  • So many negative comments here 8-(

  • @lewisner Check my channel. I was a major Adam Ant fan autumn '81 and these guys caught my attention : ) I HATED Prince Charming lol

  • I doubt this was the legendary TOPT Cope was allegedly spaced. Balfe was apparently playing pretend trumpet too but he is not there in this either. Myth and legend....... Still TTE were the nuts!

  • Cope was apparently tripping off his tits during this.

  • Great music but they didnt half look a bunch of tits :)

  • I'm really not interested in these riots, I am however still very much interested in the teardrop explodes

  • I brought this on a bent piece of seven inch plastic. One of the best seven inches I ever had.

  • superb

  • saw Julian Cope in L.A. in 1986 - awesome.

  • ...celebrate the great escape..carry my soul away.. from sufferance intolerance..leaving you today.. sung by a man in leather jodpurs. Brilliant, Julian Cope was the greatest.

  • And on trumpet, Mr. Tony Levin

  • @c8udyp Are you joking or is that really him? Ha ha! You must be serious, because several weeks ago Emett Chapman had a press conference revealing the production and eventual sales of the Chaphorn, a wind instrument that you play by tapping it. It's not a trumpet, or any other known wind instrument, but it can sound like a trumpet because of its ten mouthpieces, each of which funnels into the same brass tubing. There are several YouTube videos showing none other than Tony Levin playing it!

  • @selffamily1 Ha! I was totally joking but based on your comment I'm starting to wonder if that really IS him...

  • I bought Wilder before the first record, and became a Cope fanatic when he went solo. This is my favourite TE classic!

  • omg - remember hanging out in Erics -Teardrop, Mighty wah, Echo and the bunnymen - good times!!!

  • @31danique I envy you. That is my favourite musical time and place. Would have given anything to have been in Liverpool at that time.

  • St bloody Julian nicked my beer at a party in liverpool in 81, bastard..still I forgive you for some fine tunes.

  • ah the summer of 81 the summer of RIOTS

  • I've got that version, as well somewhere, lewisner, I'll have to dig it out.

  • I recorded (on cassette) Julian singing this live acoustic on Radio 1 about 13 years ago.Amazing, far better than the recording.

  • My friend died exactly when this was released (Sept 81) , so it's always had a deep emotional linkage for me. So glad Cope was there as an outsider to the whole Electro/Romantic movement............although his "band" clearly didn't get it in any way shape or form judging by their crap dress sense. Great song

  • Was this the infamous time when he was having one of his many acid trips?

  • julian got on the number 14 bus i was travelling on in norris green in liverpool when the band were at height of their fame in 1980s...was so weird..all the oldies on the bus had no idea who he was..lmao.

  • The bass player looks like a complete cunt.

  • oh and Fischer z(yuck!) also lol

  • @ duxame...just an opinion. Aren't we here to give opinions?

File this with overrated stuff such as: Orange Juice,The Smiths, Section 25 and Birthday Party

  • @scrambang NO WE AE NOT

  • @kosmischesynth ..did these guys tour with Hall n Oats once ? :-P

  • having a rough time with this band. only song that's grabbed me is "Treason".

i'm gonna say this band was a bit overrated, sorry!

  • @scrambang

Oh, we were all so eagerly awaiting your judgement. So now we know.

  • @scrambang Yes, "Treason" is a stroke of genius. I'm not a fan of "Reward" myself, though that seems to be one of their bigger hits. However, I do recommend "Tiny Children" and "When I Dream."

  • A great song - and yes, that bassist clearly thought he was in a diiferent band.

  • Maybe he thought it was a Duran Duran audition

  • According to his biography, Julian was so high when he did this he nearly fell off the piano and when it got to half way through where the first bit comes in again, he thought it was the start. And that orange top is apparently an adapted pillow-case which he stole from a hotel. Strange man...

  • @kosmischesynth I'm looking at his eyes right now, at around one minute into the video, and he *does* look high...

  • Great song, and a lovely man too, and who else could get away with a chorus, that a tuneful sheep could sing? In fact he's quite fond of sticking a few discrete "Baa ba ba ba bahs" into his songs, Gotta love that man!

  • One of the best singers ever...and most underrated. His newest Black Sheep is a startling, surprising return to form and his best in almost 20 years.

  • unique song writing talent and excellent lyrics.

  • Hehe, one of Courtney Love's favorite songs. Would you believe that? Teardrop is so much better.

  • Courtney hung out with the Teardrops...in his book Head-On when he speaks of the character 'The Adolescent', well, that's her.

  • Teardrop Explodes were such a great group and good to see in concert.

Julian Cope is such a brilliant and very under-rated singer.

  • I loved the Teardrop Explodes and that still must be the best name for a band ever!

    Julian Cope - legend!

  • mike halloran where are you? radios in motion

  • @ikswona You want to know where he is? San Diego. You from Detroit?

  • @Stellamust

Sorry for the delay in responding. Does he have a radio show? I am from Detroit. Have family in San Diego. Thanks for the response.

  • @ikswona Halloran had many different radio shows in SD. Fired in January from latest one - 94.9. What made you ask about him on this thread?

  • seen them in dundee early 80`s great gig . went to see julian cope in edinburgh 7/8 years ago. a night with julian cope it was the worst gig ever. he sang and in between songs he would do this poetry. i left after 45mins . the fans were leaving in there droves. great band great singer shit poet .thanks for posting video.

  • Never heard this song before. Quite catchy. Why does it make me think of Wombles....

  • Freaky great song but what an abomination of a show!!! Har!

  • I'm sure I was on holiday when this was a hit . Driving around and hearing this and OMDs Souvenir and Tainted Love on the radio all the time too.

  • The Laughing Boy.

  • Cope hated totp...the TEXP were fantastic, ive still got all the singles from TEAR 1 TO TEAR 88...plus the original kilimanjaro, before the zebra cover re-issue...anyone else have that?...never seen another copy since 1982!!

  • LOL...I've got one !!

  • Hang on to it Carlos!!! it could fetch millions... hha!!

  • Me too. Worst photograph on an album cover EVER. The 80s hairdo's on this TOTP clip are beyond fabulous. Can't decide which is worse, Julian's or Gary'!

  • My life see`s me wandering

    Lost in smiles forever

Erase my mind see what I find

    Axes dream together

  • i love the way he mugs for the camera!

  • September/ October 1981...

  • I saw Ian McCulluck about 5 years ago, and I always thought he was too up himself, so I asked him for his autograph, and while he was writing it, I said, (to wind him up tho,) Yeah, can you just write, to Paul, from Julian, and he looked at me and stopped writing, and said, "who the fuck do you think I am?" so I said Julian Cope, innit? and he done a right flouncy little hissy fit, and went off, all sulky, and I laughed fuckin tits off, my tits off! But it was funny!

  • Gotta love Julian Cope though, intya? funny, I wasn't that into Teardrops at the time, 'cos it was a bit Gay, wuddn't it, but I got right into JC with Fried, and I love it, Autogedden, all of the early Teardrop stuff, that was some of the most perfect pop ever written. And what a Fahckin' Hippy that Nu-Rom Pop boy turned into! Right when it wasn't that cool to be a Hippy, too. Gotta admire the blokes Charisma though. So laid back, he's limbo!

  • you just can't stop singing in with that chorus - it could lighten the mood of an arsonist

  • It didn't lighten mine but I put the matches away .;) The uplifting singles from Teardrop Explodes fell into the gloom of 82.

Pity that TE did not stay together for a year or two more , I think the UK music scene would have been better for it.

Dont believe the 'lsd' story Copey watches for the cameras moving and lipsyncs perfectly. if i'd been trippin the lights and the audience would have been a big distraction

    :-D

  • A great driving pop outfit! What a shame Julian's ego made him decide the band had run its course and a solo career beckoned and then progressively waned albeit with the odd diamond. The guitarist Troy Tate just hung up his guitar after that; another great pity

  • Well i, for one, loved the eighties, though the hair is painful to look at now. (laughing)

Seeing these old videos of Julian's has released a flood of memories...

    And they're all good!

  • ALSO - only in the 80s would you have a bass player moving around in such a stupidly absurd way.

  • True, much of what's current is excruciating too. The Times had a thing on great TOTP moments, in it Julian Cope talks about taking LSD before the show, and having a real hard "performing".

  • Excruciatingly 80s viewing, despite the singer being high on acid.

  • With the benefit of hindsight its easy to disregard

the eighties, yeah it was a bit cheesy, but I would gladly swap the bands from the eighties for a lot of these no hopers we have now. Incidentally why do you think Cope is on acid here?.

  • every day that passes in what passes for pop music today redeems the 80s just a bit more.

Nobody knows how to make "pop" without looking like they're trying too hard or just looking embarrassed.

  • Who? Dorian "gay"? You Copey cats.

  • Ba baba ba baah, bababaah ba ba ba baa ba ba

what an eloquent summing up of the 80's

the seeds of a Hippy, about to burst out! priceless!

  • so, you haven't heard Black Sheep yet. No it is not Balsac.

  • I wish Copey hadn't stopped playing bass at this point. The teardrops stopped being cool the second he handed it to that arse in the white shirt!

  • wonderful

  • I LOVE the Teardrop Explodes. This is one of my favorite songs.

  • Please post "Colours Fly Away",this was a gem of a song that got through the net in '81.All we get is "Reward" over again!!!!

  • I recorded Julian Cope singing this live acoustic on Radio One and his voice is so perfect it sends shivers up my spine

  • wow these guys are pretty awsome, im now happy im getting guitar lessons from their guitarist

  • In his autobiography, Copey talks looking round the stage, feeling dislliusioned and.."Alfie (the bass player) started up his 'new-wave' dance and I just wanted to twat him". Great song though. Isn't it about Cope's 'liaison' with Ian McCulloch's sister? I'm going to put 'Wilder' on again now.

  • i always got the vibe that Cope was gay...I wouldn't have given him the time of day. Now, Ian...that is another story.

  • Julian, gay?

    I'd ask Dorian.

Erm, anyway this is supposed to be about the music...

  • all i meant was...he is not attractive...one of those artists who should be seen and not heard...don't care if he is gay or not...never understood why people found him good looking....he actually creeps me out to be perfectly honest.

  • A lot of women out there will see someone who's famous and big, and then suddenly start going off about how attractive they are. Not all, but it's out there quite a bit.

I always heard from a lot of people that it doesn't matter how fat or ugly you are, they will still fuck you. Could be wrong, but I dunno.

  • I get what you are saying...to those women "size" matters...the "size" of the wallet! and i meant to say Copey should be "heard" and not "seen" instead of the other way around....my fingers cannot keep up with my brain.

  • Sure, I agree. I love his music, he could be a 3 headed monster and still would The Bard to me. Really, even his recent stuff is amazing, and it's been a while since Fried... Anyone hear "Soon to Forget Ya"?

  • "Fetching up like some blue-eyed Johnny Depp" ;)

(just enough behind the cultural beat to not sound crass. Maybe close brackets

  • which guitarist?

  • Troy Tate dressed like Doctor Who. Bass Player dancing like Andy McClusky, the Teardrop dream was coming to it's too rapid end.

I loved their music wholeheartedly - oh to be 16 again !

  • tart 6th form band

  • How many of the Teardrop's tunes have you posted this comment on? I've seen it on at least three. I'm not going to give you the 'thumbs down' bollocks because I think it's true. They did some good tunes, I'm fairly nuetral and they were a bit poncy.

  • What does "tart 6th form band" mean ?

  • ...'Wilder' is a rilly bitchin' Psychedelic Pop album...

...& JC telling about this scene here in his book is rilly funny - !...

  • You know whats "rilly" funny....your grammar.

  • this is soooooo 1981.

  • someone needs to change julian's droopy drawers

  • STILL no one posts the fantastic COLOURS FLY AWAY!!!!

  • My favorite song from the Wilder album. That and ...and the Fighting Takes Over.

    -MINESWEEP

  • Does anybody have Colours Fly Away on vid?

  • this was a great music form the early 1980's how many albums did he make? i nknow he west solo for a while

  • While Julian Cope has made dozens of solo albums, so good, some not so good, to the best of my knowledge The Teardop Explodes only made 2 albums. "Killimanjaro" and "Wilder".

  • bushmustdie2 - The Teardrops also had a posthumous album of previously unreleased songs called "Everybody wants to shag...The Teardrop Explodes".

(No, I'm not making that title up!)

  • Oh yeah....Everybody Wants To Shag The Teardrop Explodes! I'd forgotten about that one. Apparently that was the working title for their debut album.

  • our lisa loves this un

  • I first saw this when I first moved to England in 1981. This was the first of many "is this a great country or what?" moments. Well, aside from the bass player dressed like a member of Classix Nouveau. It was the 80's after all...

And how about Julian Cope's amazing resemblance to his idol Scott Walker?

    Great!

  • wonder if there are any other performances of songs off the 'Wilder' album, lots of stuff from 'Kilimanjaro'

  • at first i thought it was jim carey parodying a rock star

  • I just discovered this band. How comes I missed them ? They were a piece missing in my huge music collection !!!

  • I got into the Teardrops late, through being a fan of Julian Cope's late-80s solo work. So I missed this on TOTP first time round. Very funny. Troy looks great ... I met him years after the Teardrops, he was working at York's Theatre Royal, lovely guy.

  • Great Video. Gifted band. My religious upbringing evolved from TE.

  • any attempt at musical psychedelia in the early 80s was very bold, only the Teardrops and the Psychedelic Furs had the guts to wade in

  • Great song!

  • Oooooh, the memories. And oooooooooh dear, the haircuts! Thanks for lovely clip!

  • wtf is the guy with the blue guiter doing ..lol

    Great Song !

  • It looks like he is a Wham/George Michael wannabe.

  • Yeah, considering this was way before wham

  • OK, so I'm off by about 3 years. You weren't supposed to take it literally. It was the spirit of the joke. Good sarcasm though.:-{D=

  • Yes, I should know better than sarcasm ;)

  • Good sarcasm on YOUR comment. Just thought that I needed to clarify.:-{D=

  • nice troosers

  • Nice LEATHER troosers!

  • This is the totp described in Head On - you'll see that he's standing on a piano at the end of the clip and he's also wearing the orange pillow case nicked from the hotel ....

    craig xxx

  • yeah and he's full of acid and out of his mind....great book.

  • could be! He does look a bit too "together" here, doesn't he? And the performance in question went out live.

  • I'm sure the noncy looking band bacame modern romance ???

  • God! The tune's great... but the look is even worse than Simple Minds... a sort of down-market Bowie!

Better to stick to my L.P.s and forget the video...

  • Isn't this the Top Of The Pops performance where he's actually tripping and in the biography "Head On" describes his struggle to cope with the situation? Didn't look like he had too much of a problem...

  • The guitarists' early '80's dancing = classic

  • nice one

    Dave.

  • This is fantastic! I love the Teardrop, and what a great tune! We want more! (well, if you've got it). Cheers!

  • i like your video its cool!! check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocuv3wkUIVY if you like it please comment and rate!
