@tinotrivino What is the difference between the english and german version, beside the language? I watched that movie as a kid on VHS in german and found it frightening.
Has the US version some cuts in it or even different scenes?
In Germany this movie was called JOEY and just today i found out the english title is MAKING CONTACT which sounds a bit silly to me, in retrospect!
Well, i'd have to say that Fletcher is creepier because he's possessed by a spirit whereas Fats was only being controlled by a crazy man. Fletcher and the creepy clown doll from Poltergeist probably were inspired by the Dead of Night dummy. I remember seeing Poltergeist 2 in the theater as well and i remember being kind of freaked out by the vomit creature. lol.
@Johnlindsey289 Yeah, i know, but who knows what that was really all about, right? Magic is a very dark and unusual psychological thriller that kind of messes with your head a little.
It seems four early 80's but unique fantasy epics like Brazil, this movie, Legend and Nausicaa were butchered here in the US but luckily got their better cuts. Both this movie and Nausicaa (Under the Warriors of the Wind) title were released in 1985/1986 from New World Pictures in theaters, ah good old New World is what horror/sci-fi/fantasy/action studio that any 80's kid would never forget.
@Johnlindsey289 Yeah, although i still quite like the U.S. cut of this film actually. New World released a lot of really great movies that i grew up watching as a kid.
Yeah, Fletcher does kind of look like Tyrell. lol. My big brother and i both saw Transformers at the theater that summer, as i recall, and i went to see Great Mouse Detective with my younger cousin that summer too. Rattigan is my second favorite Disney villain second only to McLeach from Rescuers Down Under. I've seen Dead of Night, by the way, and i thought it was pretty cool.
Mcleach, Ratigan, Horned King, Maleficent, Jafar, Sykes, Captain Hook, Scar, Shan-Yu, Cruella Deville, Ursula, Wicked Queen and Shere-Khan are great Disney villains. Who's more creepier? Fats or Fletcher? do you think Dead of Night influenced this movie as well as Poltergeist? this also came out in the same summer of Poltergeist 2.
@ExtremeBogom Those were the days, weren't they? I remember my parents taking me to see this when it was in theaters and i remember hiding my eyes through a lot of it because that evil looking dummy Fletcher scared the crap out of me. I had a very similar experience just a couple of years previous when they took me to see Strange Invaders, which had a lot of creepy shit in it as well. The 80's rocked and so did my parents for letting me and my siblings see such awesomeness at such a young age.
I was 6 years old the next year after this hit theaters when i rented it on video and BOY it scared the hell out of me. Did Fats also scared you as a kid too? i was 5 when me and my family moved to St. Louis in May of 1986 and one of the first movies we rented was Magic when we moved in our new house, it scared the bejesus out me. Do you think the score in the U.S. cut sounded like the Great Mouse Detective's score?
@Johnlindsey289 Yeah, i saw Magic on cable at a very young age and Fats nearly traumatized me. lol. The music in this movie reminds me of a lot of other scores, and Great Mouse Detective is surely one of them.
Well GMD and MC came out at the same summer you know since GMD came out July and MC came out the last day of August that year in 86. Fletcher looks like Tyrell from Blade Runner, Did you also saw Transformers the Movie in theaters that August as well? the German cut has a more original score since it sounds like Tangerine Dreams at times. This movie is one of the closet movies of being like Akira in live-action you gotta admit. Check out Dead of Night 1945 for another similar movie.
I never knew until recently that this movie was directed by Roland Emmerich, the same guy who directed Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012.
I have the movie here on youtube with heavily cut/altered US dubbed version Making Contact and Uncut extended subtitled German version Joey. Check it out on my Account.
Hey everyone, i just uploaded the first part of the U.S. version and will upload the rest later and soon will upload the full uncut German language with subs version.
I own this movie on DVD in it's 2 disc special edition and that dummy still gives me the creeps. Has anyone seen the movie "Magic"? now that dummy is almost as scary as the one from this movie.
No shit pal, do you remember "Magic"? now that dummy was scary as hell. And does anyone remember "Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night"? that also scared me shitless and it's here on Youtube.
Well another evil ventriloquist dummy movie scared me when i was little back in the 80's, it's called "Magic" and had Anthony Hopkins in it. I was 4 back in 1986 when my family rented that movie and that scared me shitless.
This flick scared the daylights out of me as a kid!!..

So ich schätze das die amerikanische version hat jede Menge Cuts und verschiedene Szenen oder ein völlig anderes Ende.
Das ist dann wahrscheinlich der Grund weil die Produzenten einen total anderen Titel gewählt haben.
