Back in the '50s, I was told that homosexuals preferred not to be called homosexuals, or homos, or queers. But 'gay' was an adjective they would not find offensive. I was also told that gay was derived from the fact that Gay Street in the West Village (Greenwich Village for you non New Yorkers) was near Christopher Street, a gathering place of diversity in the City. Since there was already a religious group called The Christopher's, Gay was adopted. Anyone else hear it this way?

It has been around for centuries and always meant to be Happy or Glad, but just like a lot of other words, the word itself, (not it's real meaning) has been made into something perversive. A whole lot of older songs used this word and it was meant in this song the way it should be used today..Happy!!...Glad!!
