Its simple, they were on a break. That is when you take time apart to see if you end up still having feelings for the other person. You explore your options, (like Ross did) and you decide what you really want. Ross decided he wanted Rachel back. A "break" is a temporary split. It may be temporary but its a split nonetheless.
