I agree, this album sounds AMAZING. I love how it's as much a story as music. I can't wait to listen to it in full length the next time I drive to visit my parents in MD!
This album, just, wow, I mean, words just can't describe. Tori, just when I thought you couldn't blow me away anymore. I have that feeling of the first time I ever her again. Her most ambitious, greatest work to date (imo). She is like the finest wines, just keeps getting better. Thank you Tori ,Goddess, we are blessed.
@diggerjohn111 i meant homework in critical theory, and i said "conceptual circles", not musical circles. she's a virtuoso, but she recycles the same mythical tropes and composite figures over and over, and they get staler every time she does it. at least Gaga's got a theory to go with her pop that says something about our relationship with celebrity and with visual style, something violent and vital. Tori used to be an uncontrolled firebrand. Now she sounds like a Pacifica graduate.
i think she's just thinking too much about everything. her earlier work packed so much visceral, emotional punch, and her later work seems so careful, and so carefully thought out. i'll give her another chance, but i'm not particularly optimistic. i even like the premise, and the narrative of internal, traumatic drama, but something tells me it's going to be the same tepidly constructed swill we've dealt with since "scarlet's walk".
@MrZebra69 that what I find more and more disappointing in her work as the years go on. it seems like she is overthinking everything. too guarded. she used to sing and write directly from her gut. and the songs reached out and grabbed me right in my gut. even if I didn't especially like a song, it still touched me. not many of her songs move me at all these days.
@diggerjohn111 you must be kidding. this is marion woodman 101. gaga runs conceptual circles around this. i'm not saying i don't like it, but please do your homework.
@MrZebra69 How can anyone say Gaga runs circles around Tori, unless (maybe) you're talking on the dance floor. Tori is a MUCH better piano player than Gaga. Anyone who's ever taken a music lesson would know that!!! Also, "Judas" by Gaga is no "Father Lucifer." It doesn't even come close!!!!
This is the opus I've long been waiting for since I became a Tori Amos fan. I knew she had it in her. The musical structures are appealing and well beyond cliche pop music formulas, and the lyrics mix artistic and symbolical storytelling with a strong and relevant message to the modern day. As a music major, I hope that the sheet music for this work will be published as well. I'd love the opportunity to participate in an ensemble performance of any part of this work during a student recital.
A Goddess. Tori is AWESOME! :D

@MrZebra69 LadyGaga is a crappy Madonna/David Bowie cross over, wanna be. Don't tell me about doing homework. I started listening to Tori in '91.

I would love to see Lady Gaga of Ke$ha attempt anything this intellectual and intriguing. Fat chance.
