  • it seems like keria k. tried to copy the way jennifer spoke, and all the mannerisms of lizzy portrayed by ehle. though they are both good actors, i think jennifer ehle is better at acting out elizabeth

  • @chocolateyum011

I agree totally. Even her facial expressions sometimes matched Ehle. The 2005 movie was not true at all to the book.

  • @lapagan01

Yeah, the 1995 version is more accurate to the book. Although, it did have a lot more time to include the events. I think the 2005 movie was modernized, and the director made it so that the audience would rely more on facial expressions of all the characters than dialogue. (i love both of the versions though!!)

  • oh how lydia annoys me...

  • Jennifer Ehle does such a great job playing as Lizzy! She just fits the role so well. Colin Firth fits the role as well..it's just a bit creepy how he stares at Lizzy...which is understandable because in the book he's madly in love with her

  • aww I love how sweet Jane is

  • Oh Mary, I absolutely love you.

  • ive always felt bad for charlotte having to marry collins, i mean she was so scared to end up an old maid and he was her only chance

  • I think Mr Collins should marry Lady Catherine's fireplace. He talks about it enough!

  • i absolutely think that those officers are laughing at lydia and kitty all the time after having left them.

  • I like this portrayal of Charlotte Lucas I think a lot of the other versions miss the point of Charlotte, she isn't stupid she's just different from Lizzie

  • The best Mr. Wickham. This one is like the opposite of Snape, perfectly, as the guy who looks good, but is bad.

  • "She's marrying one of the stupidest men in England!"

You can say that again >.<

  • @Rosebloom12 I can see your point. but you also have to look at the whole marriage from Mr Collins' and Charlottes point of vieww. Jane Austen describes Charlotte as not very handsome and very practical and it wasn't that far out of the way in those times to marry for money rather than for affection because it was the only way to secure their future, as Jane Austen says in the preamble of the book.

  • This actress is too pretty to play Charlotte.

  • there's nothing better than men in uniform. They look so cute!

  • Isn't it kind of weird that Charlotte is 27 and Mr. Collins is only 25?

  • @veevoo12 haha cougar!

  • @veevoo12 Well, we actually don't know quite how old he is - just that he's "about" 25. And I suppose back then men could marry older women than themselves, just as today.

  • mary is such a pain in the ass, and so are kitty and lydia

i dont get it why dont their parents try to controle them !!!!!!!

  • i think mary needs a good romp, maybe that way she'll stick her nose off the air. lol

  • I agree with you, ezzie4zac. Jennifer Ehle suits Elizabeth Bennett's character so well, I think. I will not say she is better than Keira Knightley; they are both great actresses. But I do like this version better.

I like Caroline and Jane in the Hollywood version better. I think a woman of Caroline's upbringing would act and look more like the other one. And Jane is so beautiful in the other one as well. Of course she is beautiful in this one, just different. Roman-looking. Love BBC.

  • They scoff, but honestly, Mary is right in everything she says, if untactful.

  • @Rosebloom12 This whole series is the essence of conservatism. I don't think neo-liberal post-Woodstock women's lib is anything for Mary to aspire to either. Nor do I think Gloria Steinam would be particularly proud of Liz curtseying to every man. You assume too much. How do you know she doesn't put things into practice? How do you know whom she reads? You're just being reactionary at this point.

  • @Marinealpha hahahaha omg you totaly read what i worte the wrong way lol

  • What's the servant doing calling Jane "Ma'am" she's not mistress of the house and shes unmarried at that point.

  • I dislike Charlotte

  • Isn't Jennifer Ehle's accent a bit funny ? I can't really say, cause I'm French, but I do think it's a bit unusual, never heard that kind of accent before.

I absolutely love this version, not very famous in my country unfortunately

And to those who should sleep but are watching this instead, I say : same here :)

  • @mokilepoissonrouge Ahhh...good ear! You may be picking up a bit of the mix she has. She was born here in the US but shifted back and forth between here and the UK. It does tend to alter the accent. I know from first hand experience. :)

  • @MyFondestMemories Right, thanks :)

I actually read that she was half american and half british. I thought it was probably what explained her accent, but I still wanted to check and make sure I wasn't imagining it :)

Since you seem to know what you're talking about, do you think you could tell me what are the precise differences between her accent and an "ordinary" english one ? Even though I noticed they weren't the same I can't quite put my finger on what makes them different.

  • I like how Jane and Elizabeth thank the servants in this version. I don't remember reading any, "Thank you"s in the book nor hearing it in the 2005 version. I feel so bad for servants back then; they were really treated as nobodies. I love reading books that show lower class point of views from the Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian eras.

  • my eyes are burning with sleep but I can't.stop.watching!

  • @potterlove It's just the same with me! :D

  • Have I been watching too many british movies and tv shows or they don't have an english accent in this episode, because I don't seem to notice it.

  • Have I been watching too many british movies and tv shows or they don't have an english accent in this episode, because I don't seem to notice it.

  • I laughed out loud at the end of this video when Mary speaks and Lydia gets flabbergasted. Lydia is silly and childsih, but she's funny and real.

  • @Ariella24 They could have both taken it in different ways: Jane might think that she plans to have Bingley marry Georgiana, Lizzie that she plans to marry Darcy herself. However, it is most probably that it is the former, as it would make sense that Lizzie was then concerned for her sister's happiness, as at this point, Lizzie is not even sure of her feelings for Darcy, never mind speaking of them to her sister. :) But I agree it is interesting how both could be Caroline's possible meanings.

  • Such simple, nice conversations.

  • ughhh! Basically EVERYONE is telling Lizzy that Wickham's story is false, but she just won't admit it!!!

  • Oh my I cant stop watching and it's so late :((((

  • @sulertia i know im like at 1:11 am and im going to watch it :P

  • @Ariella24 Caroline Bingley did have designs on Darcy, and was jealous of Lizzie. She also would have liked Georgiana to marry her brother Charles Bingley. Either way, had her wishes come to fruition, then Georgiana would have been her sister-in-law. Darcy was fully aware of Caroline Bingley's designs and plans on him and on his sister, and he slighted her whenever she spoke ill of Lizzie or tried to embarrass her in company.

  • @Ariella24 i was thinking the exact same thing!

  • hahaha im in the same situation too..its 3:37 am, and im soo watching this.....fuck sleep :)

  • jane knows that darcy and lizzie are a match....she has to!!

  • I always think of Mr. Wickham as being more a charmer than handsome. When I read the book, in my mind's eye, I didn't necessarily see him as more handsome, just more charming and easy going. We all have met that type of guy that is not the best looking one in the room but the women are all over him because he is so smoothe. That is how I see Wickham.

  • @debsplum

Iv married one, charmer and handsome! Too many women were after him, didnt last, sob!

  • @debsplum

I maried one, charmer andhandsom too. Women like moths on the flame! Didnt last, sob! We cant have everything, good looks + charm, and...faithful, not nowadays.....

  • @madalene2012 Yep, so did I...hence the comment. LOL I thought Adrian Lukis did a good job as Wickham. I never saw him as handsome but charming. The big screen Wickham (Rupert Friend0 was too handsome imho but not nearly as charming as Adrian's version. Weird huh?

  • @TheHollapaula that's what i thought too, at first. I thought they both looked too old and plain for the parts. I did watch the 2005 version first too, which probably affected my decision a great deal. However, I have come to realize that Jane and Eliza in this version have a "classical" beauty, if you've ever heard of the term. Eliza especially has the most beautiful eyes and facial expressions in this version, and I have come to love this version far more than the 2005 version, even though I

  • @lacrosseplayer49 --I totally understand your opinion.

  • @lacrosseplayer49 i totally agree. i like this version far more than the newer version!!! there's more character to it.

  • @lacrosseplayer49 Yeah, these actresses are more classically beautiful. Jane looks like someone from a Renaissance painting.

  • @TheHollapaula Lizzy is rather beautiful, I reckon.

  • Wow.... Mr Bennet is one of the funniest characters in any book i've read or film i've seen...

  • That letter from Caroline is just so mean... :( But Georgiana in this version...she looks pretty similar to the actress playing her in the 2005 film, doesn't she?

  • @Heowa She is absolutely prettier than 2005's Georgiana IMO

  • oh mary... SHUT UP! btw... SHE should have married Mr. collins. perfect match and the house stays in the family.

  • love this version

  • the movie version was short ... only reason it wasnt 'as good' although for the sake of Matthew as Mr Darcy I have to say that both versions are tied in my opinion :) ohh Matt-Darcy *-*

  • marriage...Mr Collins....**SHUDDER***

  • Elizabeth is a hypocrite.....why did she expect wickham to marry for money but don't want charlotte to marry for money...doesn't she realize the situation that charlotte is in.

Also....Jane is the smarter and better one of the two...she doesn't jump to conclusions like charlotte....I never wonder why everyone go on about charlotte being so open and honest when she could hold a grudge like the next person.

  • poor Bingley and jane....

  • hands down, darcy-firth

    ehle-lizzie

i srsly cnt even imagine anyone else in these roles......

  • her facial expressions are definitely more lizzie then kiera's... basically all the script for this version is better then teh 2005 movies. the movie was just too short to convey teh story properly.

  • i thought whickham was ment to be really handsom and a little more interesting but their portrale of him is not what i thought it would be but colin firth is doibng very well at being mr darcy but i do prefer the man that plays mr darcy in the 2005 film of the book. he just melts my heart at the end lol

  • I totally agree! But I prefere this version :P If only matthew macfadyen were the one playing mr. darcy, Simon woods were the one playing mr. Bingley and Rupert friend played Wickham :P I like Jennifer Ehle better than Keira Knightley as Lizzie :P

  • i know what you mean. jennifer ehle is way better than keria knightley. there is more dialog and there is something about the way she spoke something that fit with my idea of lizzy.

  • Yeah! :D

  • @ezzie4zac It's the twinkle in her eye and that clever smirk

  • @Sachie94 me to this is more detailed and stuff

  • pride and predj oh yey!!!!! pride and predj Yey!!! x

  • Ew! Charlotte is not at all attractive to me. Even Jane looks better than her. Elisabeth is beautiful.

  • I think Charlotte looks better than Lizzy.

  • Agreed, she is easier on the eye for sure and a much better option for a wife.

  • i see you have taken to using austenian language!

  • I dont know why they chose Mr. Collins to be short in both movies it clearly states that he was a tall man in the book??

  • For fear he might appear handsome... tall men have a certain charm no matter how tedious they are. This would defy the purpose of the character.

  • Well, I think Jane is beautiful.

  • Hmm, poor Mary. Now that Mr.Collins is taken I wonder what will happen to her.

  • I KNOW WHAT IT IS!!! Jane's head is too small for her body. And her head and neck seem to morph together into one mass. Thats it.

  • What do you mean?

  • I was trying to figure out why I thought Jane was such an eyesore, and I figured it out. Sorry if you like her. I just can't.

  • Eyesore? If Susannah Harker is an eyesore then im an Indonesian, i think shes a lovely looking girl, and thats a mans opinion on it.

However your entitled to your opinion, just thought eyesore was a bit much.

    Anyway never mind.

  • You reply very promptly. Anyway, sorry if I offended you. I just think that there's something about her that makes me not really want to look at her. I think that Elizabeth is much prettier, even if she's not as mature. But at least she has a sense of humor.

  • I don't think that it's Susannah Harker as much as it is that Jane is supposed to look like a radiant angel, and while Susannah Harker is lovely, I personally think Jane from the 2007 movie was a more accurate portrayal.

  • Mnn, yes you may be right with that.

  • Beg to differ: Knightley is too modern, forces/clenches jaw constantly, very aggressive, too irrascible. She was so not on comfortable in the historical period's requirements. She mis-represents Austen's premier woman.

  • Oh no, I meant Jane.

  • Well, did you know the actress was pregnant during the filming? I find she looks remarkably well, considering!

  • I COMPLETELY agree. Her head is too small for her body. Actually i think she looks like a bird. But you know I'm, pretty sure i know why they cast her; I kept thinking she looked familiar then i realised she looks like an old painting. You know the ones you see and wonder why they're so ugly? I think that was what was considered beautiful at the time. I'm trying really hard to find her beautiful, I mean she's supposed to be Jane Bennet, but seriously, she looks almost retarded in some way.

  • Exactly ! And her smile is so stupid I want to slap her. Seriously, it's not Jane Bennet...

  • what a coincidence, it's 2 am and i was pondering whether i should go to bed or not... It's a P&P thing i suppose.

  • haha i am exactly in the same position except it's four now haha.

  • In the beginning Mr.Whikham seems like SUCH a nice young man! I remember watching this the first time and I was so shocked to learn otherwise, its really rather sad isnt it?

  • I must admit I like the dresses of this era, but the white ones remind me too much of a night gown. I believe that once I get the money I will buy this whole series.

  • Mr Bennett sees right through Mr Wickam

  • I have to agree that Lydias actions are very forward and loose for the time period. Also I find myself not wanting to go to bed yet must keep watching it.

  • It is 2.07 AM. I have two choices: 1. Go to bed 2. Keep watching this. I will go with 2 i think :)

  • I've been doing the same, haha

  • @calamariattack

    SAME HERE

  • I'm in the same situation as you, and I say sleep quite overrated when you have the choice to keep watching this : )

  • 'tis a common choice of action :D

  • @calamariattack. lol. Its 3:30AM and I can't stop watching this either!

  • @calamariattack - that's exactly how it was for me, COL (chuckle-out-loud) Oh so good! LOVE this version mostest of all, absolutely!

  • @calamariattack LOL im in exactly the same position! im in cyprus, its 3 42 am .. sleep or this?

    THISSS :D

  • @SEXIHUNNI5

ahaha , we are in many, night people!! Its a pandemic movie stuff!!

  • @calamariattack I do exactly the same thing most nights! Its my "wind down time" and I must have watched these episodes at least twenty times each!

  • @calamariattack it's 4.20 am. I have two choices:1 Go to bed.2.Keep watching.....

Im in a waste position you were. I choose to go to bed, after all, and watch the rest tomorrow....

  • @calamariattack i read this comment exactly at 2:07 as well and i completely agree with option 2!

  • I like movies where female characters are not size zero or typical hollywood beauties - these are all natural beautiful women. I mean, how many people back in those days had hair extensions or super white teeth?

  • @HelenaJ00 I know, it makes me feel better that these heroines are plump too.

  • Mr Bennett is well smart, he's bitchin'

  • I can't believe how inappropriate Lydia is! Chasing after soldiers all the time and being raucous. She acts like she's 12, not 15. Why does her family let her run wild like that? It seems highly out of character for the time period. Wouldn't her father have put his foot down?

  • @Sarandib22

    with Mrs Bennet? hopeless...

  • @Sarandib22 - I'm not so familiar with the time period but I would think that the mother is responsible for the raising of the child and not the father. Mrs Bennet seems to be the cause of lydia and kitty. what a shame?

  • They are the result of Mrs. Bennet's loose rearing. She often promotes their flirtatious and riduclus actions. She brings it upon herself and is blind to their behavior. 'Tis a shame...

  • At 7:40, doesn't she say "Oh Mr Bennet!" even though she's talking to one of the soldiers?

  • she actually says, "Oh Mr. Denny"

  • I like Charlotte's response in every version you see. Lizzie is clearly put in her place. Though she is a heroine and you do adore her, she is very full of her own self-importance, probably because she holds the place of her father's favorite. She sits by and watches her sisters act ridiculous and then acts oh so hurt when they are corrected. Perhaps if she had opened her mouth, they wouldn't be publically embarassed. And her behavior towards Charlotte is deplorable.

  • I 100% agree with you there myhighlanddream, and the ease in which she cast aside their childhood friendship was disgusting, obviously the arrogance coming out.

Thumbs up on your opinion there.

  • One of the reasons I love this story, the heroine isn't perfect :)

  • @myhighlanddream i think Lizzie is upset and angry because she thinks that Charlotte deserves love! Lizzie feels that Charlotte settled for stupid and embarrassing man

  • Did you notice how Kitty and Lydia are predominately either running, laughing or dancing? Such a hyper duo!

  • won't Mr. Collins inherit Lucas lodge when Sir William Lucas dies because he also has no male heirs or will it go to another distant male cousin?

  • Estates didn't always have to go to a male heir. For example, Mr. Collins said that Lady Catherine's daughter was going to inherit Rosings Park, presumably whether she marries or not.

  • actually in the book it is said that Charlotte has brothers. It is not said how many but it is implied that are a few.when everyone finds out that Charlotte is marrying mr. Collins is pa paragraph in the book, can't remember how it sounds exactly but it is something like " her sisters were happy that they could make their entrance in the society, and her brothers were happy that they will not have a spinster in the family"

  • I think Charlotte might have brothers, though I can't be sure, could be wrong :)

  • In the book Sir Lucas has several younger male children, though I'm not sure if they're mentioned in the movie. I know they aren't mentioned in the 2005 version.

  • Is Crispin Bonham-Carter related to the woman who plays Bellatrix LeStrange and Mrs. Lovette? I forget her name, but I think it is Bonham Carter...

  • yes they are cousins and her name is Helena Bonham-Carter

  • @itachifan1243 He is the cousin of Helena Bonham-Carter, yes.^^

  • I really dont like Mrs Bennet. She is almost as bad as Lydia and Kitty.

I mean just because Lizzy refused to marry Mr Collins she gets all upset and threatens to never see her again. Thats a little extreme.

  • For Mrs.Bennet it isn''t :)

  • In that time Mr. Collins was a good catch. Not only would she be married a plus for women she would become mistress of the home she grew up in and saver her sisters when their father died.

  • it seems that way but at that time marriage was the only option for most women. She honestly is looking out for her daughter just not in the right way. she isn't a vicious person

  • very true. she wants the best for her daughters and wants them to be provided for, like every mother. but the silliness gets in the way of going about it with sense. (as a side note, perhaps silliness is hereditary? just look at Mrs. Bettet, Kitty, and Lydia lol.)

  • The interpretation of Mrs Bennett as being 'silly' can be attributed to her birth into a family of a lower class. She would not have known the mores, and ettiquete of the 'superior' social circles. She wants only to see her daughters rise to a higher rung of society as she did...it is only her lack on manners and knowledge of the ways of society that are seen as silly. It is the actress in this case who overplays the character.

  • oops, i meant Mrs. Bennet, sorry. can't spell. :)

  • Just flirtation I think- Lydia seems to like all the officers.

  • I really LOVE Lizzy. This actress portrays her well.

  • does anyone watching this think that Lydia

likes Denny and he likes her back...Or is it

    just a flirtation...

  • noing lydias charecter just flirtation

  • Lydia would be such a slut in this day and age. I am almost positive of it.

  • It wasn't back then, but I find that just like nowadays still, if you're related to someone even so far down the family tree, you're still referred to as cousin without the degree reference.

I like the actress who plays Jane in the 2005 version. she fits perfectly. But I LOVE this Lizzy, she's wonderful.

I've always hated Mrs. Bennett, no matter who plays her character. This version makes her even more terrible. So pretentious it's sickening!

  • and that's what makes her a good actress! ;)

  • thats the point

  • idiot.that shows how gd an actress she is 2 play such a role.

  • well lizzzy is the main character so you choice means alot

  • I guess I didn't differentiate the topics very well, I'm well educated enough to know that that's what makes the actors and actresses good at what they do, what was more implied on my statement was Mrs. Bennet the fictionalized character herself. She irks me in the worst way.

  • isnt that man there cousin or something thats nasty

  • Cousins marrying isn't really disgusting. There is enough genetic difference to make it so that there isn't really a problem. Until fairly recently (the last 75 or so years - maybe 100) marrying a cousin was acceptable for a lot of reasons: the family is known; wealth stayed in the family; sending a daughter off to marry a cousin was far more desirable than sending her off to strangers. Most cousins are extremely compatible (I don't mean sexually) for obvious reasons.
