Why should people want to speak the language of an old colonial power? I think it is time for an international language and maybe we all can communicate and understand each other a lot better. In England we have a bad education system and we don't learn languages very much. We are not encouraged to learn them and therefore i think this is a real problem for us.

Lothar did just fine for a man who was born and raised in Germany, a country not overflowing with fluent English speakers. There's no real reason why people should expect his English to be better as he played all his football in Germany. Also bear in mind that he was educated in the 60s and 70s, when English did not feature so prominently in the German schooling system.

Vom deutschen bzw. fränkischen Akzent abgesehen, ist sein Englisch gar nicht so schlecht. Er spricht relativ fließend und schwere grammatische Hämmer sind auch relativ selten. Westerwelle, Helmut Kohl und selbst Albert Einstein sprechen bzw. sprachen ein weitaus schlechteres Englisch.
