The music sounds different based on your sound card. There's no "higher quality" version of the game, it just depends on the sound card you have. The music is not actually recorded but is simply a music "sheet" that corresponds to different sounds (for most people, General Midi) on the sound card.
I think the one from Microsoft's FTP server and the one from the CD both use MIDI. When I played it (CD version) with MS GS Wavetable Synth it sounds like this, but if I use my old 95 computer (which has a SBLive card), it sounds different.
Well I still have my original disk that came with the Windows 95. Whenever I used to play it, it had an awesome soundtrack. The music was more bulky and sounded less Super-Nintendo-ish. However I haven't had my windows 95 for several years now, and when I play it on any other computer there is unfortunately no music at all, whether I use the disk or download the game. I don't know what it is, but I do know that my Hover played better quality music on my windows 95 back in the day. I miss it.
I had downloaded the game a couple months back, and the music was still this... I'm not sure why, but the music on the Win 95 disk version of Hover had music that sounded like it was made from real instruments and not computer-generated stuff.
@TWern9 Yeah it did, this is because the game would use the best sound available and the only one commonly still in use is GeneralMidi, you were probably lucky enough to have AdLib back in the day :)
@Sirtopeia Different people had different sound cards. Depending on the model of the sound card, the MIDI music will sound different. Mine didn't sound like this either, but I probably had another kind of sound card.
@TooMuch2Soon I would if I still had my Windows 95. Maybe depending on the sound card like others said, even though it's probably very hard to find the right one that worked well with the 95. Although I may try the game on my newer laptop that I haven't tried it on yet just to see what happens.
ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS?!??!?!!! I haven't seen this game in AGES. I loved it back when I was younger, I'll have to dig though I'll old discs to see if we still have it.
@Sirtopeia Im subscribing so i can get it! XDDD Favorite PC game Period!!!..... .... wait these comments are really old. Well I'll give this a shot anyway. *subscribe

Thanks for the nostalgia! Now wonder how hard this would be to remake it on XNA. I think I just got a new game project idea.

This is the midi music... this is not the actual original music. I have the CD and find that the music in the game is better than this midi music.
TWern9 2 years ago
erm... it is directly recorded from the game, i recorded it myself
maybe you just have a soundtrack of a higher quality version

@Sirtopeia Um, he's right. This is not what I heard when I played it. The version I heard was a 1000 times better, not this midi crud
