@12Radius - blimey! You managed to dig out the first version I did of this! The latest version is with my new 8 piece band and which should sound blistering once we've polished it.
hey man.. amazing job.. i plaey the intro a little different,, could you tab me it? your version sounds sick i play it e string 0 1 and all.. acount is kocis19
Thanks Michael! I never like understatement ;) Haven't actually played it for a while but should be doing it live on a UK radio prog this Sunday with my WildeWest duo partner Alex West on flute which gives it an extra twist. The prog will have an hour's worth of stuff about me / us and I should be able to make a net version of it available in next couple of weeks.
yessirree - gig confirmed ! check out the special Q-Tube festival channel for all the details, just click on the link above. great to hear you'll be doing this one on midsummer's night in The Netherlands, Mark ! we'll be in touch shortly with a fresh bulletin on the latest developments. cheers,
It's comments like this that make the related angst, hardships, failed relationships, missed career opportunities, hip replacements and dandruff all worthwhile! :)
Seriously, it's very difficult to guauge how you're doing without this kind of feedback. I think I view myself mostly as a decent all-rounder with the various elements being reasonably balaanced. It has really been the discovery of DADGAD since 2005 that has given me a good deal of renewed inspiration and revitalised interest.
Praise indeed! The idea of doing it this way was a natural process of evolution when I decided to look to do as much as possible in DADGAD. I have never used a pick and prefer not to but great things can be achieved with picks (listen to Richard Shindell.)
Fine flippin' job man. Love the song searched for the best vid to help me play it. Although more involved than I had intended, it is perfect the way you did it here. Thanks for the info. very small suggestion, drop the "r" off of Columbia to make it sound more 'red' redneck that is.
I am msot flattered K! Many thanks. I have no real idea what inspired me to re-work it in DADGAD after playing it 'straight' for so long but it does work exceptionally well for it - especially in acoustic solo format as it adds extra edge and depth. (I had to think through the whole song to find where I actually sing 'Columbia'!)
hey man awesome job on this song one of my favorite stevie earls...i play it in d to no capo tho i have a ovation that 12 string behind u is a ovation isnt it
Much appreciated! As a Brit, I feel a bit fake doing these great Amercian tunes! Until middle of this year I'd played it on the Ovation (Custom Legend 2000) in straight tuning in D but then decided to try it in E in DADGAD and now play ot like that always.
Really awesome job! I have never seen the song played the way you do..I practice when I can and hope to develop my own style on hit songs like you have here. Cheers!
Tx! I've found that in solo mode especially it tends to work best in DADGAD tuning as it has that big open quality about it and also sound a bit meaner. Have even now adopted this approach in full band too for same reasons. Will try and get clip of band doing it soon.
jees an old eko i remember them when i was a kid in the seventies,im suprised your playing that with an ovation at hand, great cover though man !!!!

Really nice sound you have for this song...What tuning are you playing in? You using drop d and what key are you in here? Awsome job.
SalMinnella 2 months ago
@SalMinnella
Thanks. That's quite an old version now!
I play 99% of the time in DADGAD. I use standad tuning incredibly rarely these days foir anything.
The old EKO is now retired and my main instrument is a Martin D28-12 which in DADGAD sounds great.

wow.. hands down the best version of this song i've ever heard! have you got any sheet music/tabs for that?
derdude 3 years ago 2
Yeah it was pretty good. But don't ask for tabs. Listen to the song. And try to make it even better.
That's how I learned to throw the tabs away.
Just see how it turns out.

you know I should hate folks like you...
I have six guitars, bought my first one forty years ago, and when I listen to stuff like yours I am reminded I still can't play worth a damn.
Love your stuff.
Many fine artists are lousy technicians, and many fine technicians are boring as hell,
you nail it right from both those perspectives. This sounds like you have 12 good fingers on your right hand, never mind 12 strings.
Thanks for uploading.
