I registered as a democrat because that's what I always thought I was. But Ron Paul just hits the nail on the head for me. Clearly, we went to secure oil interests, settle a vendetta, etc. The question then becomes to what degree must military action abroad be waged in order to secure US interests?

I registered as a democrat because that's what I always thought I was. But Ron Paul just hits the nail on the head for me. He is pro-life and I am not but who cares about abortions his foreign policy points and smaller government points give me enough to want to vote for him. All the other Republicans are cartoon figures to me who offer nothing. Paul seems more real than Mitt Romney or Giuliani. At least his positions hold merit the others contradict themselves. The US detonated the bomb to avoid a land invasion of Japan that would have killed millions of soliders and probably just as many civilians. I, too, am tired of bloodthirst and torture. I am sick of being an embarrassment across the world. But local governments cannot address the challenges of this enormous nation. And while securing oil interests abroad by waging unconstitutional wars is criminal, aren't there some fights worth getting involved in? Europe would be speaking German if it weren't for our "big government," Somali warlords would still rules the streets, and ethnic albanians would still be dying in numbers in Serbia.

to commonsense987--on one hand I see Your point, but it seems that alot of the wars we have been dragged into have no benefit to us as a nation and are simply to feed the military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us about in his farewell speech.

a good point. I guess the issue becomes how we define our role as a nation. Do we erect a wall, both literally and figuritively, between ourselves and the outside world? Pat Robertson, among others, would argue that this is just. But when we are the most prosperous nation, do we owe it to the world to erradicate genocide, treat infectious diseases, and the stave off the ruthlessness of selfish leaders? is the sign of a great nation one who will lift others up with us?

bevan, it is nearly impossible to argue that we are in Iraq for humanitarian purposes, though this is the trash that the republican machine seems so committed to duping us into believing. Clearly, we went to secure oil interests, settle a vendetta, etc. The question then becomes to what degree must military action abroad be waged in order to secure US interests?

i will withhold my opinion of pat r., but i will say he should stick to his choosen profession.. the problem I see is that we have gone out of our way with all of these wars to be the humanitarians and it has gotten us nothing but massive debt.
