while I completely agree that John Carmack is the more advanced programmer but you are massively overlooking John Romero's programming skills. He coded the editors as well as a number of his own graphical games.
The fact is the height of iD software so far, and probably the best 1st person shooter ever made, was Quake 3. Romero is an amazingly talented designer and made Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake the legends they are today, but Willits and McGee are just as good... and there is Only One Carmack. Romero should never have left iD software. iD was greater with him, and Romero is less than without iD.

No dude, that would be John Carmack, he programmed the whole graphic engine, without him, Romero would be doing text based games.
