J.R.'s just being J.R. as usual, trying to get used to his new step-daddy and all. However, I always thought the way Donna Reed was treated was deplorable. It was beyond cruel, and as a previous poster stated, this was the last good season of "Dallas".
I do think DR would have been more accepted in the role if her version of Miss Ellie wasn't so upscale. Not sure if that was the fault or hers or the producers at the time. But I never hated her as Miss Ellie. She definitely got shafted, though.
Bel Geddes' Miss Ellie was more down to earth than what Reed was doing. Here she is shown with pearls and looking very upscale. Whereas Bel Geddes looked more like downhome. Either way it was interesting to see what they both did with the role. How much was Bel Geddes paid at the time per episode?
The interaction between them was so short, I don't think you can read anything into it. Plus, this was fairly early when she first came on, they had probably filmed this before there was any audience reaction to her as Ellie, which was not good and probably helped sway him to the opinion that Bel Geddes really needed to come back. Bel Geddes was fired from the show because she wanted more money, she did go on her own
I see nothing, just actors being directed through a scene. Remember, they probably shot 4 or 5 versions of that particular cut. Hagman was just hitting his spot and reading his lines flawlessly, as he always did. Professional actors are professionals, and personal feelings rarely show. Rent Wuthering Heights some afternoon, in real life Mearle Oberon and Laurance Olivier absoltely HATED each other. Yet on screen they have incredible chemistry together.
Donna Reed was a far better actress than BBG. Way better, she didn't have that annoying quirks when she pronounced PAM instead of saying it PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM like BBG or LUU-CEE! Instead of Lucy.
Interesting what you (the poster) say about the Reed/Hagman chemistry - I am inclined to agree. On a totally different matter, sorry, does anyone remember the scene in season 7 (I think) where JR is almost repentant to his lover-cum-whore about how bad he is "...what have I done! A young lad is in hospital..."? Such an important yet ambiguous little scene.
@thesubtleface I just watched that on DVD yesterday!! JR was visiting his longtime ho Sarena. He did basically come by to just talk and be listened to without being judged or by someone wanting something from him. JR even told her he "didn't want to have sex!" Can you believe that. In the same episode, Serena shows up at restaurant to "bump into" JR & Bobby (set up by JR). She is accompanied by another ho, played by Tracy Scoggins, who would become JR's lawyer in 2 Dallas movies in the '90s.
Larry Hagman was very fond of Barbara Bel Geddes. The main reason for him accepting the role of JR was due to her being in the show in the first place. No one is perfect and no wonder he didn't took very well her being replaced. That was the main reason he probably didn't like Reed. In an interview he said that Bel Geddes's temporary leaving Dallas was a mistake, culminating with P. Duffy's departure led to a decline of the show.
First off - if you're a fan of Dallas, you should know that this is Hagman acting. Larry Hagman is a professional and this is his tone throughout the series. Regulars will also have been familiar with his looks. This is direction and acting and nothing more. Donna Reed was a fine actress, regardless of personal feelings on how she portrayed the character of Miss Ellie.
But don't dare slate Hagman. It's a well known fact that him not winning an award for JR is thought of as outrageous.
No one should hate Donna Reed. She was a fine actress. She just had very big shoes to fill (Bel Geddes). I am not saying one actress was better than the other, But Geddes WAS Miss Ellie.
I'm sorry, but I don't see anything other than acting. With that said, it appears that Donna Reed was treated very badly - and unproffessionally - by the producers & actors, Larry Hagman in particular, of Dallas. It was not her fault Babs Bel Geddes chose herself to not act in the 1984-85 season. Ms. Reed was given a job to do & did it nicely, despite uneccessary and petty behavior by her coworkers. As far as I was concerned, this was the LAST really good season of Dallas. It finished #2 in '85.
I think it was his reaction to her changing the furniture, and more at the guy in the hat. He was interested in the truck as to why it was there. This was acting, not tension. I would say Donna did a good job playing a woman who was "swept away" and possibly being played by the dude in the hat. J.R. was just protecting his mother and in disbelief over what was happening.
I think you've completely misread the whole scene and why Jr and Miss ellie appeared frosty (if you can call it that). Prior to this there was the incident with Jocks painting, whereby it was removed so that Clayton would feel more comfortable. The bedroom furniture was again about making Clayton feel more at home and less in jocks shadow. Ellie was merely putting her foot down in a very subtle way, while JR being Jr was less subtle. This is acting, not off screen tension
I do not in any way whatsoever approve or condone the video entitled "Donna B***ch" or any profanity towards Donna Reed. I posted this video merely to point out the tension on screen that was very evident to me of what was going on off screen. I totally respect Ms. Reed and don't feel to insult her, just because Barbara Bel Geddes was better. Thanks.
You are a person right after my own heart. I love the way you watch - you don't just watch you also observe. GREAT! And I see what you are saying...you helped me to notice it too.
This version of Mama (Reed) spoke so whispy and acted like she wasn't sure what was going on. Lol.

Donna Reed was an academy award winning actress and star of her own television show. What awards did Larry Hagman win?
rdm2000uva 1 year ago
@rdm2000uva He may never had any awards but compensates for popularity. And Hagman was and still is a popular actor all over the world.

Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes) would never have any such thing as buy new furniture. She was never that shallow.
