Hannity learned English quite well without a drop of sophistication, why is French, Spanish or German any different? The only reason I can think of is that it's difficult. People mock the idea of learning a second language because if they're honest, they know they couldn't do it. Obama was 100% right in what he said, I can't believe there's any doubt about it.
I think most people can learn a second language. Everyone here in Europe that do not speak English or German, or for that matter French, speak at a minimum one of those languages as a second language, regardless of education level. I know one Norwegian that does not understand English, my grandmother. And most of my friends speak all three Scandinavian languages, German and French. Not because they are smarter then Americans, but because of necessity and education reform.

I think he was talking down to Americans about speaking a foreign language without ever mentioning that he is not multilingual himself. I have many friends that have relocated in Europe and they learn the language; It's a necessity. However, when I visit Europe as a tourist (in some very remote places), I find that the locals are happy to speak english with me. That's capitalism.

The US does a lot of International trade. And a lot of people in the partner countries don't necessarily know English. In fact, it's arrogant to assume to expect people to know English. People learn other languages when it benefits them to do so. Fact is MOST Americans have no need at all to learn Freanch, German, Italian or Chinese. I live how many thousands of miles from any country that does not spreak English? Europeans actually contact multiple languages constantly.

You of course don't need to learn different languages to have knowledge of the "outside world." For most Americans it is simply unnecessary to learn a language they will never use, whereas in other parts of the world it is very necessary and practical to know several languages. It would in fact be "stupid" for Americans to spend years learning 3 languages they will never use as that time could be better spent on more productive endeavors.
That said, it IS becoming more and more practical every day for Americans to learn spanish. But each person can make up their own mind about that and there is no need for politicans to even discuss it. This goes for whining about immigrants needing to learn english as well. I live in a town that is now maybe 25% hispanic immigrants. The childern are bi-lingual and there are classes everywhere to learn english AND spanish. As to education policy -- foreign language requirements are actually quite common in public high schools and colleges in America. Many graduates, such as me, don't need it and simply choose not to keep up with it. It's just as simple as that.
When I say "ignorant, arrogant little fatties" I am referring to what the rest of the world refers to us as. We are moving towards a global economy and in 50 years it will be important that anyone having to deal with anything involved with the economy will need to know a second language. The rest of the world already thinks this of us and us complaining about being told to learn another language is why we are considered arrogant.
As a High School Student, I am completely aware of language requirements. In my school district, we used to have a language requirement but too many people complained about it and it got taken away. Meanwhile, kids in other countries are becoming fluent in languages by the time they reach middle school.
What's bad is that we complain so much about learning other languages, but when we go to other countries we don't have the politeness to learn their language and expect them to speak English to us while we expect Mexicans coming to America to know English.

As far as Education goes, I think McCain is going to severly underfund public schools as he plans on giving tax breaks to everyone, especially the rich (Obama will ower taxes more for middle and lower classes than McCain)--he has to cut spending somewhere

I agree that we should all aspire to learn another language, but its not a fair analogy to compare us to Europeans. The reason Brits speak french and german and vice-versa is because Paris is a train ride from London. Gemany can be a weekend trip.
I live in New York and if they spoke another language in Miami, the Hamptonsi or Vegas, we'd all grow up learning it.

Hannity learned English quite well without a drop of sophistication, why is French, Spanish or German any different? The only reason I can think of is that it's difficult. People mock the idea of learning a second language because if they're honest, they know they couldn't do it. Obama was 100% right in what he said, I can't believe there's any doubt about it.

I think most people can learn a second language. Everyone here in Europe that do not speak English or German, or for that matter French, speak at a minimum one of those languages as a second language, regardless of education level. I know one Norwegian that does not understand English, my grandmother. And most of my friends speak all three Scandinavian languages, German and French. Not because they are smarter then Americans, but because of necessity and education reform.

Most Millenials whom I come across say that whatever language they "learned" in High School, they've completely forgotten come Post-Language classes in college.. or no language classes at all in college.
The reality is that in Europe.. going a State's distance away means going to a place with a new dominant language.
In places where it is a necessity for Americans to know Spanish (Miami, Southern Cali) or French (Baton Rouge) people will learn it for their own betterment.

I think he was talking down to Americans about speaking a foreign language without ever mentioning that he is not multilingual himself. I have many friends that have relocated in Europe and they learn the language; It's a necessity. However, when I visit Europe as a tourist (in some very remote places), I find that the locals are happy to speak english with me. That's capitalism.

The US does a lot of International trade. And a lot of people in the partner countries don't necessarily know English. In fact, it's arrogant to assume to expect people to know English. It's very useful to know several languages in order to find your way around in foreign countries, it's also useful to know if people are speaking behind your back right in front of your face. Iran cannot be allowed to obtain the nuclear option; even Hillary signaled to Iran that a strike is on the table. Jesse would have a hard time cutting them off, since Obama doesn't have any. Hate or love Bush, but his 'surge' is a success and Iraq will be a successful mission in time.
Mccain adovocated for a surge in troops long before Bush did, he had the judgment to see that extra troops were needed to stop sectarian violence and terrorist activities.

Having our children become bilingual is a benefit to them further more I don't see ANY other country telling their people we shouldn't speak ANY other language but ours. It is beyond me how anyone can not see that this is how our officials wind everyone up to get those of us who are afraid of everything that is different or in their eye's UN-American. Wow... I think he wants to have Americans learning other languages so they can be more educated and opened to what's happening in other countries. I'm proud to be Canadian because we have govermental health care and i can speak both english and french. I am not anti-american but i believe everyone would be better of if the US would be less nationalistic.

People learn other languages when it benefits them to do so. Fact is MOST Americans have no need at all to learn Freanch, German, Italian or Chinese. I live how many thousands of miles from any country that does not spreak English? Europeans actually contact multiple languages constantly.
What Americans certianly don't need is politicians telling them to learn more languages. For most people it is a waste of time.

You of course don't need to learn different languages to have knowledge of the "outside world." For most Americans it is simply unnecessary to learn a language they will never use, whereas in other parts of the world it is very necessary and practical to know several languages. It would in fact be "stupid" for Americans to spend years learning 3 languages they will never use as that time could be better spent on more productive endeavors.

That said, it IS becoming more and more practical every day for Americans to learn spanish. But each person can make up their own mind about that and there is no need for politicans to even discuss it. This goes for whining about immigrants needing to learn english as well. I live in a town that is now maybe 25% hispanic immigrants. The childern are bi-lingual and there are classes everywhere to learn english AND spanish. Lots of broken english and spanish going on in dining establishments.

I've been to Europe 3 times, and what Obama said is completely accurate. I met a 14 year old girl who was fluent in 5 languages!! The most of a foreign language the average American learns is from high school Spanish I class, or from ordering food from their local Las Margaritas. It's pathetic.

As to education policy -- foreign language requirements are actually quite common in public high schools and colleges in America. Many graduates, such as me, don't need it and simply choose not to keep up with it. It's just as simple as that.

We are moving towards a global economy and in 50 years it will be important that anyone having to deal with anything involved with the economy will need to know a second language. As a High School Student, I am completely aware of language requirements. In my school district, we used to have a language requirement but too many people complained about it and it got taken away. Meanwhile, kids in other countries are becoming fluent in languages by the time they reach middle school.
