Hendrix overrated as a guitarist? I agree that techincal achievement has come along way since Jimi's day, but he done things that no one else had done before!! Alright he doesn't play like Joe Satriani, but so fucking what, he had bags of soul, and originality...... I can't wait to hear Marko7T4 do something even half as pioneering! And we can talk about how overrated he was 40 years later!
@albuhkirky As for Hendrix not being important technically, in 1989 I interned with someone who in two decades earlier interned at ELECTRIC LADYLAND.
At THAT time Hendrix was ALREADY trying to get things recorded differently. It was the absolute beginning of digital audio recording technology, and SMPTE marking. It just wasn't codified and industry standard.
Faked? No way, I could tell of you were faking, and even more so with the slowed down version. I can sort of understand though, because you SO totally nail it so perfectly that one might think so.
first of all thank you for the slowed down version ... I have got a question, are you sure that the notes for the tapping are correct? ... I think thats not the case...
GREAT!. It sounds beautiful slowed down. It could be turned into a love song just from those melodies. The man is/was a genius, and anyone who can do that perfectly is at least quite good.
MJ was already very famous, obviously, before the Beat It recording, but he wasn't considered cool in the white rock community, and this song was his attempt to get a foot in the door into that (white rock) market. When radio stations got the record in the mail (esp rock and AOR stations), it had written in BIG letters on it "EDDIE VAN HALEN GUITAR SOLO", and the rest is history.
Alright.. The equipment I use is pretty straightforward and cheap. An Indonesian Fender Squier (where I recently fitted some original Strat pickups on the neck and mid, but not for this video), a BOSS GT6 - Effects processor (which I tweaked by feel as I always do) and it's plugged into a Marshall CD-15. Very cheap basic setup
3) Not just tapping .. all kinds of harmonics, variations, volume swells...an endless list. How can I not respect his genius. Most of his tone lies in his fingers. People don't seem to realise that and if anyone does any Van halen stuff, he better do it EXACTLY to understand his genius. Eddie rules the universe. I would give my life to watch a Van Halen concert live!!
@jareds1007 no worries; why do you think she is just trying to be known by Orianthi ??
But, of course, lets not forget about Jennifer Batten. She covered Beat It, LIVE and stood in performance next to MJ on stage and featured with one excellent blonde faux hawk.
Thank you so much. I played this live years agao and the solo was so totally crap. Lots of noise and effects. I never knew how to hit the right notes. You're excellent my friend. Now if only youtube would have existed in the eighties I would have been awesome LOL!!!! Any more solos out there of this callibre?
I know exactly what you're talking about, but I think I managed to play this way back when (1992 or so) and I think it still was pretty close, but I needed a half decent walkman and a load of listening. I do like youtube a lot and agree that if this was there in the eighties, some of us would have very decent bands of amazing musical quality today!
Thanks Jill. You're welcome .. Always appreciate being appreciated cos lots of work needs to go in over the years to play a small little solo piece like "Jump" ... hardly lasting a few seconds
HI.... A great big thank you for those who liked it. I really think this system is better than tabs...playing slow....cos u can hear the guitar tone as well and get the feel Eddie gets" It's in the fingers. Eddie Van Halen is my GOD!!! Don't know how to explain it, but the man's a genius & he doesn't even know it!!
Great to hear you respect Eddie. I think many people on youtube are using his solos just to show off almost to say 'hey he wasnt that great cos I can play it'
When people transcribe twenty year old solos written by geniuses they need to remember and respect the artist and then go learn to write their own shit
Thanks man. Eddie Van Halen for me is God. He is the reason I learnt guitar. For me he is more influential than hendrix. People just don't know that 1) He discovered Mr. Floyd Rose who came up with the double locking whammy system we all use today. He actually asked him to design something for him. 2) Michael Jackson first became famous because of Eddie
even tho Hendrix pours more soul into his masterpieces(meaning more than one and all in the span of 3 years.... Verses Eddie's fretboard frenzy guitar leads....Eddie did have major influence on rock and popularized tapping as his swagger in the guitar
I think your Jackson comment is bollocks. I dont remember Eddie playing on any of the Jackson 5 songs. I do agree with your Hendrix comment though. Ive always though he was overrated as a guitarist and if he hadnt have died then he would have remained mediocre.
Eddie Van Halen is the guitarist for Michael Jackson's Beat it video. It's a well known fact and Van Halen were a much bigger and well known band. They were a rage!!!. Eddie has a huge role to play in MJ becoming so famous in his solo career. Check out the solo in "Beat It"
Yeah mate I know he played the solo in Beat It but if you check out MJ's career he was famous well before beat it. His use of video and his innovative dance style were more well known than the fact that EVH played a solo on 1 song. If you ask anyone about Thriller, the album that Beat It is on, they are going to comment on video for the Thriller song rather than EVH's solo. As a Van Halen fan you seem to have a blinkered view on this one a bit.

OK...'well known fact'??? Errrr....show me proof. Link? Anything? Can't do that? What a surprise! You're delusional sweety. I'm not actually a fan of MJ really but Van Halen weren't even discovered till 1978, when Michael Jackson would have been recording 'Off The Wall' which sold 29 MILLION copies before Eddie Van Halen even stepped into a studio to record just the solo on 'Beat It' for 'Thriller'........
@Marko7T4 Eddie did play the solo on the Michael Jackson song "Beat It". BUT, Michael Jackson was already a superstar, and had already been a superstar, when Eddie played the solo on it. Thank you so much. It's really hard to do Eddie justice. He is the greatest guitarist ever for me!!! and there could not be a nicer compliment. Thanks again.
