Such a boring B film. The actors didn't know what to do because they kept on changing the storyline. They added an extra bit to the ending they sliced some bits into the middle. The actors look directly into the camera for directions. It's like an home made B-movie.
@fallyfresh7 ...Cinematic legend. Speaks to the frustration of a very stoic psychology that japanese males have .... but its too violent for some japanese tastes. He's better known in the Silver Bear, Venice Film Festival crowd.
I think the problem with the trailer is it's misrepresented as an action movie in this when it's more of an art house film, that what happened when i saw Hana-bi and Sonatine, both great movies. their just not advertised correctly in my opinion.
@Godzilla52 You are absolutely right. The trailers to "Hana-bi" and "Sonatine" really try to create an image of a "brutal action film", or "an explosive new film", as this particular trailer describes it, while "Hana-bi" concentrates on feelings for the most part. 70% of feelings, 30% of violence - that's how I personally see "Hana-bi" ("Fireworks")

Where can I watch this film? I can't watch it on Netflix so I guess I'm pretty much screwed, cause I know my local video rental store is not going to have it :(
Just watched the movie...it certainly needs a rewatch because I as an audience didn't do my part of really watching and understanding. There's so much this film says symbolically.
Of course because my shoulder is sore, I just really could not concentrate as I usually do. But the end got me. ...from my first watch though, I have to say it's a good film. And will most likely be even better my 2nd watchthrough.
Japan has better stories than American movies.......
now days in america, they don`t give a shit about stories....... they just makes movies look cool with computer graphics and stuffs for ex. I am number 4
If you've never watched any Takeshi Kitano movies, then you've just hit a vein of gold. His movies have violence, but really the main thing about his movies are peace, tranquility, and beauty. You have to see it to understand what I'm saying.
@92310CAMILLE he also did those paintings for the picture (he's an amateur artist too).. i somewhere red him joking that he mainly made this movie to promote his paintings hehe
i saw this movie and sonatine when they first came out and loved them but thought i was maybe reading too much into them. Having read a lot of these comments it seems that i wasnt :)
Takeshi Kitano is amazing! His movies are unique and very original. There is violence in his movies, but there is poetry and magic unlike anything I've ever seen, and the music is always great. If you've never watched his movies, then you are missing something.
Hana-Bi and Dolls are in my opinion his best two movies. Hana-Bi has everything a good movie should have, while Dolls is an awesome display of beauty.
True yakuza! It kinda reminds me of Scorsese's TAXI DRIVER (1976) except it's Japan. I'd say it Kitano's best film since SONATINE (1993). Very powerful for me to watch, Kitano shows what yakzua is all about. One of my all-time favorites and a must see for any fans of Japanese cinema (including yakuza films like this one). :)
Way better than Mitchum I would say. More in line with the (acting) talent of James Coburn, directing of Sam Peckinpah, and editing of Martin Scorcese.
One of the greatest films ever made. For a wrong-headed laugh, check Ebert's lukewarm review of it. Kitano recovered from his accident and poured his very soul into this movie. The music, the imagery - easily one of my favourite films ever. Bravo, Beat Takeshi, this film will live forever.
One word - Dope as F***, oh sorry thats three words! This flick rocks, just finished watching at 2 4 h o u r m o v i e . n e t and had to come here to post about it before I connect my laptop to my 50" LCD and watch again in stunning high def! Yessir!
@Kankannan it's hard to do a ranking. i've got a very broad taste in films. and for me there are different types of favorites. e.g. movies i love but wouldn't watch again. like man bites dog, funny games or reosemarie's baby. they were too disturbing. BUT: masterpieces. most films i can watch over and over again, are trash movies and cheesy actioners. i love john waters' flicks, especially pecker. another favorite is commando. and then there are dawn of the dead, shaun of the dead ...
@Kankannan ... and some german / austrian movies like silentium and der knochenmann (the bone man). well, our favorites differntiate much. but i also like leone's westerners and studio ghibli movies. did i already mention my broad taste? ;)
I love this film. I feel western cinema has rejected the real not "Spiritual" issues but the "Things we cant really touch" eg the sacrifical roles that are presented in this film. Even western films which do present this point fail to have people like Kitano behind them, for example Kitano is a megastar in Japan, myself speaking as citizen of the United Kingdom, has no one of his standing to us as an example. And no one even near his level would attempt such risks with this kind of film.
Kitano often says his performances, movies too, are all plays, that is not serious at all, but movie is convenient when the harvests are arranged from every field. He has recently started the work of news commentator at live, and college professor, morepver he's been comedian, TV personality, politc commentator, actor, painter, poet, novelist, and love Mathematics. But his movie works are special, filled with elements usually we cannot see, all arranged and destloyed.
I saw this on my DVD copy of Hana-Bi and I must say I was shocked.... this is a COMPLETE misenterpretation of the film! It's perhaps the worst example I've seen for making a film out to be something it's not... a violent action movie for example...!
I wonder if the scene @0:50 is inspired by Le Samourai?
