Back in the '50s, I was told that homosexuals preferred not to be called homosexuals, or homos, or queers. But 'gay' was an adjective they would not find offensive. I was also told that gay was derived from the fact that Gay Street in the West Village (Greenwich Village for you non New Yorkers) was near Christopher Street, a gathering place of diversity in the City. Since there was already a religious group called The Christopher's, Gay was adopted. Anyone else hear it this way?
Awwwwwwww back in Da Day when this was really called" Rhythm N' Blues" and Not Doo Wop... I remember we tried to sing this song as kids when we out walking back in Da 50's...lol
Any one Remember the Gay 90" When makin love was makin out. Words & sayings change over the years. Wow that was boss or that's hip. Gay ment being a HAPPY go LUCKY care free person. Great song. Where did you find it? If you live in Seaside CA, then we are neighbors as I live in Monterey. Where can one find such stuff around here? SF?
There are some good groups still - even today. You just have to find them. Check out Daptone Records. That label puts out great new (vintage sounding) soul bands. Like Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.
This is one of the best. Unfortunately, my modern-music loving friends laugh hysterically everytime they hear "I will be gay." Oh well, I guess some just can't respect the true art of doo-wop.
I didn't know it meant brightly colored. I just always thought it meant happy. I know the word was turned into a homosexual term sometime between the 50's and now.
@ILOVEDOOWOPMUSIC the word "gay" was never meant to have any sexual reference to it. It has been around for centuries and always meant to be Happy or Glad, but just like a lot of other words, the word itself, (not it's real meaning) has been made into something perversive. A whole lot of older songs used this word and it was meant in this song the way it should be used today..Happy!!...Glad!!
can we all just enjoy this fabulous music without all the comments that have nothing to do with these songs?? give it up and just LISTEN"""

THE SODOMITES STOLE THE WORD GAY, NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE THE WORD MARRIAGE MEAN HOMOSEXUAL. INSTEAD OF HETEROSEXUAL.

it is funny when you here gay and it means happy instead of stupid or retartred. As in that sweater from the 80's is so gay.

@soulmak9
It was about 1966 when homosexuals started to adapt the term "gay"!!!
This song was recorded about ten years before the term was coined.

Absolutely fabulous song. My friends and I used to sing this song when we were teenagers. It's a happy and carefree song, not like the garbage today.
