I'm 14 and I saw your book at a McKays(used books&CD store).I saw your Documentary last year on here.I had begged my parents to by the book(it was somewhat expensive),I was and still am extremely interested in the book.I however, didn't get it. But I was amazed when I found out that it was YOU who wrote it, which makes me more eager to read it.I am extremely interested in studying the human brain and how it works.I can't wait to get your book and read it. I'm hoping for a future in neuroscience.
I agree, I have a very high IQ, and it used to be a boost to my self esteem... but now I see it as meaning I am just good at learning in a way deemed good for classical education.
Just found out who you were today, and that whole numbers as shapes/feelings concept is very interesting. I'm already reading over a dozen books this quarter... ...but I'll definitely look into your book, more out of curiosity of what you have to say than technique.
You are a charming and well spoken young man Daniel. When I've heard people describe or put you in a box of abilities or disabilities it makes me ponder that perhaps you are just the evolution of our species here to guide us to believing the potential of what is before us. Cheers!
Daniel your abilities are amazing. When i was younger i used to have mental pictures of shapes when ever i heard a number.. but as i got older that faded away.. the only one i can remember is the number 8.. what do you see when you imagine the number 8? please describe it to me.
I've read about You in a science magazine. I was really interested. 3 days later,on the radio, I heard someone reading the sentence about the day You were born. That's how I got knew about Your book, Born On A Blue Day. After that I heard the story about the school theatre and the ladybirds. I just felt like I understand You so well. It's like I heard a story of one of my old friends.
Now I'm going to buy the book (I hope I'll buy it tomorrow - I'm so bussy). I'm looking forward to it!
Puxa é quase inacreditável q vc aprender islandês em 1 semana. Conta pra nós o nomes dos livros que você usou! (eu até desconfio quais sejam). E se vc é um savant vai entender estas palavras.
Thank you for this video. I just have a few questions. Most things in our world run out, get finished and end. Can there be too much information in your head? Is there such a thing as information capacity?
@kaizerzydeco...hi Daniel, me too i luv ur voice!I think i could sleep with ur voice i luv u Daniel!I luv what u do, luv what u are!I'm a Big fan, i luv u!You are my GOD!!!GOD KEEP BLEESSIN U!^^ BE HAPPY........
Hey, Daniel you might be interested in a book/author,My Big Toe by Thomas Campbell, regarding the aspect of human potential and especially communicating in metaphors.
I thank You for the book "Born On a Blue Day", it is wonderful book and You are wonderful person, not only because the savant thing. I also believe, that You are right about the connection of the meaning and the sound of the words.
I am looking forward to read this new book, unfortunately this has not been translated in Estonian yet. I wish You all good and happy days!
I'm a math student, and I have to say in my opinion that savant ability in mathematics is worth very little. Probably the majority of great mathematicians were not savants. The capacity for abstract, conceptual thinking is essential for mathematicians and scientists.
Hi Daniel, finally got around to reading the book. By the way, some of us are wondering what your MBTI is. You know, personality type. If you could google INTJf 'the boy with the amazing brain', there's an entire thread about us normal folks being envious of your genius. I personally would like to take a stab that you are an INTJ/INTP - an Introvert, Intuitive, a Thinker. What do you think?
the reason people are not good at math is because they try to solve it all at once. the trick is to break it down. for example. (i'm going to make this easy so it is not too hard to understand.) 1019x1065. i know the answer is 1085235. the reason is. all you need to do is do 1x1. then add 6 zeroes. then add 65+19 which is 84. and add 3 zeroes behind the 84 since it is 1000's. then do 20 times 65 which is 1300 minus 65 and that is 1235. add that to 1084000 and you get 1085235.
I am a student studying engineering at the University of Iceland and icelandic being my first language I was truly mindblown by your ability to not only learn, but also to speak the icelandic in that short amount of time (1 week was it?), which is amongst the more complex languages to learn.
With my background in science I wasn't less impressed by your way of seeing and interpreting numbers, being able to do huge calculations along with remembering our beloved PI. Looking forward to the book.
Daniel, I read your book in two days. I couldn't put it down! Your own personal paradigm of colors, shapes, and textures. Its functional too! I think the combination of senses were transduced internally relative to your own imagination. A strong imagination can take any stimulas and blend together with any other, like color to music, to shape and textures, and back to texture to color. I hope your success continues to rage. Look forward to new books and videos.
I agree with @kaizerzydeco on your soothing voice Daniel. I just started watching clips of you on David Letterman and here. We're so lucky to have you, who (unlike Kim Peek, though so very special and gifted himself) can so thoughtfully (and patiently!) help us understand what goes on in your mind. David Letterman is handsome & looks like a 117 I think you said :) tall, lanky and wobbly. Wonderful. How you visualize Pi (as depicted in your art) is fascinating. Will subscribe to channel.
I have just got the book today. I ordered it in English version from Germany! And the book is so engrossing, I can say it is one of the best thing that could have happened to me. I am too excited each time I start to read it.. that I need to take a deep breath and continue. Every word.. every piece of it is a masterpiece.. stroking the very fabric of human thoughts.. with carefully lined arguments each leading to a precise idea. Wonderfully written! Could be the best book to read ever written.
Thank you Daniel for this video, and for both of your books. I've just started your second book and I think it will help me with some important concerns I've had concerning the mind, consciousness, and my own potential. I thank you for your efforts to communicate what a wonderful opportunity life is.
...A continuation of the previous comment. ... As an exercise, I suggest reading several mystery novels. Apply deductive reasoning and attempt to devise the solution to the mystery. If your are consistently correct, consider that you are predicting behavior in a way that is very not-autistic but in a manner consistent with some of your other capabilities. I have other ideas if you care to discuss them....
I am a neuroscientist and though in no way a psychologist (I am an empiricist in terms of scientific philosophy). I am skeptical regarding the diagnosis of autism. I think this diagnosis may be the result of a confusion between causality and correlation (a 'pro hoc ergo proctor hoc' error). Listening to you, leads me to believe that autism as a label, has in some ways worked itself into your definition of self. .
Have you been tempted to look at very old script languages like Sumerian language and try to decipher what those could mean? Only few people in the world can understand those.. I believe you need to use that talent you have to make at least a few breakthrough discoveries in your life time..that probably no one else can do in archeology, biology, physics or weather systems. Or probably life itself.. some mathematical things that could explain things others cant see yet.
Hi Daniel. I am impressed of Your abilities. You have told once that "PI is beautiful". I wonder how do You find the other sacred number called PHI = 1,618... ?
Hello daniel!! Much love from MEXICO. Hey, why dont you work in a new theory about everything. i mean, have you heard about the M thoery? The Humanity needs your brain for the new holy grail of the science. I don't want to sound like inappropriate but.... A brain like yours can be of great help for us. I'll read your book. You are an inspiration for me. I wish meet you someday.
He does it's almost hypnotic! i could listen to him all day and night. He's amazing, an absolute genius, I don't see him having a disability I see him having a gift, that some of us can only dream of .
Hey Daniel, I just watch the documentary about you and i've read some other things about you, i plan on reading your books too. I found on wiki, that you learned, amond other languages, romanian, is that right? Dacă da, este ceva extraordinar, pentru că limba noastră este destul de complicată! You are an inspiration for me.
I just read your book and found it a great read. All of your big theories in the world of science were well explained, but I didn't see that with the paragraphs on Intelligent Design. Given the detailed analysis of all your views, I was hoping for a little more on this subject, figuring that it's such a hot topic these days. Also, I thought I remembered you thanking God for something in a video I saw. I could be completely wrong on that, but as soon as I read your section on....
...intelligent design, a light-bulb went off. Please correct me if I'm wrong. And maybe a quick statement on whether you believe the initial substance that precluded the big bang could have created itself. I'm searching for truth and nothing else, so your views will be well thought upon. One more thing. You don't shy away from voicing your views, many of which span across all traditional political lines. That's called independent thinking; a human quality, near extinction. Thanks, Take care.
@FreeCapital "Professor Richard Dawkins is currently giving media interviews for his latest book 'The God Delusion'. In a recent one with the BBC's 'Newsnight' programme, Professor Dawkins made several erroneous comments. He spoke about a religious person's belief in a universe containing a god, whereas Christianity (the religion the professor singles out for criticism) explicitly argues for a God *outside* of the time and space He created.
@FreeCapital It is like asking where the poet is in his/her poem or to expect an artist to be in his/her own picture. All creation is an act of separation." - Daniel Tammet
Maybe you could learn speak also in Latvian language (just a another week) :)
p.s. how good are you on creativity/solving problems/music? is there any information or research? it would be great if you could answer that on youtube :)
I just finished your "Born on a Blue Day" book. Really enjoyed it. I must seek that one too, but i dont know is it allready translated into Estonian language :D
Yes he was probably one of the greatest child prodigy and geniuses the world have seen, but the statement of learning a hole new language in a mere day is nothing but a faboulation created out of A Story of Genius, an article that focused on the life of William Sidis predominately based upon hearsay and popular beliefs of the time. People please stop taking the facts coming out of wikipedia as the stone cold truths, and start thinking for yourself what is really plausible..
i must read your book sometime. i excell at math too (not to your extent but better than most of my peers). my dream is to create a small "pattern" or "equation" or "concept" enabling anybody to calculate and solve math problems better than any computer we could ever create. similar to the goals of einstein or michio kaku.
i must read your book sometime. ive always had a fascination with numbers and im very good at doing math problems in my head (not to your extent but better than most of my peers). my dream is to one day find a "pattern" or some sort of small "equation" that can be taught to people of any age, enabling them to calculate and solve math problems better than any computer we could possibly create. similar to the goals of albert einstein and michio kaku
I reluctantly filter information through preconceptions as a means of self defense against barrages of dishonesty. When I'm observing nature I tend to just observe and then choose perspectives or concepts to test against my observations. But when I'm reading I have to filter a lot because authors lie a lot. (I'm not directing this toward Mr. Temmet) And when watching TV I find I can't filter fast enough because there are so many layers of deceit in imagery, associations, sounds, etc.
ytcarol: I don't know who this question is addressed to, but I would like to comment that Tammet does mention information overload in his book. The advertisements we see from day to day all come at a pace where there is less time to think and more time to readily if not unwillingly "accept" this information as it comes flying at us.
I fully agree. I would say this world is designed to make your memory fail in a lot of ways.
1415 6535 8979 3238 4626 even 41971 seems to have a pattern. or the last 5 of the first 50 digits 37510 3+7 = 10 5 is 1/2 10 and 10 is well where things were ending up. I really enjoyed your video. You have a great gift and purpose.
I don't suppose I have anything special, but I have memorized some numbers in my day through practice. Pi up to 50 digits, my bank debit card numbers (16 digit one, expiration date, and 3 digit code on the back, video game numeric CD-key).
While it doesn't seem like it or may not be so, I think I do see patterns in pi that make certain parts cohesive. Maybe it's just my imagination :D
I am very attracted to number and especially angles and color changes. I feel very calm listening to Tammet. Like he is describing what goes on in my head, too. His thoughts are very grounding and helpful for me. Thank you.
estoy asombrado...por que la memoria vive tambien en nuestra sangre...los sueños me enseñan la lengua ancestral de mi gente...mapuche inche tati...soy mapuche y recupero memoria perdida a traves de el instinto...los sueños...
My mother saw an interview on French TV and recommended this book to me, "for the good of her grandchildren" :-) Well, I took it to Cuba with me, read all but the last chapter, lost the book, and bought it again for my birthday. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR *ANYONE*!!! Have just received Born on a Blue Day and will eat it all up.
I just Recieved mine i ordered 2 weeks ago Its a VERY Good Book. & I don't even read! much, i have about 7 books that i never finished reading, This one im Gonna Read all of it.
brilliant. i am 14 and have recently been diagnosed with asperger's, and a semi-savantoid capacity from memorization of numbers and dates. i have grapheme-color synaethesia, as well as the fact that sounds evoke colours. numbers do indeed have shapes and personalities, my favorites being 88( this rich, dark orange, reminiscent of a field in texas on memorial weekend, 576, 32,144, 28, ae synaesthetic environment you). you are an inspiration.
that's amazing. People like you experience such a unique field of consciousness. That the color 88 brings such vivid impressions to your mind, that's something quite amazing... I think I'm going to buy this book.
I can answer for this person, the answer is no. It is unique to him as your experience is to you or anyone else. It is not the same for all Aspergers or Autistic Servants which are even rarer. One person can see 88 blue and another Cyan and another orange and another pink.
Sunteţi fără tăgadă a opta minune a lumii stimate Daniel.
hi - this looks great. I saw you being interviewed on the morning BBC news programme the other week when I was off work sick (some benefit to being ill then!) so ordered "Born on Blue Day" which I've nearly finished + am loving. I'm sure you have been (and will continue to be) a great help to many many people through your writing - thankyou for the help you have been to me.
The value of pi was first calculated by Budhayana, and he explained the concept of what is now known as the Pythagorean Theorem. British scholars have last year (1999) officially published that Budhayan's works dates to the 6 th Century which is long before the European mathematicians.
Daniel-- you are the man. The book sounds amazing. Can't wait to read. Psyched about the film version of BORN ON A BLUE DAY too. Keep discovering and sharing please.
Savant explained from the Indian perspectives of Hinduism. I recently read about kundalini. Kundalini represented by a serpent is pure energy residing in the spinal cord. Kundalini is a ancient doctrine from India, which explains the paranormal, genius and insanity, origin of schizophrenia, savants, psychic energy and spontaneous human combustion. It also explains the role of celibacy in all the religions. Search Gopi Krishna and the Kundalini read his essay.
Just saw you on the hour, with George S., and really enjoyed watching your interview.
Savant syndrome seems very peculiar but also very interesting. Mostly how you associate colours with numbers, and people.
You also mentioned that you had to learn emotions, like jokes or love, when you were a kid... i suppose the same way I would try to learn a new concept in math? Sounds like it was really tough...
I found your interview on Radio 5 Live today absolutely fascinating and will be buying your books as a result. Am I allowed to ask what you make of the number 8, as it is my favorite number? Anyway good luck and hope to see more of these videos in the future :)
I heard your interview on BBC Five Live earlier today, was absolutely fascinating and I'd recommend others listening to the pod cast if it is available; Am I allowed to ask what the number 8 looks like, as it is my favorite number? Anyway I will definitely be buying your books. Hope to see more of these videos in the future :)
I can't wait to read your new book. I just finished "Born on a Blue Day". I am not autistic at all (that I know of), but your book really gave me a positive outlook. I am gay too and experienced being an outcast. Thank you so much for your writing!
I love his soothing voice. :)

Just found out who you were today, and that whole numbers as shapes/feelings concept is very interesting. I'm already reading over a dozen books this quarter... ...but I'll definitely look into your book, more out of curiosity of what you have to say than technique.

Hi,
I've read about You in a science magazine.
I'm looking forward to it!

the reason people are not good at math is because they try to solve it all at once. the trick is to break it down. for example.

I am too excited each time I start to read it.. that I need to take a deep breath and continue. Could be the best book to read ever written.

...A continuation of the previous comment.

Daniel,
I am a neuroscientist and though in no way a psychologist (I am an empiricist in terms of scientific philosophy). I am skeptical regarding the diagnosis of autism. I think this diagnosis may be the result of a confusion between causality and correlation (a 'pro hoc ergo proctor hoc' error). Listening to you, leads me to believe that autism as a label, has in some ways worked itself into your definition of self. .

Hello Daniel,
Have you been tempted to look at very old script languages like Sumerian language and try to decipher what those could mean? Only few people in the world can understand those.. I believe you need to use that talent you have to make at least a few breakthrough discoveries in your life time..that probably no one else can do in archeology, biology, physics or weather systems. Or probably life itself.. some mathematical things that could explain things others cant see yet.

Hi Daniel,
I just read your book and found it a great read.
FreeCapital 2 years ago 3
...intelligent design, a light-bulb went off.

He spoke about a religious person's belief in a universe containing a god, whereas Christianity (the religion the professor singles out for criticism) explicitly argues for a God *outside* of the time and space He created.

jimmirasknielsen 2 years ago
Yes he was probably one of the greatest child prodigy and geniuses the world have seen, but the statement of learning a hole new language in a mere day is nothing but a faboulation created out of A Story of Genius, an article that focused on the life of William Sidis predominately based upon hearsay and popular beliefs of the time. People please stop taking the facts coming out of wikipedia as the stone cold truths, and start thinking for yourself what is really plausible..

Temmet) And when watching TV I find I can't filter fast enough because there are so many layers of deceit in imagery, associations, sounds, etc.
momentinpassing 2 years ago
Very good points about needing to filter against deceptive input. Do you think Daniel Tammet addresses this in his book?
ytcarol 2 years ago
ytcarol: I don't know who this question is addressed to, but I would like to comment that Tammet does mention information overload in his book. The advertisements we see from day to day all come at a pace where there is less time to think and more time to readily if not unwillingly "accept" this information as it comes flying at us.
I fully agree. I would say this world is designed to make your memory fail in a lot of ways.

While it doesn't seem like it or may not be so, I think I do see patterns in pi that make certain parts cohesive. Maybe it's just my imagination :D

brilliant. i am 14 and have recently been diagnosed with asperger's, and a semi-savantoid capacity from memorization of numbers and dates. i have grapheme-color synaethesia, as well as the fact that sounds evoke colours. numbers do indeed have shapes and personalities, my favorites being 88( this rich, dark orange, reminiscent of a field in texas on memorial weekend, 576, 32,144, 28, ae synaesthetic environment you). you are an inspiration.

I can answer for this person, the answer is no. It is unique to him as your experience is to you or anyone else. It is not the same for all Aspergers or Autistic Servants which are even rarer. One person can see 88 blue and another Cyan and another orange and another pink.
