I believe General Washington was talking about the multiple other benefits of the Hemp plant, not necessarily smoking cannabis recreation ally although it's a distinct probability he may have done that as well. @OnePresidentOfPeace Yes he was, but the term "marijuana" wasn't adopted until much later when outlawing hemp was in favor by the leading fiber producers. Hemp was the superior fiber so the companies did not want the competition. Marijuana and hemp are essentially the same thing but hemp is cultivated for its fibers. There are many ways to grow hemp which will result in different grades of fiber. Hemp has thousands of uses some of which are paper, fuel, clothing, biodegradable plastic and more.

Most farmers planted hemp for rope-making and commercial use. BTW marijuana was made illegal int he 30s due to the cotton industry andd the fear of a large influx of latinos (which is a stupid reason). It wasn't made illegal just because it is a drug.
