@rkss27 absolutely correct. Remove the affected drywall, eliminate the source of moisture and put up new drywall. Interior of the wall can be pre-treated before putting up new drywall. That would require a professional. You'll not find anything at your local home improvement store that will effectively control mold, regardless of what the labels tell you. It's good to see that there are some people commenting that actually know what they are talking about.

Im no pro or anything, the thing that scares me is that it looks like it came from inside the wall, ya know? if you spilled something it woulda shown up differently. you should probably cut a small hole in the wall and check the outside of the house near that area, or even the roof to see if water is leaking in somehow. I suspect when you cut a hole there you'll find a lot more mold, hopefully im wrong.
Not to freak you out, mold can kill you but also be completely harmless. hit or miss.
Actually if you have to take down the wall it is not expensive if you dont have to replace any wood, drywall is relativly cheap (should be under 10$ for a peice 4 feet by 8 feet) the hardest part would be to matching the paint with the rest of the room or you could paint the whole room a dif colour if wanted.
ok,so my thinking is that the spores got in the house, and just germinated behind there b/c there wasn't much light and prolly some humudity condensation. i'd look into a fan, or a dehumidifier, or both. simple fix, not expensive, and as far as the replacement of the wall goes, dude, i'd look behind the wall, like on the other side and see what's what. also just use your nose and if you smell something awful, then yeah, replace that mess. peace mon ami
@recyclingismylife I think more important and useful info requires some answers from him. 1: What kinda climate do you live in. 2: do you know how well ur hosue in ventilated (Question 1 useful here).
yes you have to replace your whole wall most likely i remove mold for livivng and that looks bad from the outside i can only imagine the inside its probly everywhere inside your wall if its that bad on the drywall
well you'll probably have to tear out that section of drywall bleach does not kill mould it will grow back best thing rip out the area see how bad it is behind the wall and go from there because if u dont it will spread to a bigger area which could cost thousands of dollars
Never saay you are poor. You will create and live that reality.
Maybe I don't understand your question, but I have never heard of removing a wall because of such a small amount of mold. Bleach removal was good. You can also try peroxide regular strength or distilled white vinegar for enviro-friendly. You might also want to buy "Damp-Rid" (about $3) and sit it near the wall. If you have more cash get a dehumidifier.
There is a antimicrobial anti mold paint from Caliwel that would resolve your problem. Once applied mold will not grow on the surfaces.
The Caliwel product is safe green rated and something you can apply with no trade experience and it will keep the surfaces disease and mold free for years.
You must find the problem and fix it. Ive heard bleach can actual cause it too get worse so go to Lowes and get some stuff that kills mold. If it keeps coming back you didnt fix the leak and or you need to remove that part of the drywall. Good luck with you. Mold seems to find me lol.
@brianputney1000 Bleach is not a solution to mold problems. Many species of mold are not killed by bleach. The spores simply become bleached and no longer visible. The ions contained in bleach will not allow the bleach to penetrate even porous surfaces. That means that even if you are reaching the species that can be killed with bleach, you're only getting what is on the surface.
go to your local home fix it store i.e. homedepot and pic up a product called mold control it is about $8.49 works really well on getting rid of mold and preventing it from coming back. bleach really dosn't remove mold it just bleaches it like if you were to bleach your jeans from walmart so they looked more like ones from clothes cafe' they are still walmart jeans no matter what

Your problem is on the other side of that wall (exterior). Your isolation is not done properly, so that creates cold bridge. That means that cold from the outside gets through the wall which causes moist which causes mould. This is a common problem for everyone. If you are isolating your wall never use Styrofoam insulation panels (polystyrene) it evaporates. English is not my native language.
As a professional, should you not suggest that he uses a Digital Moisture Reader to find out if the moisture is in the wall or just on the surface from possible room humidity before he starts ripping the wall?
And as a Pro, I'm surprised you didn't point out Bleach may kill and clean Surface mold but after the 3-6% Sodium Hypochlorite evaporates, the spores can actually remain in the water content of the bleach.
If it's just surface get a mold killing chemical. Paint over with oil base primer.
kilts paint. its for mold. you can get white or what ever color but paint a few coats on and ur good to go. shouldnt bee anymore mold. uhhh i think i might be alil to late u might have already fixed the problem good luck
using bleach & water should do the job..but you should keep ur house clean like vacuum clean it coz mold spores are everyehere & they just need some moisture & oxygen to grow & spread
First thing is shit yourself with worry and drink a lot. Okay once that is done, stop worrying.
I'm guessing you surfed you tube and have already found a number of answers. I have a $2500 job to be done on two rooms and an attic.
Depending on when the house was built, you may have a Big problem of moisture build up from the attic down into the walls.(My issue.) Or as someone has suggested a simple surface issue with a cold spot in the corner of the room that create the condensation there.
You may also have a small issue where the vapor barrier to the outside wall was missing in that area. Dry walling is easy. If you own a house you should learn.
You can get a free estimate by Mold removing pro's, BUT before you do that buy a kit for testing for mold that usually comes with a book to help you identify the issue.
Lastly, With respect I don't like the "Paint Over it " idea. It doesn't remove the cause.
Due to moisture; you probably need more ventilation in that room. Also, I work at Home Depot, and I saw paint that prevents mold build-up. I forgot what its called but check out the paint dept.
Acetone will get it but you might have to repaint the wall after, also if you might want to check the basement or crawl space in the same area so you get it all IT WILL come back. Straight bleech might do it too, I had to do that to my bathroom got a cheap high too, so get a respirator. Your still an Onion
First of all, find out where the moisture is coming from. You shouldn't "fix" a problem that's just going to come back later. I'm with the "get a specialist" crowd.
i used to get a lot of mold on my bathroom ceiling because of the steam from the shower. we kept trying to clean it off, but it eventually it returned.
this summer we decided to re-paint and add a mold resistant to the paint when we mixed it.
or you can start off with a brand of paint meant for that like Perma-White or KILZ. i prefer KILZ, but i've heard both work well. whatever is at the home depot should do the trick.
we re-painted in august & i haven't seen mold since.
go to a home improvement store. Get a fungicide and apply it accordingly to the description. If it comes again take off the plaster and replace it with new one. Then apply fungicide prophylactical. If it's a panel you'll have to replace the panel. Still apply the fungicide in both cases.
After that don't let the room get cold. Warm air holds more humidity than cool air. In cold rooms the moisture stays on the surface and the mold grows better.
Dehumidifier. Plus in the summer it's good to keep a fan going not just an air conditioner, cause those cause moisture in funny places as well. -The jerk.
no matter how manny people think your weird , gay stupid it dosent mater cause there are those who think you a great person and make great youtube vids iv been watching your vids for a long tim like befor shane dawson was popular so like a year and a half maby and i love your vids
sheingels and crap and re-do every thing and get ut roof //atic checkt for more your total will be 22,000 we checked prices every ere that is the cheapest so were moving it was a tiny house any way and its not healthy to live in a house with black mold if your home is a newer built home it probably wont come back just keep moisture out as much as possible ps ur freaking awesome
i have the same problem it spread to other parts of the hose these guys told us ether move or tear the walls down put up new ones then take every thing of the out side
Moisture will do it, I would suggest checking the pipes as well but otherwise if it is not a water problem then you should be okay with just cleaning it.
You just need to scrub it once with a high performance multi purpose cleaner. My dad does it for people around the neighborhood. Make sure it has a high amount on ammonia and if you use it stay out of the room or area for atleast 2 to 3 hours.
oh and i recommend if you dont like high powered products or cant afford them. Then just use comet to clean it. with hot water. If you dont use high powered cleaners it will most likely come back due to that corner of your room is probably the coldest or the most secluded area. It can cause you harm in your lunges if you do not expose of quickly but it only can kill if it was somehwere close to your head for example if it was under or behind your bed that is very dangerous good luck onision
well if the mould is like blackish with wierd colours with it too.. get it checked.... And i dunno if it works but try like vinegar or something... aha I've never had mould so I dunno..
Formaldehyde( formalin ) is a extremely potent fungicide, but I don't know if it's easy to find in stores and it can have some health effects. Citric acid might prove useful, since it's an acid. Tea tree oil, you can find it in most herb/ natural medicine shops is an effective mold and mildew killer, but it's expensive.
However, by far the best and cheapest way to remove mold is vinegar. Plain vinegar has an efficiency of over 90% in killing mold.
i would check outside to see if there are any areas where moisture can get in... otherwise I would call someplace and have the problem fixed before it get bad.
You probably have flat paint on the wall which is not washable. What you want to do is prim the wall with some stain blocking primer (Kilz) and then put some paint on the wall with a sheen such as eggshell, satin, or semi gloss. That would make the wall cleanable.
You also want to find where the moister is coming from. Check out side and caulk any cracks you may see. Also make sure the room gets proper air circulation.
try something with a low acid level..like lemon juice or vinegar. but be sure to wash it off afterwards...or you'll have smelly walls. i'm not 100% if it will work, but acids kill most other things!
Open a window in that room and run a fan into that corner of the room with your dresser still out of the way. Mold and mildew thrive in moist, warm conditions. It would not hurt to spray it again with bleach and water in a few days. Just make sure you fan it dry and get some fresh air in there occasionally.
If you can, I'd suggest that you'd get someone in to inspect it, because it could be multiple things, and I'm not sure if it's the camera, but as many people spotted out, it looks black, which is toxic. So try to get an inspection done by a professional, because there's not much you can do to really see the underlying problem causing the mold.
I don't think that you'll have to replace your wall. If its soft and feels like its going to fall apart... like wet wood then maybe... but as long as you keep an eye on it you should be fine.
mold pretty sucks yeah :-) nice work on the cleaning so far you should try to ventilate the room more and keep it dry. and you might wanna get the mold tested couse some of them can get you verry sick dont put just any cheamical on it please. ove worked with a painters buisness for 2 years and we also removed mold ect but you do need to know what it is
That looks like black mold... and that's not a good thing at all... I have it in my bathroom because the vent system in my apartment building sucks.... and bleach does NOT kill black mold. I haven't found anything that does. You more than likely will need to replace your wall. I def feel for ya.
it looks like dry rot which can happen when there is a lot of moisture. It starts off in a corner and then spreds out rapidly. You found it quick enough that you might be able to treat it. It rots wood. You're able to get cleaning solutions but you treated it before it could do more damage so just check anywere that you think moisture will be able to get to and when thats fixd it shudnt come back also try turn the heat up in that room to evaporate the moisture so that the mold has nowhere 2 go
Well.. I know this will probably make you feel worse... But my grandparents had black mold like that and they had to move out for a few days and hire a clean up crew, due to the mold being poisonous..
Idk, you really need to get a sample and send it to a poison lab. It could be dangerous. :S
look at the problem first. excess moisture. do you leave your house all closed up when you leave? how old is the roof, does it leak ? do you use swamp cooling or an AC?...when things are close to the walls is where you will see mold.curtains behind pictures, dressers. possibly try a dehumidifier in your house
ok so all u gta do is just buy a little dehumidifying unit, theyre cheap and completely freee staning and just put it on for a couple of hours a day and it'll absoorb the moisture, make sure ur opening ur windows to let in clean air too is imp:]
Get the monster steam cleaner :P lolz only because I'm watching that infomercial right now.
Orrrr you could go to some thrift store and see if they have an old dehumidifier. It will suck the moisture out of the air, you just have to dump the water when it's full.
My cousin had this problem, and my eyes would always be screwed up, and my breathing was messed up because of the mold too. So they cleaned everything with bleach, cleaned the carpets, and then got the dehumidifier. it worked.
I think just to be safe about it, you call in an expert person to check your wall. The bleach should have done it, but you may wanna make sure about the bathroom as well. Or if there is still some inside the wall to see if it'll come back.
some molds are toxic some are harmless..depends ob the molds..my grandma had this toxic mold in her house then she was moved out coz accdg to the people who got rid of the molds..it was a dangerous one coz those molds emitted toxics & it was a rare mold
Im poor too. I know what you mean. The only difference is that you are really good at cleaning. Im good at..... well... I'm not sure yet. but Ill find out soon!
Im a dancer. thats all I'm good at but i don't think it has anything to do with resolving physical issues.
Anyways I would dance for you if it would help with the mold problem... :S
:P Yeah, I'm thinking it has to do with the ventilation in our home... things should turn out alright --- we'll try to improve our air flow/moisture conditions.
I have this problem too but I rent privately and have a landlord. He said, and apparently he's owned many older homes with this problem, that bleach does the job. The mold will keep coming back, but you need to give that spot AIR! I saw you had black spores, they're harmful, my grandma was moved out of her home because of that kind of mold. If it comes back with avengence you can get someone in to come do a special mold treatment on your home, shouldn't be TOO costly. Hope this helps :)
mold starts growing indoors when the mold spores land on surfaces that are moist. so yes, it's because of moisture in your house. make sure that mold isn't growing somewhere else in your house, too because it can cause health problems. you don't need to replace your wall, but if there is still moisture behind there the mold could grow back, so check for a water problem. other than that i think you're good.

First of all, find out where the moisture is coming from. You shouldn't "fix" a problem that's just going to come back later. I'm with the "get a specialist" crowd.

i used to get a lot of mold on my bathroom ceiling because of the steam from the shower. we kept trying to clean it off, but it eventually it returned.
this summer we decided to re-paint and add a mold resistant to the paint when we mixed it.
or you can start off with a brand of paint meant for that like Perma-White or KILZ. i prefer KILZ, but i've heard both work well. whatever is at the home depot should do the trick.
we re-painted in august & i haven't seen mold since.
good luck!

go to a home improvement store.

You just need to scrub it once with a high performance multi purpose cleaner. My dad does it for people around the neighborhood. Make sure it has a high amount on ammonia and if you use it stay out of the room or area for atleast 2 to 3 hours.
oh yeah THAT SUUUUUUCKSSS MANNNNN

oh and i recommend if you dont like high powered products or cant afford them.

Good luck :D
ohmyfsm 2 years ago
If you don't mind a absolutely disgusting smell, you can also use butyric acid or lactic acid.
ohmyfsm 2 years ago
i would check outside to see if there are any areas where moisture can get in... otherwise I would call someplace and have the problem fixed before it get bad.

Also since you live where there is snow, you may have moister seeping throught the foundation. Which might require some digging and masonry sealing.

limitcorp103 2 years ago

Just make sure you fan it dry and get some fresh air in there occasionally.
evilsqurrel420 2 years ago
If you can, I'd suggest that you'd get someone in to inspect it, because it could be multiple things, and I'm not sure if it's the camera, but as many people spotted out, it looks black, which is toxic. So try to get an inspection done by a professional, because there's not much you can do to really see the underlying problem causing the mold.
LiveFreelyKJ 2 years ago

I have no clue about what you should do, but you may want to try to dehumidify that room to prevent moisture from spreading and creating more mold.

I don't think that you'll have to replace your wall. If its soft and feels like its going to fall apart... like wet wood then maybe... but as long as you keep an eye on it you should be fine.

mold pretty sucks yeah :-) nice work on the cleaning so far you should try to ventilate the room more and keep it dry. and you might wanna get the mold tested couse some of them can get you verry sick dont put just any cheamical on it please. ove worked with a painters buisness for 2 years and we also removed mold ect but you do need to know what it is
escafallen 2 years ago
That looks like black mold... and that's not a good thing at all... I have it in my bathroom because the vent system in my apartment building sucks.... and bleach does NOT kill black mold. I haven't found anything that does. You more than likely will need to replace your wall. I def feel for ya.

it looks like dry rot which can happen when there is a lot of moisture. It starts off in a corner and then spreds out rapidly. You found it quick enough that you might be able to treat it. It rots wood. You're able to get cleaning solutions but you treated it before it could do more damage so just check anywere that you think moisture will be able to get to and when thats fixd it shudnt come back also try turn the heat up in that room to evaporate the moisture so that the mold has nowhere 2 go
itschrishere 2 years ago
Well.. I know this will probably make you feel worse... But my grandparents had black mold like that and they had to move out for a few days and hire a clean up crew, due to the mold being poisonous..
Idk, you really need to get a sample and send it to a poison lab. It could be dangerous. :S
Either way, good luck with that.. :p

look at the problem first. excess moisture. do you leave your house all closed up when you leave? how old is the roof, does it leak ? do you use swamp cooling or an AC?...when things are close to the walls is where you will see mold.curtains behind pictures, dressers. possibly try a dehumidifier in your house

So they cleaned everything with bleach, cleaned the carpets, and then got the dehumidifier. it worked.
redflufflykins 2 years ago
I think just to be safe about it, you call in an expert person to check your wall. The bleach should have done it, but you may wanna make sure about the bathroom as well. Or if there is still some inside the wall to see if it'll come back.
NewRevanProductions 2 years ago
ok actualy nvm lol i spoke to early u said u already used it. . . sorry dude :S lol
xxXXLonelySoulXXxx 2 years ago
oh dude i have that all the time my self, what you do is.
1. take like bleach(if u wall is white it's 100% safe,if it has colours be very careful better use a strong arse soup)
2. it will take more then one attempet so after first time leave bleach/soup on the wall for around 10 min at the time.
3. Wash of the bleach/soup from wall if mold isnt gone apply it again and again till mold is gone.
if not get special liquid from local store, but before that try what i said, it worked for me.;)
xxXXLonelySoulXXxx 2 years ago
plus... isnt mold toxic or something
ireallyhatespiders 2 years ago
some molds are toxic some are harmless..depends ob the molds..my grandma had this toxic mold in her house then she was moved out coz accdg to the people who got rid of the molds..it was a dangerous one coz those molds emitted toxics & it was a rare mold

i had mold in my old apartment..... i ended up using bleach and it hasn't really been a problem.
mold is normal... usually you want to get it while its just starting out... but it sounds like you handled it right. just keep an eye on it.
JeramizzleJensen 2 years ago
:P Yeah, I'm thinking it has to do with the ventilation in our home... things should turn out alright --- we'll try to improve our air flow/moisture conditions.
OnisionArchive 2 years ago
I have this problem too but I rent privately and have a landlord. He said, and apparently he's owned many older homes with this problem, that bleach does the job. The mold will keep coming back, but you need to give that spot AIR! I saw you had black spores, they're harmful, my grandma was moved out of her home because of that kind of mold. If it comes back with avengence you can get someone in to come do a special mold treatment on your home, shouldn't be TOO costly. Hope this helps :)

I though mold emitted an odor :o
lunei66 2 years ago
nope..the odor that we think the molds emit are usually from the materials decaying when molds grew into it
brianne889 2 years ago
mold starts growing indoors when the mold spores land on surfaces that are moist. so yes, it's because of moisture in your house. make sure that mold isn't growing somewhere else in your house, too because it can cause health problems. you don't need to replace your wall, but if there is still moisture behind there the mold could grow back, so check for a water problem. other than that i think you're good.
hope i helped:)

So, if there was mold in my bathroom, it could find its' way to my bedroom (next door) ???
If so --- that really helps me as far as figuring the problem out, as I've had that issue with the bathroom too (due to the showers).
