The film footage would have been transferred to video. If you transfer it to a video format like MiniDv, then you can easily upload it on to your computer, and you still retain the 'film look.'
For digitising super 8 film, products like the Workprinter, Sniper, Flashscan 8 give good quality results...though the experience and skill of the operator is just as important as the equipment. A more expensive option would be a Rank transfer. Ask around at different film transfer businesses and see what equipment they use.
