beautiful video really. Do you know any other camcorders that are closest to the HV30 with a budget of $650? I'm stuck..i just really want a good camera with good quality like this.
This is a great cam. I am not a fan of cameras that record on flash. They often record on a weird format (arch or so). Hard to convert. You need a good pc for that. Plus tapes r easy to run. I am from Germany but live in America so it's great that this camera has both formats. Trust me go tape
I just got one that goes on right away. Some people get fancy and get adapters and such, but it's not needed unless I guess if you want to take the macro pictures from far away and still get the same results.
NikTee123 i am also interested in the answer to your question so if you have found out please let me know. I am also interested in how well the files are handled/edited! With the old HV range it was tape, these new vixias are hard drive i believe which creates a AVCHD file that is considerbaly more draining on your system
I've actually didn't even do pulldowns on this video. If you guys want to see one that did have pulldowns check out "The Escort" on my channel. I used CineForm to do pulldowns.
not much. The biggest difference is that the HF200 runs off of flash memory, and the HV30 uses dv tapes. They're both great cameras, it just depends on your preference.
Hey, nice video! I might want to make a few videos that are artsy kind of like this one. I'm interested in buying a macro lens for my Vixi hv30, but I'm looking on amazon for a cheap one and it seems people report that there's a vignette looking thing in the video you shoot with the lens on. So I'm wondering what Macro Lens do you use? Because it looks fine (No vignette)! So please get back to me soon! Thanks~
ummm... i've had the camera for a while and i havent figured out how to rack focus between background and forground. usually when i just MF and turn the knob the background AND foreground falls out and in of focus in sync with eachother. Any ideas? perhaps the lens you were using? or am i simply doing it wrong
Hey this music is from the film Crash!!! :D Truly one of my favourite films of all time... And nice work! I can see the tree bark shot was inspired from Meheh's Slow motion test footage :P
Hey man, nice vid. One question... when you're shooting the trees and the lights (0:43 - 0:59), are you using the 43 mm lens? or is it just you focusing and unfocusing with the vixia alone?
It's basically a magnifying glass for your camera. So you can see small objects as if they were big. Like for example the water drop or the flowers or bugs. It will also give you extreme shallow depth of field, so unless you are using it for something close, and something you can get close to, like maybe 3' away, then you should not use a macro lens.
I got the Sony HDR xr500 but I returned it because I was getting a hissing sound in my recordings. They had this camera for the same price and they allowed me to exchange it for the other one. I haven't really shot anything yet (i'm reading the manual right now) but after playing with the menus I was happily surprised at the amount of manual controls you you get. The sony doesn't even have a sound level meter on screen!!!
Yes, and also if you want to get an even better sound quality, you can always get an XLR shotgun microphone and get a preamp for it with a XLR connection just so it would override the HV30s onboard amplifiers. Since the onboard ones are not so great, a good preamplifier would get rid of the excess noise. Hope you enjoy your HV30. :)
i have actually been researching this. Im thinking of the Beachtek (I forget the model number). Whats your opinion on it, or do you have other suggestions.
Hi Again, I have the BeachTek DXA-2S adapter, but I am not sure whether the JuicedLink or other adapter would be better. If you go on either site they both push each other down that one is better than the other, so I don't know which one is truly better. Sorry that I cannot help you in this.
I hope im not bothering you, just one more thing. Are you satisfied with the beachtek then? Or is there something else you would rather be using? It sounds like you know what you are talking about so I trust you opinion.
I am satisfied with it very much, as a matter a fact, if you add me as a friend, I can allow you to watch one of my videos where I used the BeachTek DXA-2A and the Audio-Technica AT897 together. The hissing sound is eliminated which is a total plus. Once I plug in the adapter, the bars that used to tingle around 3-4 marks are now gone and only the sound is picked up at the same level as previously or just a tiny bit higher, but obviously if there is no background hiss, you can up that in post.
I appreciate this video, it confirms that I need to buy one of these for my indi-film project. Did you film this footage ona tripod? Also, can someone please confirm to me why the majority of these videos have no intrinsic sound in them? I mean no sound from the originally shot videos that aren't overdubbed. Is sound part of the post editing process in making a film?
Hi, yes this was filmed on a tripod however I used a very cheap one the first day. As I mentioned before, this movie was made about 20 minutes right after taking the camera out of the box. Some shots were hand-held though. Oh and for sound it felt like it would be better to cut out the background sound for this video. If you want to see a video done with sound, check out my video "The Escort" which shows how the HV30 records the sounds.
Thank you, I understand to get that theatrical sound I would have to actually post-edit the film, but I was wondering if any of the intrinsic sound was actually salvagable if using a decent microphone. I actually have a studio condenser mic that I am wondering if it would be good for this sort of thing. I will now view your other video.
Yeah I agree this is a very nice video. I too have premiere pro CS3 and I'd like to know if you could give export settings as well. Thanks in advance, I'm a newb to all this and I'm really trying to learn. Take care!
This is atotally awesome video. Seen it on Vimeo and this vid was the one that motivated me to buy the Canon HV30. I have a question...I have adobe Premier CS3...could you recommend export settings. Thanx a lot for any info you can provide. Great Work!!
Check out some other footage that I have on my account. If you check out "Ventura Beach" then you will see how the camera looks without any color corrections. I had the sunset setting on at the time when I filmed it. Now if you check out "The Escort" movie, then that was a movie that I filmed with the HV30 and had some color correction, and effects added to it.
Back then when I did this movie, I captured in Premier Pro. I did not know about the Pulldowns that need to be done, therefore it might lag a bit in some shots. Other than that, now for my own movies when I shoot at 24p, I use Cineform to remove the pulldowns in realtime capturing mode. Check out my newest video "The Escort" if you want to see a 24p footage with the pulldown removal, and how it looks. :)
how did you get such amazing quality?? did you export in premiere? wat were your export settings in premiere pro for that escort vid? watch my 60i to 24p video and you can see that its not as crisp as yours. i exported my project in 1280 by 720 res. h.264 codec, 100 quality, square pixels, and 5000 bitrate and apple lossless audio at 32khz. i did a pulldown in AE for 24p and it still didnt look nearly as good as yours.
For my movies I always use the Windows Media format in Premier Pro CS4. I set it to HDTV 1080p 24 High Quality, and then further tweak it to have a 10000 kbps video. Then in the audio, either you leave it or put it on something like 256 kbps, 96 kHz, 2 channel 24 bit VBR. You can go much higher than that but the sound quality probably won't even be noticible between those settings unless you have a very powerful and crisp speakers.
oh ok. im not sure if the media encoder in cs4 is like the one in cs3. but ill check that out. so windows media...you use a .wmv? about how large was your final uploadable file size for that escort vid?
With the settings I had for the escort movie that I told you about in the previous comment, the whole movie was roughly 500mb. You can however encode it at 720p with the same Media Encoder and set the kbps at 5000 and the video will be at around 200mb. YouTube I believe uses the 720p settings anyways for it's HD quality so you don't really need a 1080p resolution for YouTube.
Yes, I always do 2 passes, however this will take a lot longer than just single pass. Please subscribe if you wish to and comment on my Escort movie. :) Thanks.
done and done. just one more question...sorry lol. i notice there are windows media hdtv encoding presets for 24 and 25p but i cant seem to find something that would help in 60i or 30p that would yield the same quality. could you help me on that one? wat extremely high quality preset would i use for those framerates?
Hey Jewrabs. Thanks for subscribing and commenting. What I usually do in CS4 is that I pick out a preset from the Windows Media formats and then customize it by changing the frame rate in the settings of the encoding. That way you can just click on 29.97, which is either 30p or 60i.
it depends what I want it for. If you are going to run the video on a slower computer, then export in 720p, but if you have a powerful computer then export in 1080p. For YouTube, I usually upload in 720p, unless I have a lot of time to upload in 1080p, since those are a lot bigger. Also, usually when I work with 3D stuff, and mix things together in After Effects, rendering times can become ridiculously long, so I just work in 720p. Hope this helps.
im thinking about buying this one too, can you give me some info on it too. you can attach other lens to it ? and it has manual focus for sure right ?
Hi, I really like the camera, don't have any problems with it. Although I recommend getting some ND filters for the camera. If you are planning to shoot during sunlight, there will be a lot of light. This will make the aperture close which will make a higher depth of field. If you want a shallow depth of field, the ND filter will cut down on the light allowing you to use a wider aperture, which is going to give you a shallow depth of field. Other than that It's nice.
One more thing. I needed to start another comment. If you want to film at night, it does become a bit noisy, so it is not the best camera for night shots. Also, if you have some time before buying the camera, the HV40 is suppose to come out in March. This will have some improvements, and also have a native 24p filming possibility. Right now you have the 24p setting, however it still records in 60i. If you get the HV40 which comes out in march, then you will have a full support for 24p.
oh thank you very much :] you are so kind. i was about to buy this camera for sure, but one of the thing that i dont like about it is that it record on mini-Dv. so hopefull the hv40 will shoots on flash memory. which will be more convenience for me to do all the editing.
Hey, unfortunately the HV40 will still record on mini-DV tapes. The reason for that is because you will get the highest possible quality with Mini-DV tapes since there is no compression used. On DVD, HD, or Flash camcorders, there is a compression added, which will slightly lower the quality of your movie.
Thanks for the comment. Yes. I am locking the exposure for my future movies. This was the first time I took out the camera from the box, so I was still getting familiar to the settings.
Yes, 24p, but you will need to remove the Pull downs. Since this was the first time working with the camera, I did not remove the pull downs, that's why you might see some jerky motion in video. So without pull downs it is 29.97FPS where after every 4th frame there is a duplicated frame made to go with 29.97FPS, but once you remove the pull downs, you get true 24p footage.
You need a program that will remove pulldowns for you. It's a 3:2 pulldown you need to remove. Unfortunately these programs are not free. The one I use is Cineform. There are free ways of doing it, however it is much more complicated. I believe in Adobe After Effects CS4 you can also remove Pulldowns when you render out your footage. Hope this helps.
why no HD?

Also, does anyone know if this can film underwater, or if there's a way to make it waterproof?

1920x1080 with MiniDV tape is impossible!
MiniDV captures in 1440x1080 not in Full Hd!
The resolution of the video processed by the Canon HV30 is 1920 x 1080. If you capture live via HDMI, it will be the full 1920 x 1080...........
In order for the camera to store the footage onto tape, it must resize it to 1440 x 1080 with a 4:2:0 color space. That's HDV Standard specs
what is their secret?
satanofmadness 2 years ago
You captured this video with firewire or HDMI capture card?

If you get the HV40 which comes out in march, then you will have a full support for 24p.

oh thank you very much :] you are so kind. i was about to buy this camera for sure, but one of the thing that i dont like about it is that it record on mini-Dv. so hopefull the hv40 will shoots on flash memory. which will be more convenience for me to do all the editing.
lykhoi96 3 years ago
Hey, unfortunately the HV40 will still record on mini-DV tapes. The reason for that is because you will get the highest possible quality with Mini-DV tapes since there is no compression used. On DVD, HD, or Flash camcorders, there is a compression added, which will slightly lower the quality of your movie.

nicee.. :) but try to lock ur exposure;)
TheoO18 3 years ago
Thanks for the comment. Yes. I am locking the exposure for my future movies. This was the first time I took out the camera from the box, so I was still getting familiar to the settings.

Yes, 24p, but you will need to remove the Pull downs. Since this was the first time working with the camera, I did not remove the pull downs, that's why you might see some jerky motion in video. So without pull downs it is 29.97FPS where after every 4th frame there is a duplicated frame made to go with 29.97FPS, but once you remove the pull downs, you get true 24p footage.

how did you remove pulldown?
TisimeFilms 3 years ago
You need a program that will remove pulldowns for you. It's a 3:2 pulldown you need to remove. Unfortunately these programs are not free. The one I use is Cineform. There are free ways of doing it, however it is much more complicated. I believe in Adobe After Effects CS4 you can also remove Pulldowns when you render out your footage. Hope this helps.
