  • "sometimes i wish i could have my whole heart in my hands" thats a really good lyric

  • Tuning the Guitar is overated

  • god?

  • This man is a legend..... He should have a temple built in his honor just like the ones in Greece...

  • damn he makes an out of tune guitar sound good.

  • Thank you mr. dsofrank for this great selection of great blues!!!

Many regards from Bosnia & Herzegovina

  • I'm going to say a prayer and put some flowers on his grave this weekend.

  • Tuning your guitar is overated!

  • the guitar is not out of tune it's just suffering with his master!

  • nothing but heart soul and pain

  • it's Mrs Son House I feel sorry for

  • Something that at first sounded out of tune never turned out tasting soo good. =]

  • The song sounds the way it is supposed to... i am a big fan of son house.. at first i tought the guitar is out of tune also....,and actually it is tuned down from open g i aint shure but i think on the 2nd or 3 th string the title is downharted blues...offf course this is the way ,downharted blues sounds...and you should play d...i always like open tunings and messing around with them,so i think i got it right on this one...

  • Hmmm, obv this is a great performance but there is an argument between the out of tuners vs the in-tuners. I much prefer playing things a bit sloppy. And the guitar

  • well he is playing with heart and soul not with notes this is blues not pop where you have to follow the pattern on blues you have to follow your feelings

  • If all you think about this music is that his guitar is out of tune, you need to learn some music theory. One of my favorite composers John Cage can explain it best. /watch?v=pcHnL7aS64Y

  • @Gooseguy6664 fuck you

  • @corzocl Are you slow?? I was agreeing with you. I don't see how you got voted up on that either.

  • Imagine the fret-wear on that beauty!... no wonder Jack White thinks guitars should be a battle to win by playing them.

  • i saw it questioned if Son's guitar was out of tune. Son played with an open G tuning and the chords simply have a different character when played compared to that of standard tuning. Son played fairly roughly and I'd have to think that he would go out of tune quite a bit. If in the middle of the song you'd just have to roll with it. In tune, out of tune, whatever, I'd put Son up against any other man with only a guitar and a voice. He was that good. He was in the ballpark of anyone.

  • i wish i could have a beer with son house.

  • @slashsrealson I thought that too once, then I saw some footage......having a beer with Son would end badly. I love this guy but even Robert Johnson wouldnt drink with him....LOL Peace

  • @slashsrealson awwwww man that would be great. but his grave is near by me so i can at the very least go to his plot and play his music while having a lil taste lol

  • The guitar might be out of tune, but the singing and performance penetrates right through your ears and hits your soul hard. Rarely will you ever hear such a passionate blues voice.

  • @FreeTheGhetto best response ever

  • Is it just me or does that guitar sound outa tune

  • @bazerdazer YES! That's the secret! watch "Louie Bluie" by Terry Zwigoff

  • What a badass!!

  • Probably my favourite ever recorded live performance of anything.

  • i can only dream of playing like that haha

    amazing

  • love this stuff

  • Its nice to hear a little soft blues music now and then.. calms the heart

  • "dickheaded" lol...

  • @kickalion are you fucking retarded? son house is one of the best blues musicians ever to play. michael angelo batio is a good guitarplayer but he has no soulor no emotion in what he plays, and if you dont have those then you might as well not even play. if you call son house a "chicken shit music singer" then you must be ignorant and enjoy listening to the sound of your own masturbation. this music is a certian style and is respected by almost every musician that is out there. go fuck yourself.

  • @metalistR1 say him to play mr.crowley

  • @kickalion dude you just dont get it. mr. randy or zakk wylde or even black sabbath would not be here without blues music. blues was the start up of rock and roll then that transformed into hard rock and metal of the 70's. if you are going on a basis of skill then son house is a good guitar player. he was not the best (robert johnson or maby some other guys were) but he was one of the most influential. without son house white stripes would not be. you think hand pickin' is easy?

  • @metalistR1 u r dickheaded

  • @kickalion nice grammer retard and mabye if you had some more info you could actually come back with a valid argument.

  • @kickalion....I hope God has mercy on your poor soul when you die, you Hipster. You must not have any idea about the roots of music or where music comes from. Stop buying everything that MTV and your washed-up guitar buddies tell you about. Mr.Crowley doesn't have a fraction of a percent of the feeling or soul that was put into this song. Just the fact Son House doesn't care about his tuning or the style of his guitar or the sound of his voice shows that he has more of a passion for music.

  • @kickalion

Yes, he was out of tune. His health was not the best by this time, and he may have been drunk, as he struggled with alchoholism.

However, his classic sides reveal him to be an excellent guitar player. And he is one of the greatest Blues singers who ever lived. I would say 'Top Five'. Everyone has their weak moments, and this was his. Still, you can hear his greatness in his singing.

Believe me, he was the real deal.

  • @NorthTulsaBoy bullshit, u must be a moron

  • @kickalion Haha, so you're going on various son house videos leaving inane comments about how he's rubbish and insulting people who call you a cunt talker... noone's forcing you to like the blues fuck off go listen to men in spandex

  • @kickalion just shut the fuck up you piece of shit. you know nothing about music. repeatedly hit your head with a hammer so you have an excuse for being a retard.

  • @kickalion i feel sorry for you

  • @kickalion {Please don't spread your moronic gene pool brother, please do the world this small favor)...

  • @NorthTulsaBoy Nice reply. You defended him without denying reality. Some people don`t care if it`s good or not, they think anything from someone they like is gold.

  • @PedroTightShorts

    Thanks.

  • @kickalion <--- Is obviously a troll because even shredders know Michael Angelo Batio is a clown.

  • This is one of the purest forms music will ever reach

  • son house is epic

  • The soul comes through every single time, just imagine the emotion behind it...

  • the guitar out of tone, passing a tension and troubled sound, just shows what was in the soul of this man.

  • it's in open G. obviously

  • Outstanding, outstanding!

  • This is a raw, honest, powerful musician.

  • Action is so high, strings are so old...Sounds like my first guitar when I was a kid.

  • Tuning is for Squares! The "imperfections" are what makes this music perfect.

  • People need to tune up there narrow mind.

  • Beautiful playing! This is a real legend of the blues!

  • i wish i could play with half as much emotion as him

  • its so raw. i love it

  • beautiful!

  • See my chanel and my favorites you will like my tastes of music

  • davey thanks for putting that straight hahaha. couldnt have said it better myself

  • I love his wig and his untamed guitar!

  • Hell , THIS is Blues!

  • This recording is after he was rediscovered, he had not played guitar in some twenty years but sat right down and started playing and recording. One of the best Country Blues Slide players, his caustic approach to the guitar coupled with his booming ministers voice...powerful beautiful my man, powerful beautiful...

  • @Ganjamancer i actually read somewhere that Dick Waterman maybe it was, after he found Son he actually had to reteach him to play some of his own songs

  • @SpaceBarbarian you red that on wikipedia.

  • @pretor92 actually i read it in a book. Not on wiki

  • What an incredible voice........................

  • crappy singer

    crap guitarist

crappy guitar (probably worth a lot though)

    shitty strings

    BEAUTIFUL MUSIC

    WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE

  • @TheJacquesHappy It's increadible, isn't it? :P If any other guy would sing with that kinda voice or with that playing on such a guitar he'd be laughed at in the smallest of clubs, but the emotion this guy can put into, man, it practically makes me weep

  • colour film!!!!!!!!!! yay!!!!!!! shame so little film footage actually is available

  • robert johnson was is Son houses band .Roberts first break into music

  • This is the man in his day! Show respect.....

  • speaking of tunning, what did he tune to?

  • @zombieman12345678999 to open G dissonant DGDgbd ( flattened B)

  • @tinpanalley67 i heard somewhere he used to flatten the 6th string down to a g as well. could be rubbish but it makes sense with the way he just bashes the strings

  • Transcendant. Unparalleled. Otherworldly.

  • To those who complain about his guitar being out of tune:

Who cares? Blues is about imperfection. It has a power that cannot exist otherwise. The need for everything to be perfectly arranged leads to blandness, like today's manufactured pop music.

Enjoy the raw, powerful emotion that rumbles through the cracks.

  • what kind of guitar is that??

  • @jacksontrot most likely a Dobro resonator guitar

  • @jacksontrot its a resonator guitar

  • It's part of what this genre represents and he was one of the few with such clear recordings and roots to this music, it's hard to say that the guitar is out of tune. It has it's flavor on it's own. If you down like the taste of this flavor, then leave and don't listen to it.

  • Amazing , for me everytime i hear this its like the 1st time i heard it all over again.

    timeless masterpiece.

  • Honestly my very first blues song I listened to at length. An epiphany! I feel like life punched me in the brain then wrapped me in a comfy blanket and gave me a bottle.

PS, jrg45721- I loved your response. Allow me to interject, not only are you ears out of tune, it's your soul that needs tuning.

  • @vegasgary702 best reply in all of you tube

  • Makes you realise that not everyone is an empty piece of crap out to screw everyone and everything. I`m not a major blues fan but Son House is just something else, makes me feel real in a Manchester, Salford way...give them the blues up there SH, god bless you

  • Captivating.

  • OMG, this is like an exorcism! Son House is not playing the Blues .... The Blues are playing *HIM*! Incredible.

  • can someone please tell me where i can get some tabs for this?

  • I dont know where anyone can get a tab for life experience...

  • wow, nice quality

  • quanto cazzo è sofferto sto pezzo....?!

  • Oh yeah!

  • Superb Vid

  • Wonderful. Great quality video. Is he out of tune/ or is that how it's supposed to be?

  • He's in tune with himself!!

  • He's not out of tune - it's (y)our ears!

  • @scout005 You guys are ridiculous!!! He isn't out of tune! Tunings are more than EADGBD. He's tuned to Open G dissonant (flattened B) for special, hauntingg effec!t

  • @tinpanalley67 I mean EADGbe

  • Where is this from? I have some video of Son House, but its bad quality compared to this. I love this clip and how it shows him keepin' time with his feet. Whenever you get fed up with all the useless dreck on the radio, put Son House on the hi-fi and if it doesn't inspire you - you just ain't right. Great post!

  • This is from the Old Grey Whistle Test, on BBC Television in the UK. He did a radio session for John Peel round about the same time. Apparently, when John Peel was showing him the sights of London, all he kept repeating was "the Blues ain't none of this foolishness!"!!?

  • If it is the same thing I am thinking about, the radio session has been torrented. It is from an FM broadcast in 1970.

  • I think I did hear that at one time- I believe there were two 'spoken' pieces, where he gives his description of 'the blues', but they've been edited from the longer versions on the original broadcast!?? Thanx!

  • Open tuning blues, Ya gotta love it!

The feeling in this music is so evident you can feel it in your bones..

    Son House was a master...

    Thanks for sharing this!

  • Son House's voice shakes your soul from the inside

  • I think Bukka White's a much better guitarplayer. Son's playing on its's own is not really special imho, his singing is though.

  • The simplicity of it is part of the charm. He's one of the few delta blues guys who had live recordings of himself.

  • No, his guitar is not out of tune, dsofrank, it sounds perfect!

Thanks for posting, nice color footage!!

  • pure emotion, god damn son.. how the fuck do you play with this much energy and soul... we need more music played with heart and soul these days...

  • i like how he snorts

  • Son House is the great Delta guy who has actual recordings.

  • I know many believe that wc handy was the father of reocorded blues. Fuck those who think so. WC was great. but was Jazz. bring it. all you handy fans. Handy WAS JAZZ NOT BLUES

  • damn thats vintage

  • God Bless you Son House!!

  • I first heard Son House via Rock legend Eric Clapton. I'm glad I did. Awesome. Dare I say it...Better then Robert Johnson for sure. Some style, but better!!

  • ive never seen a man with so much blues, he is the blues, this is blues, and this is good ol music

  • Master

  • this video brought tears to my eyes

  • Great Voice!

  • Hahaha everyone's talking about it being "out of tune." I don't know, maybe they forgot that this is the blues... If your guitar isn't at least slightly out of tune you're doing something wrong. Son House beat the shit out of his strings and still made it sound damn good. Then you have that hauntingly beautiful voice over the top.

Tuning... You kids are hilarious haha

  • This man speaks teh truth

  • A bluesman's guitar might be out of tune because he has been busking for 7 hours or his guitar is a hand me down, but take it from a blues musician, no professional musician will purposely untune his guitar for a gig.

  • Glenn Branca?

  • @DaveyD327 WELL SAID! I had my hands burnt in a fire, and now I play a lot of open tunning slide. Son House was a gifted man. He was the MASTER OF THE SLIDE BLUES.

  • @DaveyD327: amen. Some people just don't get "the blues". Look in his eyes, listen to his voice...this man LIVED the blues.

  • @DaveyD327 True, brother.

  • @DaveyD327 Anyone who is distracted by the tuning of this man's guitar, surely lacks an ear for true soul. Y'all wish you had 1/4 of the soul of son house.

  • @DaveyD327 If you've ever played one of those kind of guitars, they sound like shit anyway because the strings are about an inch off the fretboard. It's amazing you can play one at all. Son House rules!

  • まさかサン・ハウスがカラーでみられるとは。いつごろなんだ?

  • are you kidding me this is one of the great blues players and nobody sold anything its the blues if you cant appretiate these old blues then you got no right to listen to any of them

  • Son House was a true pioneer. The saddest thing about his life was as he became older he started drinking heavily and was shunned by other musicians and had to start working as a porter for a railroad.

  • Wow, thanks for the history on Son House. I just discovered him last night after seeing "It might get loud". Jack White said he is his favorite artist. There's one song that's his all time favorite w/o guitar, only hand clapping and I forgot the name of the song.

  • Comment removed

  • the tune is called grinnin in your face.

its just son house singing & clapping, i read about jack white's love of that tune in a book all about the white stripes. personally i think son house's tune called Pearline is his best music ever, but thats personal taste but Pearline is an amazing tune, check it out on here & you will hear what i mean!

  • John the revelator

  • He actually was a railroad worker and truck driver by profession. He never picked up a guitar until he was 26 and played with the likes of Charley Patton and Willie Brown by the age of 29. He never chose to make it as a professional musician because he had spiritual issues with the blues and church. He felt that the blues were a sin and never could bring himself to stick to it. He quit music for 15 years or so. Alcoholic, sure but 99% of musicians are/were. Still, not shunned by most!

  • I remember seeing the Scorcese blues dvds with Taj Mahal (i think) talking about the battle Son House fought between playing the blues and being a good Godly man. Given the fact the guy never totally devoted himself to his music, he was literally a genius, just imagine if he was 1000% committed. RIP Son House, one of the blues greats.

  • ok your a bunch of idiots. This is Son House and this is blues from the heart and all points south of there.

  • Yes your right, this is some deep shit! This is what comes out of a man when he's been beaten & broken but he's still standing.

  • robert johnson couldnt play the guitar with crap...that is until one of 2 things happened:1.he sold his soul to the devil according to southern mythology 2. he went down south and played everyday at different bars and got alot better until eventually he had an affair with a bar tenders wife leading to the bartender poisoning rodney, ending his life....because he sold his sold to the devil maybe? :P

  • if you think that then you are a idiot he is one of the most famous people around and player there are not any one like him today its song no devil .

  • Son House, one of the very best. That's all.

  • Indeed...this is raw, down and dirty and yet....pure delta blues!. Poweful interpretation of the lyrics...the guiter just slightly out of tune only adds to the emotion coming from Mr. House acting out the song done originally in 1922 by Alberta Hunter and covered one year later by the great Bessie Smith.

Rest in Peace Brother Son House (1902-1988)

  • I like the heavy breathing in between lines. This is probably one of the heaviest live performances of the blues. It's not about show boating on the guitar. This guy came from a different era. He came from the age of steam! This man is on his last legs. This is the blues at its best...We are lucky to be able to experience this man, if only there were some footage of Robert Johnson. Amen.

  • hallejah brother

  • who cares about the guitar...that's a really powerful voice.

  • i no what your talkin about true raw blues nothing better

  • Well played, old man.

  • Recorded at the BBC [i think]

  • Looks like the Whistle Test studio

  • It is. This was on the other night, 'Blues at the BBC' on BBC 4

  • listen to death letter

    THATS A GOOD EXAMPLE

  • i dont belive it's because he's drunk it coudl be his guitar too.. but this guy is very talented or its outa tune and he is and drunk and he don't care just picked it up and started to play

  • its the blues dude, who gives a fuck about being 'in tune'

  • @TheBrowndawg - Yeah I believe Alvin Lee once said something like - "good enough for jazz" - when it was about tuning...haha!

  • @TheBrowndawg YOU get it.
