  • great video...love Linux....r0x

  • OMG so many retarded comments. Look it the up and get a clue.

  • No, companies _can_ legally charge for GNU/Linux. Many do. "Free as in free speech, not charge".

  • The is more than three there is Windows, Mac , Linux distributions , BSD distributions , Solaris, and Plan9... and there are more I can't think of ... Linux Mint is more user friendly than Ubuntu ...

  • Is this CANADIAN?

  • i made an iso in 10 sec

  • GNU/Linux

  • this guys a smacktard

  • You CAN sell linux. If you have made a Linux distro you CAN charge for it!

Also Linux is not an operating system itself it's a KERNEL!

  • im going to listen to this guy, about girls, i need to learn to be a better boyfriend i have no problem getting them lol

  • @MrAwesomesauce101

OH, that's why governments and companies run linux?

  • @roB3rnd Or why alot of American defense technologies run real-time linux based operating systems

  • I use Puppy Linux, Ubuntu, and Xubuntu.

I dumped Windows and am never going back.

I can even run Photoshop 7 in Linux using WINE.

  • Steve has very interesting eyebrows o_O

  • audio is off sync

  • Does anyone have any idea if you can use Daemon tools instead of the freeware provided by ubuntu to boot linux?

  • @sarcasminacan i think u wnt virtual machine

  • Thia guy is such a joke. He's such a pseudo tech this guy has been on the air forever. He decides to put it on the air in 2007 which is a joke

  • Linux is the Core OS.. GNU rides on this OS Core.. Therefore we call it GNU/Linux..

  • I use Ubuntu 10.04 yeah sorry dotto you are wrong about the Linux being the OS it is the kernel. You might want to get your information right.

  • He forgot BSD.

  • something erks me about this dude.. dont know what it is

  • I use Arch, kde4. If you can google, you can use linux.

  • windows sucks BIG TIME! i use a mac and it is better then any windows pc i had hardly a error

  • You must have only ever used Windows ME...

  • @outwithlunch

Now, why did you say that on a video about linux

  • MS-Windows did nothing for the computer industry, it didn;t make people more computer savvy, it made people more computer illiterate. What I mean by this is it's "easy" setup of hardware etc made people unknowledgable about how the hardware actually works. Ubuntu is a great "beginners" distro of Linux, because it's super easy to install, and maintain. Real GNU/Linux distros force the user to dig in and understand the hardware, which is what I prefer. :)

  • @Chaniyth liux is slow you should get viswta its the best copy of mac ever

  • as soon as i heard ubuntu i left, i detest that distro.

    its purdy, but lame.

Red hat since 1999 and really, e16, eterm, vi and all the old stuff that still blows away other os's

    ...

not to hate on this vid, but the hatred for ubu is strong

  • Linux is a kernel not an Operaterating System itself.

  • You are correct, but if he said GNU/Linux, he would scare away any Windows users.

  • @Grifulkin You must be talking about the GNU/Linux...Best system ever!

  • @Grifulkin But GNU is a shitty name for an OS so it will never catch on no matter how much Stallman rants and raves :D

  • @Grifulkin its way easier than saying all (currently listed) 280 distros made off of the Linux kernel :P

  • @Grifulkin "Linux" and "Linux kernel" are not the same things. Linux is an operating system (OS), which contains Linux kernel, package management system, file system and desktop environment. Linux kernel is a base or kernel for Linux OS, like Windows is based on a Windows kernel, Linux is based on a Linux kernel - it's just a word play, Linux is a full operating system not just the kernel. Yes, there are many DEs and pckgmgrs but they are Linux.

  • I used to be a mint user after watching this. I am anti-microsoft so i would swich to anything. I just swiched to mepis 8 and have never been happier. Mint may be more multimedia ready but Mepis is faster slower and requires lower system requirements

  • I used Ubuntu before and some things weren't working right, so i came across Linux Mint and have had it on another machine since 7. It's excellent and dead easy to use. It's Ubuntu perfected :D

  • without WINE....

  • then tweak your dock

    use gnome

linux = pro choice, open source

    linux win

  • you're a moron, you've spammed this same message on over 5 linux related videos. Troll fails.

  • Im using Ubuntu and all the reactions I get are something like

"Wow, what are you using? It looks awsome" or "Why does your Windows 7 look so much better than mine?"

Im not even using the cube or any of the fancy 3d effects.

Linux doesnt fail you; you fail linux.

  • CrewRite, I would like to remember that Linux recognizes more Peripherals than Windows Does. Of course, that are still Brands that do not support Linux by realizing driver, but this is not a Linux problem. Moreover, many of these brands, are supported financially by Microsoft. So, the next time you want to buy some new hardware, just Google it to check out if is compatible with Linux and you will solve all your problems.

Just give a Linux a try as you do every with Windows XP/Vista etc.

    Bye :)

  • He forgot hardware driver issues.

  • Keep it simple, download the ISO file, double click and burn..

Even works on Linux Systems.. DUH !!!!

  • i like openbox its nice and lightweight (which is the reason i originally started running linux back in the day)

  • Linux is not Windows, keep repeating that to yourself, it's not a put down it's just reality, this comes from a long-time Linux user. Don't expect Linux, an OS with a different design than Windows, to act exactly the same as Windows.

  • when i inserted my red hat linux,i couldn't find setup.exe or install.exe,any help?

  • you'll never find any exe installing any Gnu/linux distro. if you wanna install the OS you must boot from the DVD or cd. is really easy install that distribution in fact! is you're a new linux user you should test a ived distro in order to know what is like!! red hats' programs end on rpm nor on exe....

  • ...no comment.

  • i like the minimalism of fluxbox, and tiled window managers make sense on a laptop.. its good having the choice

  • fluxbox has so little eye candy.

  • i have an ei-system notebook there aren't enough drivers for my notebook so i can't use linux, it has vista at the momment

  • Welcome to becoming a geek!!

  • Can sombody help me?

How can i connect linux to internett?

  • I had first heard of Linux when I watched this very episode back in 2006. Then in 2007, I tried my very first Linux distro - Mepis 3.4. I was astounded!

Since then I have tried Ubuntu, Mepis, Debian, DSL, Fedora, Red Hat, and Kubuntu, and Mepis is my favorite because it's the easiest to install and use out of those distros, it's very nice looking, and the KDE desktop is my favorite.

I am currently running Mepis 6 on my 1999 Compaq. It's not speedy, but it's faster than XP was on it!

  • true linux is a good open source os. right now im trying to make my own distro from the ubuntu 9.4 . and linux saved my ass when my xp crashed 3 months ago and now since i have xp back i MUST HAVE a linux distro installed in order for me to be entertained when im bored of gaming and etc.

  • Sweet, good luck to ya!

  • Install Openbox on it. It'll take a while to setup, but there are tutorials around. Just google tutorials. You can get gnome, or any other DE daemons running inside openbox which essentially will have less of an impact running a full desktop environment. The speed, and usability of a DE in a WM.

With just a window manager, you will not have the same experience if you have gnome installed since gnome is a Desktop Environment, and Metacity is Gnome's WM.

Try it out, it's worth it! :)

  • Uboooontu Uboooontu hhaaaa

  • Place Linux on a VM and run windows at the same time...for the WIN

  • other way around if you want to take advantage of linux's security

  • lol Linux can be used by most people. It just if you want to understand you got to be a geek.

For example when using the ubuntu terminal...you actually need to know something, however overall it's useful and easy to use even if you aren't bashing out the

ls..cat ect commands in the terminal

  • LOL...Wrong, Linux can be ALL people and to understand you DON:T have to be a geek!

Example: If and only if! you need to use the terminal we have the code so you only need to copy and past then hit enter you don't need to no anything more that that.

The power of linux is far more powerful than your average windows user will ever understand and if they did Microsoft would be out of business in a day.

Our distro of Ubuntu is directed towards new users (point and click) and desktop effects!!!

  • Desktop effects are bar none! This is something Microsoft can never come close to...... Oh, did i mention no blue screens of death, no viruses and no restarting your computer after updates? Yes we give you updates........

  • True, except for the whole restarting thing. Ubuntu's prompted me to restart after updates more than once. It just doesn't bug you until you do.

  • You were prompted because a kernel update. Thats the only time you will be prompted to restart at least with Ubuntu, i prefer the gnome desktop rather than KDE. KDE is to cluttered. These are few and far between. Hope you continue to use and grow in Linux!

  • It prompts you because Ubuntu is noob Linux. Init 1 and then init 5 and you'll be fine. The only time you need to restart is for kernel updates. Or in ubuntus case for the noobs of linux.

  • You also need to reboot with proprietary drivers like nvidia.

  • Not even that. Just restart X

  • Not true; malfunctions (often times).

  • Ubuntu uses DKMS to build the modules so you need to trigger dkms to rebuild modules. You may also have to unload the nvidia Module and load the new one.

Although restarting is often the most convenient thing you don't have to.

  • Stop apologizing for nvidia and calling me a liar. It serves no purpose. I've seen it myself. It doesn't matter any loading, unloading, transloading or magic key presses. Bugs in the nvidia driver can and do mess up the kernel core, sometimes irreversibly and a reboot is needed. These bugs aren't documented by the kernel and are up to nvidia to fix behind closed doors.

  • Thanks for the -1.

I have been using a Geforce 6600 for years now with Ubuntu and Archlinux and I don't know what you're talking about.

    Examples please!

  • I don't understand all the Ubuntu-hate out there.

Everyone starts off as a noob and Ubuntu is a friendly easy-to-use introduction to Linux with lots of documentation and a big helpful community. I mean shouldn't the hardcore Linux partisans LIKE that people want to switch to Linux and that there is a tool to help them do that?

  • I agree, and you need a good gateway drug to get people interested in Linux. Ubuntu is perfect to get people started.

  • Agreed!

  • Hi netsoj,

I know that there is a way to upgrade your kernel and use it immediately without any reboots. :)

    Mamma mia!

We can do anything with Linux! :D

  • What benefit will Dotto gain by putting Linux on his old computer? Even if Linux used 0mb ram, the computer Dotto is using would still be dog slow because his 2007 programs still need memory his computer doesn't have.

  • swap

  • swap is OS agnostic. It doesn't matter if you're using Windows or Linux, an ATA 100 hard drive is still thousands of times slower than RAM.

  • Linux FTW

  • This is sorta old. A Pentium 3 might be a tad slow these days.

  • lol ik rite, i gotta Compaq n600c and its iight on ubuntu but i like BSD bettr lol

  • Linux - Electron

    Windows - Neutron

    Mac OS X - Proton

  • lollzz

  • Do not use MEPIS as the video says. It's terrible, MEPIS being simple is a myth, I tried it a couple of weeks ago, it's just garbage.

Use Ubuntu or Linux Mint (What I use now) instead.

  • lol before i use ubuntu i was using mepis and it was very easy so its not a myth is very easy

  • You're using a computer. You ARE a geek. Get over it. Move on. Conan and his sword well. Just got digitized! It's called T E C H N O L O G Y. The future happens. OS doesn't matter. There is a difference though. Linux provides a choice. The others do not. 99% of what 99% of what people do can be done in Linux. I wont say for free because even if not monetary it still takes effort. Regardless, you have choice. A high priced commodity in today's society. PS. My mom of 68 uses Linux for WEMVP.

  • cant run games

  • you can run gmod. all source games and steam.

theres tons of tutorials. its easy to do... just copy + paste the codes xD

  • Can't run games?

    Absolutely false!

I have Myst, Sim City 4, HL2 and UT2k5 installed. They run perfect. UT runs on linux out of the box. More games do now than they used to. Every other game probably runs with Wine.

  • umm... comeing from a KID here, will it play my games? what about games like World Of Warcraft (no i dont play but i do play a games like it), sims 2, rpg games on the net? will it make music/play music. dose it make vidios ok? what do i have to download to do all this??

  • i don't care what you say ubuntu doesn't seem any faster than xp

  • PROcess! LOL

  • why the fuck he took so long to get to the point

  • Funny how we can't see you. I bet you are fatter.

  • haha you you don't know what the fuck your talking about so stfu

  • linux is what you make it n00b

  • WHO HAS TIME TO MESS WITH LINUX?

  • Who has time to watch videos on youtube, post comments, etc...?

  • apparently millions of people. you and i included.

  • your rigth

  • what is this?

  • Absolutely it is legal to charge for linux. The GPL does not forbid this. You simply must supply source code. Any changes made to GPL code must also be made freely available.

  • The chicks dig it. Go all out and use gentoo like me. You won't be able to keep em away.

  • you can charge for linux...you just have to provide the code and most people who'd want it know how to find it for free.

  • Holy Moly, a geek waffling and shouting nothing but jibberish, and I still have no idea what linux is all about.

Someone sit dottogeek down and make him watch this nonsense. What is obvious is he has no idea what he is talking about.

  • dude i aint no geek but this dudes helpin me out right now bring my old ass laptop back to health so if ur not a tard and have knowledge about wat hes talkin about and WATCH THE OTHER VIDS. u mite not look like an ass.

  • Why are people so rude? Can't people comment without swearing? Thanks Dotto! U were very helpful!

  • "Companies can't legally charge you for Linux itself, because it has to be free".

This complete nonsense! Of course, you can legally be charged for Linux! Linux is "Free Software", but "free" doesn't mean "free" as in "free beer" but "free" as in "freedom"! You can do with Linux whatever you want as long as you respect the license behind it, the GPL! And that means: You can also sell it!

dottotech, please, learn something about the GPL before telling people such nonsense!

  • Not true. There are enterprise editions that are charged, but the open source version are FREE ONLY versions. If you start charging people for it, you are breaking the law.

  • 1. The packages in the enterprise editions are ALL open source (or more correctly spoken: free software) as well! The enterprise editions are composed of the SAME packages as the non-enterprise editions, just complemented by some more packages! Linux itself is free software licensed under GPLv2.

    2. You normally don't pay for the software but for the extended support for the enterprise editions.

    2. But you are NOT breaking the law if you charge for a non-enterprise edition!

  • You are allowed to do with free software whatever you want, as long as you do not break the rules of the license. There are a lot of free software licenses, but there is no free software license which forbids to sell free software, because a software licensed under such a license wouldn't be FREE software anymore! So, there simply can't be any law which you could break by selling free software! If you still have a different oppinion, please name the EXACT law one breaks by selling free software.

  • I reread the GPL licenses and, you're right. You can charge for your software if you want.

Thanks for clearing that up with me.

    Purkinje

  • this fucking guy is good for nothing his shows useless watch his show and lose 30 mins of ur life

  • It took you thirty minutes to realise you don't like these vids? LOL XD

  • hahaha dotto u the man but ur outa sinc...

  • This is a 2006 video added in 2007. He's showing Ubuntu 6.06. In October 2007 Ubuntu 7.10 had already been released.
