passage ways and on stairs - fair enough - the ship is indeed pitching and tossing in every direction - and he ends by saying "... thanks for your attention and have a wonderful day on board the Zenith."
I smile at the thought of those unfortunates upping the chuck into their chunder bags having a truly wonderful day!
Cool video! I remember TS Gordon when it hit the area I lived in Florida. It wasn't an exceptionally "bad" storm, but it flooded everything and downed a lot of trees and power lines. Thankfully we lived on a lake, and because we lived in the middle of nowhere--no power=no water, so we bathed in the lake for a few days. Anyway, thanks for sharing the video.
Why go on a cruise to begin with. Stay on land, not in some glorified barge full of old sick people. Add norwalk virus too the mix and big storms, ..no thanks.
@SavingNines I think you have that reversed. The lower levels move less than higher levels. I agree that the bow moves more than the stern as the boat pitches.
@SavingNines wrong, the higher levels on a ship swing more then the lower levels, it is amplified up on top. The bow also pitches more than the stern does.
hi , i was wondering what the name of the ship you were on was called ? because i went on celebrity cruise lines and the boat looked just like that . thank-you :)
I was on this same cruise ship in June 04 on my honeymoon, from NYC to Bermuda. The Zenith is small as far as cruise ships go but it was a great time. best vacation of my life. Cant wait to go again. Celebrity is a great cruise line. I believe this ship has been retired since. Celebrity crew was great. not much you can do about the weather. Ride it out.
OMG is was on this cruise! i remember it well because everybody including the crew was getting sick, and the next morning the entire boat wreaked of throw up
was it really in 1994 ? then it's only 2 months after "estonia" sinking...estonia was a big ferry too on the Baltic Sea...over 800 people were died...i'm from estonia and the ferry was named after my country :)
i love the guy on the speaker "enjoy yourself" YEAH RIGHT! how can i enjoy myself when i am 2 seconds from barfing onto some guys face (hopefully the speaker guy)
It will be a good time....the weather is a bit cooler.....enjoy your cruise...remember the captain will do what everl possible avoid very bad or dangerous weather. they want their guests to have a wonderful experience, not a bad one...... and safety on a ship is of the highest priority..
Come to Iceland, and i show you some real storm waves my friend. Iceland have it all, storm, sun, rain, snow and on and on....all this in same day actually ;)
i was on p&o cruises the oceana and we hit a storm while crossing the bay of biscaye between France and England and it was frightening, at one point the ship turned direction and the we were tilted that i thought we were going to capsize but im hoping to get on another cruise in the near fucture and just hope we avoid what id experenced.
@GirlyTennis123 The Titanic also hit icebergs, I seriously doubt that will happen going to Mexico. On a side note I remember seeing old newsreels with some that had been rescued from titanic and there was such a class structure then that all they cared about was the possesions they lost, no one talked about the poor (I think) 1500 people that perrished.
when i was like twelve or so(im 16 now) we went on the norwegian sun and we were getting chased by hurricane gustav. this is exaactly what it was like lol. it was kinda cool. no one was scared and people kept gettin drunk. i was walkin down the hall and there was two old ladies crawling on the floor with drinks in their hands. they couldnt walk because of the boat rocking and they were drunk lol. they were haven so much fun!
@kiraklas No discount. In fact, a friend of mine was on a Carnival cruise out of Florida that ran into weather and didn't make a single stop. It just sailed around in the storm for the week, then came home. No refund, no discount, no free drinks, nada. On this Celebrity cruise, certainly the staff onboard worked very hard to make the best of it. You hear how chipper the daily announcement is, and they scheduled as many indoor activities as they could. So they deserve credit for trying.
@UberGenesis Nope. Well, yes, I guess, given that I live in America, so I'm in the top 1% of the world in terms of wealth. But in terms of America, I'm an average joe. (And the secret is that it was my sister's camera, anyway.)
@kiraklas, there's probably a line or two about that in the contract you sign. The shipping company can not affect the weather, so why should they give you refunds and discounts? It's force majeure.
Sorry dude...11 stories up from the water...NO...you are not. 6 or 7 but you sure as Hell aint 11. I have been on too many cruises...this must be your first.
The only way I would ever go on a cruise would be if they could guarantee a ride like this. Otherwise, I'd rather fly somewhere and dive for seven days than float around on a ship with 1000 people I don't know and don't care to know.
Absolutely you should go on your first cruise. This is rare. And you didn't see the video of the end of the cruise where we had a blast scuba diving in St. Thomas and enjoying beautiful (and flat) blue ocean for the trip home. Cruises are awesome!
@twbflorida oh ok! yea me and my wife never been on 1 b4 and we was jus scanning thru here b4 we determine if we wanted to take that cruise , and found your video and we was likewhoa!! hold up!!! that didnt look so good hahahah, but yea ok ill take your word for it, thanks
I work on cruise ships they have go a lot bigger and can handel bad weather so much better...dint worry about it if you dont want rough weather dont go in winter, its the winter months that kick up stormy water....
I went on the Pride of America in Hawaii and our ship's pools were similar to that (right next to each other) also we never had bad weather but even the small waves made the water in the pool go higher than the ones in ur pool, they were so bad they said u had 2 be 13+ to be in the pool wen it was like that!!
I know each ship has a varying degree of stability, seemingly by age of the ship. The Pride might be an older and smaller ship. This was the Zenith--probably an 80s build, nothing like the behemoths being launched today. The big ships probably would have smoothly moved through this storm.

lol im the one dispatched to save them, and to be honest it seems like its pretty bad but there is not much wind, this is really not that bad of a storm i bet it got worse later on for them....
@IcelandEmt its bad up there, but ive been in all waters and the Southern ocean is the most pissed off of them all, fallowed by the North Sea and the Bearing sea
great video! i was on the zeniths sister ship horizon. we cruised to bermuda had an awesome time until it was time to come home. we ran into a storm at sea. that was very freaky
During The PREFECT STORM I was out in a 52 ft. party fishing boat off the coast of N.J. When it hit us we were in 25 to 35 foot swells. The captain showed us 2 boats 102 ft.long and said they will have to stay out, But we can turn and run for shore. 50 other people were sleeping off thier drunks. SO I asked to be tied to the back deck railings Then We Surfed that boat down the fronts of the waves till we got back to shore.WHat a great night hat was. my best time ever out on the ocean.
@twbflorida NAW It was so i didn't get washed over board. it was a two deck boat and the water would get up on the top deck ,when we crashed a wave. then come washing down the stairs at the back of the boat. I have Clips on my ropes. But I know the ocean some i knew it was just going to be a great ride.
That Captain knew how to get that boast on a wave and we rode one for about 10 minutes .that made our trip back in much faster. we saved over an hour going in by riding waves back.
just when ona royalcarriaban cruise just came back the lat day of the cruise we had a tropical storm i was stunned what happened why do these capatins go into these storms why dont they go around it
HEy, i have been on a Celebrity cruise ship too and recognized it at the very second. we had the same storm, it was probably even worse. just what was suprising it was in the north sea. LUV CELEBRITY! Been on it twice
No, Jimmy. The ship sailed from Fort Lauderdale into the Eastern Caribbean. It reminded me of the North Sea, which seems to look like this on any given day.
Thanks for posting this video.. Just got back form my first cruise last week and I was thinking about what could go wrong which is what led me to your video. Good stuff, sorry you had to experience such a bad cruise..
You are not alone. The cruise was like a ghost ship for several days. Nobody walking around, nobody in the restaurants. Everybody was in their cabins, puking. So my brother-in-law and I had the ship to ourselves. I think everybody thought we were a gay couple because it was always just the two of us--the rest of our group was never with us.
I took a med cruise. We rode out a storm on a small ship between Italy and Greece. 40 foot waves. It lasted about 20 hours or so. I never felt sick at all but most of the people on the ship were sick. It wouldn't stop me from taking a cruise.
Excellent video - especially for 1994. Digital Cameras were not commonplace, back then. My girlfriend & I (now my wife) were the last flight to leave Ft. Lauderdale Airport on a Delta Airlines B757 before they closed the airport, due to TS Gordon. I've been on about 15 cruises & my best was on American Hawaii's Constitution -Sept. '92- we were docked in Lihue, Kauai when Hurricane Iniki approached us with 160MPH winds. We left & rode ii out in 50 & 60 footers circling Oahu & Maui. Exciting.
I wasn't going to say anything because dar359 generously complimented my video. But, yeah, this was shot on Hi8 analog camera. I finally got a MiniDV camera in 2001.
haha the cruise director "and have a great day aboard the Celebrity Zenith!" meanwhile everyones miserable. I've been in weather like that in the North Sea on a cruise. It was fun!
My family and I took a cruise a few years back during hurricane season, and it was truly a great experience. Lots of people on board were sick of it but I found it entertaining to watch massive waves come at the ship out my window at night :p

You should try to work in Icelandic troller, like i did.... This is calm sea vs: Icelandic winter weather... Regards ;)
IcelandEmt 2 years ago 4
Work? I only want to be on a boat for play. Plus I'm sure your troller was smaller and the waves bigger, so that is a dangerous combination.
twbflorida 2 years ago
@IcelandEmt its bad up there, but ive been in all waters and the Southern ocean is the most pissed off of them all, fallowed by the North Sea and the Bearing sea

great video! i was on the zeniths sister ship horizon. we cruised to bermuda had an awesome time until it was time to come home. we ran into a storm at sea. that was very freaky

It really awes me, how much habitual splendor can go floating gently ♥

It is great that they kept their cool in such dangerous weather. You all obviously know how to cruise then!

SO I asked to be tied to the back deck railings Then We Surfed that boat down the fronts of the waves till we got back to shore.WHat a great night hat was. my best time ever out on the ocean.
brokenbrush 2 years ago 3
The back deck railing? So you're last to go down when the ship sinks? I'd have been asked to be tied to a lifeboat. And wearing 5 life preservers.
twbflorida 2 years ago
@twbflorida NAW It was so i didn't get washed over board. it was a two deck boat and the water would get up on the top deck ,when we crashed a wave. then come washing down the stairs at the back of the boat. I have Clips on my ropes. But I know the ocean some i knew it was just going to be a great ride.
That Captain knew how to get that boast on a wave and we rode one for about 10 minutes .that made our trip back in much faster. we saved over an hour going in by riding waves back.

I don't know what was worse the bad weather or the cruise director's annoying voice?
1stinkylove 2 years ago
interesting...but after a few days of storm it would be enough :) is it possible to sleep then ?
I was never on a cruise ship, I was only sailing on small sailing boats in the coast area and I didn't encounter such a bad weather...

HEy, i have been on a Celebrity cruise ship too and recognized it at the very second. we had the same storm, it was probably even worse. just what was suprising it was in the north sea. LUV CELEBRITY! Been on it twice

Thats what we sail for... Awesome!!!!
SeaTravelr123 2 years ago
was this in the north sea did you just say? please reply
jimmymagicpants91 2 years ago
No, Jimmy. The ship sailed from Fort Lauderdale into the Eastern Caribbean. It reminded me of the North Sea, which seems to look like this on any given day.

Awesome footage. Did the weather ever clear up?
oeshpdog2 2 years ago
Yeah, it was beautiful. Classic Caribbean cruise weather, sunny, blue seas, blue skies. We had a blast for the last 3 days.

i hate rough seas its making me wanna...........PUKE !
JuanPapaNicolao 2 years ago
You are not alone. The cruise was like a ghost ship for several days. Nobody walking around, nobody in the restaurants. Everybody was in their cabins, puking. So my brother-in-law and I had the ship to ourselves. I think everybody thought we were a gay couple because it was always just the two of us--the rest of our group was never with us.

I took a med cruise. We rode out a storm on a small ship between Italy and Greece. 40 foot waves. It lasted about 20 hours or so. I never felt sick at all but most of the people on the ship were sick. It wouldn't stop me from taking a cruise.
falconbrother1 2 years ago
Excellent video - especially for 1994. Digital Cameras were not commonplace, back then. My girlfriend & I (now my wife) were the last flight to leave Ft. Lauderdale Airport on a Delta Airlines B757 before they closed the airport, due to TS Gordon. I've been on about 15 cruises & my best was on American Hawaii's Constitution -Sept. '92- we were docked in Lihue, Kauai when Hurricane Iniki approached us with 160MPH winds. We left & rode ii out in 50 & 60 footers circling Oahu & Maui. Exciting.

Cameras were not commonplace? Common bud, its 1994, not 1964!
djbis 2 years ago
I wasn't going to say anything because dar359 generously complimented my video. But, yeah, this was shot on Hi8 analog camera. I finally got a MiniDV camera in 2001.
