  • One of my favourite.

    "Kyt kiroilee"...

  • what instruments are used? and what can be said about the harmony, tempo and melody?

  • @iLuvMajorettes2012 Sorry, English isn't my mother language. The tempos are usually uneven. I can't inform you about all instruments, but I know they sometimes use "jouhikko".

  • jujutz

  • Don't understand a single word and it just doesn't matter - I understand music, and this is a fantastic example of it.

  • I think I prefer the version of their 25th anniversary concert:

    watch?v=mtUa-q9pxAE

While the voice sounds a bit 'damped' there (at least on the YouTube) it still has more power - or at least that is my experience.

While I find many Värttinä songs to work very well on their live arrangements - some are even 'better' and some just different but still 'as good' as the studio version - I guess for 'Riena' the CD version is still the most intriguing I have heard - a real classic.

  • Makes me want to learn Finnish.

  • The band from Arthur!

  • What does "riena" means?

  • @gargamel11a "Riena" can be translated as either "blasphemy" or "profanity", depending on the context. In this case I'd say the meaning to be the latter, given that the narrator appears to be mocking and swearing at an abusive human subject instead of a godly one.

  • @MarionetteJaeger According to Amazon the song title translates as "Anathema" ... but that's still about the same thing.

  • @RumCake37 Isn't "anathema" usually used in a religious context, though? As a synonym for excommunication? As a native speaker of Finnish I still fail to find religious meaning behind the lyrics so I'm not quite sure about Amazon's translations. It's true, though, that the word "riena" can have - and often has - a religious undertone in Finnish. Of course, in the end, the "correct" translation comes down to one's own personal interpretation of the lyrics. Anyhow, I thank you for your insight. =]

  • Suomalaista kansanmusiikkia.

  • Almost better than Bananarama!

  • I wish i could understand them. the song is very nice.

  • hienoa!!!

  • Bravo!!!!!!!!

  • eii, ku oon salosta :D

  • Kyllä me suomalaiset näköjään osataan. :D Todella hyvä biisi, suhteellisen helppo laulaakin, ainakin jos on Itä-Suomesta kotoisin. :)

  • i love it!!!!

  • Värttinä on kovaa kamaa,, ,en tiedä -vaikka kansainvälisissä vs.

  • fucking TECHNICAL!!!

  • Kumut soundaa osaavissa käsissä! Go Kumu Go!

  • Never heared this music before, but I like it. What a great voices, and Kumu drums :)!

  • One of their finest tunes; beautiful and charismatic perfomance!

  • Kipunoita isken kääntelen kekäleet...Great!

  • I wish I understood finnish. My family is part finnish but I know only how to say hi and bye and those are simple....*sigh*

  • HAH you know more than I do

  • really

hi is hie and bye is hie hie

    simple

  • WTF ? :-D

    Hi = HEI

    BYE = HEI HEI

    Have an nice day

  • oops

i knew i had the spelling wrong

but i was to lazy to change it...thats what lake of sleep does to you

  • there is no need to unterstand it :) its just beautiful and melodic !

  • There's no problem for me to understand what they are saying. I love Värttinä's songs, they remind me of my own roots and listening to them feels somewhat nostalgic :)

  • Verta vihani vuotaa

    viiltää kipu kiroten

    verta vihani vuotaa

    visvaa viiltäen

    Siinä onkin hyvä kirous

  • I'm finnish and there is no problem to understand the words. I'm from Helsinki.

  • easy for u 2 say:-p

  • @thehalonen , please post the lyrics in English. Thank you!

  • I'm Brazilian and that happens a lot with me when I'm listening to Brazilian songs.

Sometimes I just can't understand what people sing. :P

  • Täh? Aika selkee tää mun mielestä on, ku vertaa joihinki muihin värttinän biiseihin.

  • It is Finnish.

  • i'm finnish and i can understand every word they're saying. i grew up in kuivajärvi. it's an area between savo and häme and the dialect is very rare. it's very similar with this one. the save-häme-border-dialect is probably going to die with me.

  • Onpa ihmeellistä, että ymmärrät, vaikka olet suomalainen.

How amazing that you understand, Finnish!

  • oi kun olit hassun sarkastinen siis hahahaha wau oikee #1 biatch. tolla kommentilla vastasin siihe ku kaikki suomalaiset valittaa ettei ne ymmärrä sanaakaa tästä biisistä.

  • Nykyjään ei taida oikein mikään murre voida hyvin. Alkuperäinen Pohjois - Karjalan murrekin on kuolemassa kovasti koristen.

  • Sepultura - Kaiowas =)

  • "LiisaSuomesta" means "Liisa from Finland ;)

  • Hi Liisasuomesta,

where are you from? (I see you're from Netherlands, so I mean from wich city? Amsterdam?)

  • I've seen Värttinä live once, and it was soooo amazing ! The songs came alive on stage. And I must say that the old finnish language really sounds great.

I am really proud of me being finnish and understanding what they say here :)

Värttinä is something too amazing !

  • Hi Qbeltane,

oh, are they singing in old finnish language? cool..:-))

that's a great song, I like it a lot! I'm hungarian so unfortunately I don't understand what they sing, but the melody and the rhythm has caught me fair and square :-). I like ethno-alternative music a lot and this song is very high-standard XD...I wish I understood it..

  • and, Qbeltane, can You tell me what are they names? I mean: what are the three girls name? I know Mari Kaasinen is standing in the middle (I hope I wrote her name well..) But I don't know the name of two other girls.. I think the lady on Mari's left side is very beautiful. (And the lady on the right side too.. :D) very good voices and song.

  • Hi all fans,

yes, in the middle is Mari Kaasinen. On the right side is Johanna Virtanen and on the left is Susan Aho. She used to be the accordeon player of Värttinä and some years ago she began to sing. Now she turns out to be the best singer of them all, at least on my opinion.

  • oh, thanks a lot, Liisasuomesta :-)))

    best wishes for You.

  • Yup, they actually sing in 'old' finnish, of course it is almost the same as the finnish nowadays, but some songs (for example varrii ompi tsaijuvesj) are almost impossible for most finns to understand either! :)

And Värttinä sings in this eastern finnish dialect, which has some words of it's own.

  • And so I did. They saved this piece for the end, weasels ;) Do I have to say the concert was great? Hail Värttinä!

  • Oh, and a quote that just came to my mind: "I FUCKIN LOVE THIS BAND! THEY ARE THE BEST BAND EVER! PERIOD!" Hehe;)

  • I hope to see this one live next friday in Poznan, Poland. Cheers to all Värttinä fans!

  • What's your problem? This is THEIR style.

And what about her being fat? She's a beautiful woman with a great voice.

    Go Värttinä! \o/

  • I'm a little sticky after watching that!

  • Älyttömän hienoa! Vuorotteleva rytmikuvio on tosi vangitseva, samoin soundi.

  • Nothing to say except bloody awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Even thought I think the Cd version is better, this performance is awesome. They're always giving the best they have. The musicians are amazing! (the girls too of course). Long live Värttinä !

  • The music is wonderful, the musicians do a great job and the voices are wonderful. In fact, you are seduced by the girls performance and voice!

  • This Rocks.

  • after hearing to thiz ..it made feel dat i've wasted 20 yrs to some junk music... im 20 now...

  • wow, the beginning scared me, potent stuff. Thanks for posting it

  • Comment removed

  • @kal3vi I have no idea what it means, but I totally agree!!!

  • Wondering if anyone can help me...just heard a clip of one of their songs and I'm trying to find out which one. It started off with some violins and the vocals went 'wee-oh-wee-oh-wee-oh'. Would appreciate it of someone could let me know.

  • Maybe it's Äijö?

  • It's Matalii ja Mustii. ^_~

  • Thanks!

  • Wow, it's amazing !

  • Allmost could call this progressive rock :D haha

well, folk-music and this song is something between folk and a traditional spell, like a curse. Another same kind of curse is Värttinäs "Äijö" which tells about an old man putting his spell on a snake that has bitten him... Don't know is it in YouTube, but if you like this, find "äijö" too!

  • If you like rock in this style, maybe a band called CMX is for you. search for CMX

  • Kymppi tuli! :-)

[soupir])

  • Helló!

  • What is this music? Progressive folk? It's fantastic!!!! Brilliant!!!!

  • It's Finnish Folk Music, very traditional actually. No wonder it's new to you, we are very ashamed of you're history :D I think we shouldn't, Värttinä is so awesome :)

  • Well, actually I'm asian. And thanks for replying :)

  • Great song, one of their best.

  • I love those biting harmonies!

  • Miero is such a dark album. :)

  • Where are they performing in this vid?

  • Varttina are the best!!!!

  • I saw this on LinkTV. It was awesome.

  • It is just me or this intro is much similar to Sepultura's Kaiowas ? :)

  • ahhah
