I am 32 years old and Ernie = Detroit Tigers...just watched him address the crowd at Comerica and I balled my eyes out. You will go down as a legend!!!
A fantastic voice! This lifelong Red Sox fan loves Ernie Harwell and his gift for bringing the game to life over the radio.
I use to listen to the greats on AM airwaves on clear spring/summer nights from hundreds of miles away. The nights I found Jack Buck in St. Louis or Ernie it Detroit were the really fun nights! My Dad and I would sit there and listen to a few innings. Great memories of childhood and my teen years. They don't make 'em like the great Ernie Harwell anymore.
I'm a diehard Yankees fan. I have known of Ernie Harwell for many years. He is in my mind the greatest broadcaster I have ever heard. Tigers fans were blessed to have this guy as your radio broadcaster for the better part of 4 decades. I remember pulling in 760 out of Detroit and having to fight with 770 here in New York to listen to Ernie Harwell. What a treat it was to listen to this man.
Omg I met him in lansing, our band played and he was there, I got his autograph, and i asked him if he would say something with meaning, and he said "that one was long gone!" awesome.
Growing up in Michigan and listening to Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey call the Tigers games on those long, hot, summer nights out on the back deck ... Wow! What memories! "He stood there like the house beside of the road and watched that one go by ..." PRICELESS!
Rest In Peace Ernie!! You will be missed

An icon of my youth...a great announcer & a great individual. They don't make them like this any more, unfortunately.

Ernie's voice is to baseball as a great musical score is to your favorite movie. Baseball is a great game, but Ernie makes it even greater still.
