I doubt this was the legendary TOPT Cope was allegedly spaced. Balfe was apparently playing pretend trumpet too but he is not there in this either. Myth and legend....... Still TTE were the nuts!
...celebrate the great escape..carry my soul away.. from sufferance intolerance..leaving you today.. sung by a man in leather jodpurs. Brilliant, Julian Cope was the greatest.
@c8udyp Are you joking or is that really him? Ha ha! You must be serious, because several weeks ago Emett Chapman had a press conference revealing the production and eventual sales of the Chaphorn, a wind instrument that you play by tapping it. It's not a trumpet, or any other known wind instrument, but it can sound like a trumpet because of its ten mouthpieces, each of which funnels into the same brass tubing. There are several YouTube videos showing none other than Tony Levin playing it!
My friend died exactly when this was released (Sept 81) , so it's always had a deep emotional linkage for me. So glad Cope was there as an outsider to the whole Electro/Romantic movement............although his "band" clearly didn't get it in any way shape or form judging by their crap dress sense. Great song
julian got on the number 14 bus i was travelling on in norris green in liverpool when the band were at height of their fame in 1980s...was so weird..all the oldies on the bus had no idea who he was..lmao.
@scrambang Yes, "Treason" is a stroke of genius. I'm not a fan of "Reward" myself, though that seems to be one of their bigger hits. However, I do recommend "Tiny Children" and "When I Dream."
According to his biography, Julian was so high when he did this he nearly fell off the piano and when it got to half way through where the first bit comes in again, he thought it was the start. And that orange top is apparently an adapted pillow-case which he stole from a hotel. Strange man...
Great song, and a lovely man too, and who else could get away with a chorus, that a tuneful sheep could sing? In fact he's quite fond of sticking a few discrete "Baa ba ba ba bahs" into his songs, Gotta love that man!
seen them in dundee early 80`s great gig . went to see julian cope in edinburgh 7/8 years ago. a night with julian cope it was the worst gig ever. he sang and in between songs he would do this poetry. i left after 45mins . the fans were leaving in there droves. great band great singer shit poet .thanks for posting video.
Cope hated totp...the TEXP were fantastic, ive still got all the singles from TEAR 1 TO TEAR 88...plus the original kilimanjaro, before the zebra cover re-issue...anyone else have that?...never seen another copy since 1982!!
Me too. Worst photograph on an album cover EVER. The 80s hairdo's on this TOTP clip are beyond fabulous. Can't decide which is worse, Julian's or Gary'!
I saw Ian McCulluck about 5 years ago, and I always thought he was too up himself, so I asked him for his autograph, and while he was writing it, I said, (to wind him up tho,) Yeah, can you just write, to Paul, from Julian, and he looked at me and stopped writing, and said, "who the fuck do you think I am?" so I said Julian Cope, innit? and he done a right flouncy little hissy fit, and went off, all sulky, and I laughed fuckin tits off, my tits off! But it was funny!
Gotta love Julian Cope though, intya? funny, I wasn't that into Teardrops at the time, 'cos it was a bit Gay, wuddn't it, but I got right into JC with Fried, and I love it, Autogedden, all of the early Teardrop stuff, that was some of the most perfect pop ever written. And what a Fahckin' Hippy that Nu-Rom Pop boy turned into! Right when it wasn't that cool to be a Hippy, too. Gotta admire the blokes Charisma though. So laid back, he's limbo!
It didn't lighten mine but I put the matches away .;) The uplifting singles from Teardrop Explodes fell into the gloom of 82.
Pity that TE did not stay together for a year or two more , I think the UK music scene would have been better for it.
Dont believe the 'lsd' story Copey watches for the cameras moving and lipsyncs perfectly. if i'd been trippin the lights and the audience would have been a big distraction
A great driving pop outfit! What a shame Julian's ego made him decide the band had run its course and a solo career beckoned and then progressively waned albeit with the odd diamond. The guitarist Troy Tate just hung up his guitar after that; another great pity
True, much of what's current is excruciating too. The Times had a thing on great TOTP moments, in it Julian Cope talks about taking LSD before the show, and having a real hard "performing".
With the benefit of hindsight its easy to disregard
the eighties, yeah it was a bit cheesy, but I would gladly swap the bands from the eighties for a lot of these no hopers we have now. Incidentally why do you think Cope is on acid here?.
In his autobiography, Copey talks looking round the stage, feeling dislliusioned and.."Alfie (the bass player) started up his 'new-wave' dance and I just wanted to twat him". Great song though. Isn't it about Cope's 'liaison' with Ian McCulloch's sister? I'm going to put 'Wilder' on again now.
all i meant was...he is not attractive...one of those artists who should be seen and not heard...don't care if he is gay or not...never understood why people found him good looking....he actually creeps me out to be perfectly honest.
A lot of women out there will see someone who's famous and big, and then suddenly start going off about how attractive they are. Not all, but it's out there quite a bit.
I always heard from a lot of people that it doesn't matter how fat or ugly you are, they will still fuck you. Could be wrong, but I dunno.
I get what you are saying...to those women "size" matters...the "size" of the wallet! and i meant to say Copey should be "heard" and not "seen" instead of the other way around....my fingers cannot keep up with my brain.
Sure, I agree. I love his music, he could be a 3 headed monster and still would The Bard to me. Really, even his recent stuff is amazing, and it's been a while since Fried... Anyone hear "Soon to Forget Ya"?
How many of the Teardrop's tunes have you posted this comment on? I've seen it on at least three. I'm not going to give you the 'thumbs down' bollocks because I think it's true. They did some good tunes, I'm fairly nuetral and they were a bit poncy.
While Julian Cope has made dozens of solo albums, so good, some not so good, to the best of my knowledge The Teardop Explodes only made 2 albums. "Killimanjaro" and "Wilder".
I first saw this when I first moved to England in 1981. This was the first of many "is this a great country or what?" moments. Well, aside from the bass player dressed like a member of Classix Nouveau. It was the 80's after all...

This is the totp described in Head On - you'll see that he's standing on a piano at the end of the clip and he's also wearing the orange pillow case nicked from the hotel ....
Isn't this the Top Of The Pops performance where he's actually tripping and in the biography "Head On" describes his struggle to cope with the situation? Didn't look like he had too much of a problem...
