I would like to use maxwell boostcaps (ultra-capacitors) instead of the a123 cells because they can discharge at 17500 watts per kg . if you grouped 175 lbs of boostcaps together it could dump 1.4 million watts of power which is 4.6 times more energy then the killacycle (at 300 000 watts)
Doesn't matter if he slept at the light, just trying to get a great ET. In reality, he could sit for 10 seconds if he wanted to and the timers would still show a correct ET. The timers do not start until you break the beam ie move from the starting line. Now it would make a huge difference if he was racing another competitor heads up.
I've watched this video so many times. I'm a nut for this stuff, take my word, within the next few years there are going to be things happening in the EV world that will be blowing everyone's minds. I love it.
I'm italian....in italy most people think...the gasoline motor are the best...and dont' worry of the futur...electric is for crasy people...help..italy shi* people..just ferrari, maserati, ducati, aprilia!! We are going down in all sector!!! help!!
I have to say doing 60mph on a paved road, with no engine noise is an experience most would love. It is hard to describe, very peaceful, but still exciting.
Congrats Bill on the 7 second pass, that is absolutely amazing.
I agree, the sound is cool...Nothing but tires and gears. It's different, but still cool in it's own way. I'd like to see a vid without all the extra background noise.
and to think these are all home made components, tinkered together by guys in their garage... you're witnessing the exact same thing that happened with Apple computers... the big boys didn't get it, dragged their feet... and now this... as the batteries, the controllers, the motors, the capacitors, get better and better... combustion will just fade away... the resources are finally coming on board, investors have read the writing on the wall.

I guess I'll just have to scream engine sounds out the window if I want it to sound good.
I could see problems with having to recharge, unless someone comes up with a way to charge batteries in a matter of seconds - or at least minutes, and have them last for a reasonable amount of time before having to recharge again. Keep in mind that this bike only has to last about 10 seconds for each run, I doubt that it would last through routine trips around the city, but I could be wrong.
there are rapid chargers... or you can just swap batteries like you do in your flash light. all dragsters are designed to blow their wad in a matter of seconds... the innovations you make at the track, lead to street legal applications... kind of like going to the moon and back.
Actually if the batteries are completely dead it could take an hour to fully charge, but once charged they can make approximately 7+ runs down the drag strip or approximately 150 street miles. After 3 or 4 passes at the strip recharging only takes about 10 minutes. The A123 Systems batteries are amazing!!!
That bike has enough juice in it's batteries to do some six to eight runs WITHOUT recharge !
And if you educate yourself you'll find there are now batteries that can be charged as fast as five minutes. Only the smarter - as well as simpler - way would be to just swap battery pack: that should be even fadter than you could fill up your gasoline guzzler !
However I still think the inventor is dumb for doing that failed burnout and crashing it. (with no helmet) He could have easily killed himself or someone else.
Sweet, welcome to the future of transport. Cars will automatically charge when parked in the garage, no oil changes/coolant etc required, no air filters/fuel filters/oil filters that need changing...... less servicing.... Cant wait!!
future does look interesting from this viewpoint, just need to wait for it to be implemented into cars sooner than later.. LOL at the thought of ppl pluggin in their cars/bike illegally i.e. work, etc..

@TheSolarmike what about the non-linear voltage drop during discharge? Although, I suppose for the drag strip that wouldn't matter much. ^_^

It sucks that it isn't all loud and smokey, but thats just what we have been conditioned to expect from a powerful motor.
Consider this: Every bit of sound that a motor produces is wasted energy :)
cybrown 3 years ago 2
I don't think it "sucks".
I've gotten used to ( "reprogrammed" if you will ) lots of different motor sounds through my years at motorsport(s).
Including extremely high-tuned two-stroke racing bikes, extremely high-revving mc four-strokes, Turbo-charged car motors,
and obviously open exhaust V-8 drag racing machines.
I'm honestly fed up with the noice.
I once got a thrill out of it, as I knew it "represented" power.
Now I just want the Power !
( without the toxic fumes and the noice )
