If a weaker nation attacks military targets, how is that an immoral act? When did gaining territory through war become immoral? And then Germany launched its despicable invasion of Belgium just because that country would not allow the free passage of German troops all the way to France. So, in light of the appalling loss of life and destruction after World War I, the Treaty of Versailles was quite lenient I think.

If a weaker nation attacks military targets, how is that an immoral act? When did gaining territory through war become immoral? It became immoral once the main colonial powers you mention had finished conquering their new territories.

If nations like Russia and France mobilized their troops on their border with Germany, then the ethical thing for Germany to do would have been to mobilize its own forces. However, aggressors like Hitler should have taken steps to negotiate gradual, if not immediate, demobilization of both German and Russian forces. One can't attack the enemy for self-defense if the enemy hasn't attacked in the first place.
