Remember Burmese history is bad for their generation so they didn't wrote any history of where they came from. They are good lied. Trust me most Burmese soldiers are ugly and they don't even care about dead forever.
Some Karen people came to my temple (a Cambodian temple). One of the guy knows Cambodian. Over the weekend we had a big celebration and they performed some dances. It was really interesting to see other cultures like Karen people who are kinda hidden like Hmong too. =)
For now, I live my life peacefully... and every karen people around me could read and write karen language, so well...
By the way... You fucking burmese !!! Don't you dare to talk about Karen people from your fuckin' mouth !!! You're just a mother fuckin' burma !!! Wait and see !!! I'm gonna erase your family !!!
Sure... One day, I'm gonna live my life for my race... Well, I don't care if anyone would arrest me or not... Neither if my mom would kill me for speaking about this... Um... well... I'm gonna try my best for Karen People after my mom's passed away... Coz... my fore grandpa had started this... and if it isn't end until I'm ready to take his steps... I'm gonna do this... My Grandpa's Saw Ba U Gyi...
Well, let me introduce about me ... Maybe I'm the youngest here... Well, I really don't know if I should tell you about this or not... I'm a Karen... I love my race... And one day, I'm gonna follow these steps of my fore grandpa... Well, according to all of your comments, I'm telling you that... Ya, I speak both thai, s'kaw-karen, burmese, and eng... And still, I'm trying to learn eveything I can as I'm still young... Well, I don't know much about these military of Karen people... But...
@unitedstateofamerful grammars? drink my cum again kayin, then u will stop using broken english, no such thing as grammars, only grammar, go back to yr jungle shit eating kayin. hahahhah
interesting what you are saying. I have visited DKBA camps and helped feed the monks and mostly my role is to help the karen children . I have never once in 5 years of being there heard of atrocities bring commited by KNU but im not saying it didnt happen. interesting topic thoughh
At one stage, there was a division among the KNU. Most of the leaders of KNU were of Christian faith and majority of the non-leaders are Buddhist. The Burmese government saw this weakness and send in spies to create discontent within KNU and then finally division. There was chaos and things done that were questionable. Now the problem is who are the people creating the problem? The Christian faith leaders? The Buddhist KNU? Or the spies?
It is obvious that the spies had created a lot of mess witin KNU. There were internal fighting between the Christians and Buddhist/. The Buddhist were demanding leadership, obviously throught he intigation of the spy.
Once divided, the KNU lost its effectiveness, the burmese army capitalised on it and defeated them.
The claim that the KNU rape, burn and beat up women seem to conform very much to the version I heard. Don't we think that the activities is similar to the Burmese army?
may god bless the Karen people after being abandoned after the war by Britain, on the promise of a free Karen state for fighting against the Japanese. The worlds forgotten people ..
Thai Karen has adopted basically the Thai culture and learn to speak Thai. Similarly, the Karen in the current Myanmar cities are speaking more Burmese than Karen. If the karen are not careful in preserving their culture and language, they will lose them all in time to come, just like the young Chinese in Thailand and Indonesia.
I have heard very little about the Lahu tribe. We used to help a girl by sending her to school in Chiang Mai. She was actually from the Lahu tribe, but somehow she was abandoned when she was little and ended living in an Akha village.
Unfortunately, she was led astray by her boy friend and ran away from school. The school had expelled her. We had no choice but to send her back to the Akha village. I don't know what happen to her now. According to tradition, I think she will probably be married.
I seem to get a slightly different story. I heard of fighting between the Akha and Lahu tribes in some areas of Laos. I guess, sometime it is instigated by some people trying to destroy the peace between the 2 tribes of people.
i think we(karen) are trying the best we can man. do u think karens can speak karen openly in Myanmar cities. Also, they are trying their best to preserve their culture by fighting the Burmese military. You might wanna add that to ur considerations when u say if the karen arent careful, they will lost their culture.
Hi, it is good that you are trying hard preserve your rich karen culture which I like so much.
I have many karen friends who migrate from Myanmar in Singapore. They speaks more Burmese to their children instead of Karen language. Their children are now schooling in Singapore. As Singapore schools use English, obviously neither Burmese nor Karen language is taught. They took up Chinese language as a 2nd language. If the Karen language is not spoken, it will soon be forgotten by the young.
I also noticed that some of the young karen people, who had lived outside their karen community for a long time, have forgotten much about the karen practices and culture.
I believe it is true of those in Thailand, unless they still stay in the karen community. Inter-tribal and inter-ethnic marriages also post a risk with globalisation. Therefore, to preserve the karen culture, it require extra effort from the karen people.
yeah it is pretty true that young generations karen outside of karen communities can't speak karen at all. I am a half-blood karen, My mom is a buddhist S'gaw keren but she can't speak karen, only my grandma spoke karen when she was alive. we used to listen karen words when my grandma was alive. but we had little interest in it.
the other reason that we apart from karen community is we are being a buddhist karen. most relatives from my mother side are baptists or catholics. my grandpa was a catholic karen and grandma was a buddhist karen both from irrawaddy delta region. My mom said grandpa passed away very early and they become buddhists though the two eldest daughters were christianize at first. later on they also pratice buddhism.
I would love to learn karen language if i have a chance...
I understand the situation because I feel I'm in the same boatl. I don't speak my mother tongue well because our government had tried to suppressed to use of diaglect. Today, many of the young people were unable to speak their diaglect and as a result, we are losing some part of our culture and root.
Language is a part of ethnic culture and root. If the language is lost, part of the culture is lost. It is important to preserve them. Karen language has nothing to do with religion.
Incidentally, I find that the karen in the refugee camps in Thailand have preserved the karen culture well. In one of my visit to a refugee camp, I witnessed the karen dance, which is very interesting.
kAREN LANGUAGE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN ON bURMESE SOIL AS THE JUNTA DO NOT ALLOW IT. kAREN LEADERS AND TEACHERS DO TRY VERY HARD BUT THE COWARDLY DKBA WHO JOINED FORCES WITH THE JUNTA HAVE PERMISSION TO KILL RAPE, AND DO WHAT THEY WANT TO THEIR ONCE BROTHERS IN ARMS..GOD BLESS THE KNLA
Where do you get your information from?I know apprx 250 karen people and they still SPEAK their language,KAREN,and practice their culture. Karen people have to trust you before you really get to know them.Maybe you should get your research by knowing who these people are.People adapt to their surroundings, but don't lose who they are.we have a lot to learn from these people.YOU HAVE NO IDEA!
I am merely expressing my concern about preserving language and culture. I am not criticising, so don't see the reason of being so defensive.
I know some 20 karen peoples living in my community. They moved from Myanmar to Singapore. They speaks karen language, but their 5 to 7 years old children don't and can't. In their everyday communication, they speaks Burmese if not English.
Preservation of language and culture has to continue with the young. If they are not exposed from it at all, in time to come they will lose it.
I say all this because I have witnessed and observed it. Not merely hear say. Of course, I am also aware that karen communities around the world do preserve and practise their culture and language and that is good.
I BELIEVE THAT THEY ALSO GOT A GOOD DEAL FROM THE DRUGS MARKET. Have you any idea what goes on in Karen state now.. Im not having a go but i want to dig deep to find out what the real truth is

I'm wondering where I can find the music to which the following lyrics might be set:
"Y'wa is eternal, his life is long.
One eon--he dies not!
Two eons--he dies not!
He is perfect in meritorious attributes.
Eons follow eons--he dies not!"

One good way to learn the karen language is from those who are newly relocated in your country. Look out for them.
They usually struggle a lot in the new environment with language barrier and difficulty in getting job.
Karen refugee camps in Thailand has schools to educate karen children. They are still proficient in the karen language.
