One of the main reasons that the commentators were so excited about Monette Russo was because at the time, (with a few exceptions) she was the best gymnast we've ever had, and had a chance of a medal, which she did leave with. As the commentator said, it was the best performance ever, and thats reason to get excited!

@veranationgirl I would hardly call what she does singing, she's awful and if it weren't for autotune, she'd be making every single dog within a 100 mile radius howl, she should have gone into coaching, at least we know she knew her gymnastics, her music is a joke.

i think its kind of annoying that this channel is SO biased to australian gymnasts. ive never seen american tv do anything like that.

Not so sure about that! I watched US coverage of the anaheim worlds, where the US won and Australia- for the first time in history- won a medal, and I did not see one single australian gymnast's routine in the coverage! All countries are biassed toward their own atletes. It is frustrating though, i agree.

and the reason they didnt show austarila was because they didnt expect them to come close to a medal so they showed romania china russia and the us-the medal contenders.

hum... really? cos everytime i watch a meet with an american channel, they are oh-sooooo biaised! i think it's just what people are like, cheering for their own contry, there's nothing to it, but it's annoying for foreigners! :)

ok i guess american commentators do have a little bias towards american gymnasts, but i mean in the case of nastia and shawn its kind of understandable, but i do think they give a lot of attention to the chinese in about equal measure and also to the russians like anna pavlova.

that's true. but sometimes i wish they weren't so condescending towards "little" countryies (gymnastics wise, that is), like australia! i heard the same meet, with usa commentators, and they hardly talked about monette at all! i suppose it's hard to get it right, between too much fuss... and not enough! :)

You're obviously joking. I've been watching gymnastics for almost 20 years and the NBC coverage is the definition of bias! Watch the team finals at the 2008 Olympics: they showed 12 American routines, 9 Chinese, 1 Russian and 1 Romanian! Plus, the Al-Elfi-Tim trio of horror can't stop drooling over the American gymnasts and noticing everyone's mistakes but their own!

i mean, there is bias in the commentary, but it's definitely calculated and coached in order to appeal to the masses. the majority of people who watch gymnastics do so casually, and they will just end up cheering for their country. since NBC has gymnastics slotted as a primetime sporting event, there isn't a lot of flexibility in the quantity they can show. to the suits and advertisers funding NBC's coverage, it's just not worth it to show anyone who isn't american or a foreign rival or standout

THEN DONT WATCH! I dont want to see all these nobody's during the competition at all. I will save that for Youtube. But not during the actual finals. Other countries show more of their own as well, cept they arent as strong as the rest of the world hence the BIAS. Dont like it? change a diaper1

@Davylp If you are happy with a narrow view of the world, no wonder NBC is good enough for you. Australian and BBC coverage is more extensive. We may not be serious contenders in the UK but I would rather have fuller coverage than complete bias and nationalist crap.
