@aliceintokyo1 Erm, that is why I said *this* type. Amphetamine Logic, anyone? Amphetamine gonzoid filth, perhaps? Talk to Eldritch about finding beauty in dark unexpected places and he'll probably laugh and call you a hippy. Or, well, a goth. And then sing You Could Be The One at you. Just sayin'.
This song sounds quite different on the 12". Common practice to make videos sound different, if nothing else it was assumed the speakers in the TV would be fairly crap, and you have compensate... I still wish it sounded the same.
Goth is not about the romance of death; bullshit. This sort of goth is about mooching around in Leeds wearing shitloads of leather whilst on shitloads of speed.
I was probably the only kid in my high school listening to this... a glorious kind of loneliness... a couple of years after this came out, we would go to Respectables in West Palm and dance to Souxsie, Sisters, DM. Ah, for those lost days of swine and roses...

oh! this gourgeous song had blew my heart away same as all THE SISTERS OF MERCY SONGS i cannot believe how come a gourgeous man like andrew can make all these dreams and these beautiful feelings and then, express them through all his songs and finaly make them come true?....he can make them happen..and he definetely knows what a woman loves and desire to feel loved . i fall in love with him just as i fell in love with all THE SISTERS OF MERCY SONGS. i love you andrew and thank you.
sigh, i spose the 'goth' tag came about when specimen started the batcave club in london and it all went a bit severe, bloody great times though, wouldn't change it for the world.
Funny thing, most bands from the 80's that are classified as " Goth" , be it Sisters, Siouxie, Bauhaus and so on, don't consider themselves as such and some even will deny it ( like Robert Smith ) , nevertheless, is interesting to see how have they influenced the current Goth bands ....
At the time, the term "Goth" didn't really exist. All the bands you list were lumped under the "alternative" tag. There were a few pretend vampires around at the time but they were laughed at really. It was more like a tribal thing.
I came across the term "Goth" in the late 80s, but in my perception that was to label - or maybe insult - some sub-sub-fraction of a greater Punk/Wave/Alternative scene. When Sisters etc. were 1st generation, then the bands labelled goth were 2nd generation, so I can see why The Sisters, The Cure, etc. don't see themselves as part of it.
Deathrock, that term sounds pretty awesome to me =) In the No Time To Cry TV appearance from 1985 the host calls them "psychedelic rock". Its nice to have a variety of descriptions.
These bands were also called post-punk (together with Joy Division) and this is my favourite description, although i don't think music styles should be imprisoned by single terms.
@oramikleepunk. I'm 45 and grew up listening to these guys, Joy Division, Black Flag (saw em 4 times), The Cure, Circle Jerks, etc., etc., And the only terms used back then was Punk and New Wave (which was the more synth oriented bands). Punk or Post Punk labels are used nowadays...but back then (during the late 70's to mid 80s), the words "punk music" was often used by people who listened to the radio and/or hard rock and it was meant as a derogatory term, like a loser.
@RisingTornado ur absolutely right, i remember seeing SOM in 84 with Eldrtich, Wayne, Craig and the Dr. doing there last tour with the original members, wished Gary would have stayed to complete the tour but drugs and ego broke all apart. Andrew post the WAKE 84 is good but never the same. It would be like having Robert Plant without the Zeppelins. Yes, we part of the punk ROCK scene called the psychedelic underground and loved it moment. first, last and always...
I agree with you...there were no goths in the 80's and early 90's.Alot of black metal singers were wearing black, but that had nothing to do with the goths of today.
you are utterly wrong. i grew up in the nyc scene in the early 90's, pre Nine Inch Nails destroying everything. It was a very sexy, closed, and cool scene. It was death rock. The west coasters were more Victorian. We kept it makeup velvet leather. we had limelight on tuesdays, pyramid fridays, and the bank on saturdays, not to mention michael t's ny nights mondays at pyramid, which crossed over into glam a bit. it was gorgeous and metal free til NIN taught the guidos and retards our secret
@shadowgeek101 Sorry but I think gothic is an architectural style of the late medieval years and nothing like dark and macabre. The gothic church were built to praise god. Sorry again, maybe it's tough to realise it since you are old enogh to type on your keyboard.
I personally dont care for the whole goth/emo argument going on. I find labels like that just lead to limmitations to what the artist/band can do. To me its music, good music for that matter. I wouldnt say that its wrong to catergorize their music itself, but to associate cultral tendencies with it is just dumb. I am not goth or emo. I am only a young man who likes music. That is all.
Agreed, if anything, labels prevent wonderful bands like this from being as widely heard as they should have been. The Sisters are on their own, making nothing but Merciful rock music.
Are Goths the ones that never joke or smile or have a laugh?? how can anyone bar an Aspergers Syndrome patient force themselves not to 24 hours a day... i ask Ya??
Aspergers Syndrome??? Are you sure you know what ya talking about??? Don't think so. It seems you have no idea about goths, emos, waver or whatever they're called.
Yep, he (not the band) always denied to be a goth. But sorry, he make goth music, looked like goth, always played on goth festivals and by the way... he still does.
:-)))) But of course... Sisters of Mercy are no goths. :-)))
I'm relatively new to the Sisiters. But of the songs i've heard I think Dominion M.R., Marian, More Ext mix, and Afterhours are the bollox :) are there any other Sisters songs like these?? Cheers.
" seeing him nowadays, balled, just feels like The Sisters of Mercy has lost all that gothic rock appeal"
I suppose, if you were only into them for the image and the fashion. Some of us can manage to like the music without worrying about what the band looks like.
I reckon Andrew Eldritch was way more appealing back in the 80's & 90's where he had all that hair, seeing him nowadays, balled, just feels like The Sisters of Mercy has lost all that gothic rock appeal, though he's still a great singer, and the bands awesome.
EP from 1984 released before First and Last and Always.Other tracks: Train, Body Electric and Afterhours.Had never seen this video though. AWESOME!! I loved it. Amazing electronic drums, Dr avalanche rules!!
I feel like i have come across some kind of relic!! tks for posting this!!
reminds me of the Psychedelic versions on Peel's sessions ,because like here, we have different music arrangements.
Lately I discover that this song is perfect to dance SALSA !!! Yes, if someone knows how to dance it this song is perfect to do this. Rythm of this song is perfect to enjoy salsa - dance of sex :D
fairly weak song penned by the redundant Hussey, nevertheless given the BS the record company shoves down our throats nowadays, its a classic, ty for posting :)
Fuuuuuck! I never new this song had a video, I'd give this 6 stars if I could - bloody amazing. Great to see Gary Marx there aswell, I wonder what younger rock fans make of this, as it has no parallel in todays music scene thats for sure!
Andrew's already got new stuff, he just won't put it on record...
I'm sure someone can explain it better and more thoroughly than I can, but Andrew just refuses to pu up with record labels & etc., so all new material is released live, because the profits from concerts vastly outweigh record sales. Look around for bootlegs, but don't expect an official record any time soon...
I must be, because, no, I never read that in numerous places...Ever. Never. I totally made it up to be cool. You know, all the cool Sisters fans think they know everything, and anyone who may have heard innacurrate things must be some sort of mentally invalid.
Funny thing is, Andrew makes songs like these with a music video like this, then he acts likes he's in a stupor of why anyone would call Sisters of Mercy a 'Goth Rock' band. I wonder if for ten years a lead singer of a grunge band kept playing grunge songs and kept the look and appearance of a grunge band, then walks onto the stage one day and asks why no one calls his band a Punk band, it wouldn't make any sense either, right Andrew?
Hehe I completely agree with you. I've read somewhere that Ronny Moorings (Clan of xymox) embraced the "gothic rock band" label sinced it helped them sell CDs. Good for them! On the other hand, we have Andrew who says that everything he ever did is not "gothic rock"? Come on!
they must be called Dark, Post-punk, other names are stupid. Bowie is great cause doesn´t have brands. A exemple is the band INTERPOL, wich is successful cause didn´t let the name goth have associations. But in the end, The Sisters are the best goth band.

Wayne Hussey dies and goes to heaven. At the pearly gates, he meets up with
Gabriel, who gives him the grand tour of Heaven.
While touring, he sees many familiar faces, including Jimi Hendrix, Ian Curtis, and
Mary Shelly. And of course Nick Fiend kinda shows up once in a while...
And then he sees Andrew Eldritch sitting on a HUUUGE throne..
Wayne says to Gabriel, "I didn't know Andrew was dead!"
Gabriel replies, "Oh, that's God. He only thinks he's Andrew."
I thought it fit the comment well!

a poor track on an otherwise excellent 4 track 12 inch single especially Afterhours and the redone version of Body Electric.

fairly weak song penned by the redundant Hussey, nevertheless given the BS the record company shoves down our throats nowadays, its a classic, ty for posting :)

.........I love Sisters, but not this song. It looks like a bad copy of the Great "Heart and Soul" by joy Division

Fuuuuuck! I never new this song had a video, I'd give this 6 stars if I could - bloody amazing. Great to see Gary Marx there aswell, I wonder what younger rock fans make of this, as it has no parallel in todays music scene thats for sure!

When the fuck ae they going to record some new stuff.

Weren't they supposed to release some new material in 2007?
jeepee2 3 years ago
Andrew's already got new stuff, he just won't put it on record...
I'm sure someone can explain it better and more thoroughly than I can, but Andrew just refuses to pu up with record labels & etc., so all new material is released live, because the profits from concerts vastly outweigh record sales. Look around for bootlegs, but don't expect an official record any time soon...

Are you totally mad?

I must be, because, no, I never read that in numerous places...Ever. Never. I totally made it up to be cool. You know, all the cool Sisters fans think they know everything, and anyone who may have heard innacurrate things must be some sort of mentally invalid.

This song truly is devastatingly perfect. Deep, dark, and emotionally riveting...Andrew's voice and the guitars...oh man...perfection...

Funny thing is, Andrew makes songs like these with a music video like this, then he acts likes he's in a stupor of why anyone would call Sisters of Mercy a 'Goth Rock' band. I wonder if for ten years a lead singer of a grunge band kept playing grunge songs and kept the look and appearance of a grunge band, then walks onto the stage one day and asks why no one calls his band a Punk band, it wouldn't make any sense either, right Andrew?
djargus 4 years ago 7
Hehe I completely agree with you. I've read somewhere that Ronny Moorings (Clan of xymox) embraced the "gothic rock band" label sinced it helped them sell CDs. Good for them! On the other hand, we have Andrew who says that everything he ever did is not "gothic rock"? Come on!
jeepee2 4 years ago
they must be called Dark, Post-punk, other names are stupid. Bowie is great cause doesn´t have brands. A exemple is the band INTERPOL, wich is successful cause didn´t let the name goth have associations. But in the end, The Sisters are the best goth band.
