can someone please answer this, allot of old PC games don't bother me with outdated graphics ect, in some cases I actually enjoy the DOOM look and all the old classics. My problem is older games used to be allot less "Hold your hand" and I am just worried if this game will indicate objectives and locations and destinations easily ? does it help at all and I only have a laptop so what would be best to buy as a controller to play it rather than use a keyboard which I HATE. also is SAVING easy ?
@TimeSplitterChimp When you begin, you still don't have any clear objectives, but doors that will need key-cards will stop you. The game does help you out in telling you where to go. It tells you what room you have to go, and what to do there. You just have to figure out how exactly to get there. I don't think it matters if you're playing on a laptop or not. I'm using one, and am doing fine. And there's a quick-save, if you're wondering. And saving is easy...you can do it anywhere.
It's sad that the age of a game - like the age of music - is somehow putting people off trying it. So what if it looks old, there are not only mods that fix this, but the visuals are a huge part of what makes SS2 such an immersive, atmospheric feeling. It is possibly the best game on PC, and certainly the best immersive sim, maybe even the best first person game ever. And there will probably never be another sequel, which is SAD.
Someone answer this honestly. Is this game outdated now? Bioshock is one of my favorite games of all time and I'm looking into getting this but I don't want to id its outdated.
@kickodude Try playing the first Deus Ex first. If you think that one is outdated, then chance is you will find SS2 more outdated. SS2 is slightly better than Half-life 1 when it came out, but HL1 has aged better imo.
The engine was really good with awesome gameplay capabilities including nice graphics, I think that engine was better than the Valve's one used in Half Life 1 and expansion.
Were the System Shock series great? I've played the Bioshock series (which are supposed to be the spiritual successors) so I just want to know if this series is great too. Also, if I were to play them, how scary is System Shock 2? Again, game seems pretty interesting. :)
Hey, how come you didn't talk much about the music? That's one of the game's greatest strengths.
Also, this game will scare the HELL out of you. I played it when I was 12 or so, and I never picked it up until a bit less than a year later. You WILL run out of ammo, and you will use your wrench.
I remember playing this waaaay back and yes Its superior to just about every single modern game these days....the ATMOSPHERE, voice acting, sound FX and music cant be beat
@biciunas it's made by the same creaters you idiot they even called it the spiritual successor it's not a rip off if it's by the same company don't bash games if you don't have a clue on what's going on.
Deus Ex was in development way before SS2 ever came out. The people who made both games share the same background to a large extent, but I wouldn't say SS2 was responsible for DX, they were more concurrent.
What I like about the game is the complexity and depth. Where your modern FPS holds your hand through a corridor of cinematic cutscenes you'll find old gems such as SS2 and DX are actively trying get you killed by taking all kinds of cheap shots at you.
im 11 and i played this be4 even in daylight honestly i got so scared and i play resident evil till like 3:00 i n the morning this game is scary good reveiw im gonna give it a second try i love survivle games like halflife im play halflife one trying to beat it so ima try system shck again
I thought it was a good review, up until the part where he gave it 100%. That's like calling something absolutely perfect and perfection doesn't exist in the universe.
@gilgamesh310 it depends on what stuff you like in your game, for instance, i give Dead Rising 2 98%, Call Of Duty Black Ops 95%, Halo Reach 15%, no you might wonder, why did i give Reach 15%? Well, because i just simply hate Halo and i personally think it's an overrated piece of crap for a series :)
@Epsillon42 Some bullshit Australian nerd accent. The double microphone compression really screws around with my voice. I should sound more like myself in my next review.
@Epsillon42 I record on my iPhone which saves it as its own file format (still don't know if there's a converter lying around) So then I use my computer's stereo mix to record the file again which reduces the quality. Finally it's weakened again by the final video compression. So I went out a bought a proper microphone to fix that.
@MrSnuggleduck Yeah from my own understanding, what most LPers do is they will play their game on one computer, and have a laptop or somehting next to them with their recording software, so they can record real time without any intermittent steps.
@LufsyLurqy I realized what I did there. Cyberlink has a nasty habit of doing that as a result of double clicking on a clip, speeding up the audio. Won't happen again, I promise!
@MrSnuggleduck I love system shock 2 i remember playing it in 2002 when i was still a little kid but know i have a modern day pc and i can't get the cutscenes to play? how can i get them to play when they are supposed to?
I've never played this game but it looks badass, i love Bioshock 1&2. I think they should make a System Shock 3, imagine how good it would be with modern day graphics it would be awsome.
look i love this game because it was made bofore bioshock the same team so if you like bioshock you will love this game but you might want to get a mod for the sound and quailt but if you are like me you dont give a shit you froget because it is so fucking fun
I just played this game for the first time this year. When I finished it I liked it so much that I played it through three more times! Ten years old and still as epic as ever.
Whys it so bright compared to when i play, And there was really no cons, all were opinions, except the have to heavily patch, which I didnt have to put in extra thing/patch to get my game to work.
@Gabezen101 I usually turn the gamma up to make it easier to see. I guess you could say that's a con, the shadow system isn't that great. The only really bad thing about this game is that it has aged rather poorly.
scariest game in the history of scary games more scarier then resident evil, doom3, bioshock (never played it so i dunno) and every other game in the world this is the scariest with scary alien zombie who say "your flesh will belong to us" once I got up to that part I deleted it right away. @theplock99 The hybrids are freaky alright. When they're walking around alone they mutter some strange things. I guess it transferred to Bioshock with the splicers.
@Koopsas About 10 hours if you're looking at everything. Definitely worth it to find all of the audio logs and hidden goodies.
"I brought down the last of the sim units today. I am full of the glory of the many. Here comes Bronson. I am at peace. Good evening Bronson, have you come to *gunshot* ARGH!"

Nah, no texture mods although I did use a wide variety of other mods like dual core fixes and codecs.
The main difference was I had it on high gamma, the game is far too dark for me on normal. There are texture mods like SHTUP and SS2 Rebirth, although Rebirth can ruin the monsters.
Yeah I like SS1 as well but it's really hard to get it looking nice on DosBox. It lacked some of the RPG elements but required you to take care nonetheless. It's also a very good game. I think SHODAN is far more terrifying in it too.

After EA pulled the plug on Looking Glass a bunch of Looking Glass ppl
incl Mr.Spector founded Iron Storm and started developing Deus Ex for Eidos.
Zockopa2009 1 year ago
@Zockopa2009 EA games made dead space and dead space might be inspired by ss2
theplock99 1 year ago
Well,System Shock 2 was not the inspiration for Deus Ex. In fact Warren Spector
developed the basic gamemechanics in the early nineties which resulted in a
game called Ultima Underworld and further optimized them for System Shock.
SS2 was a couple years later developed by Irrational Games, which is a splinter
group of Looking Glass who lost their first contract and made SS2 in Coop with
Looking Glass instead. SS2 is practically a professional fan project.
