Watched this again just recently -- still incredibly enjoyable. I wish they hadn't changed the title, though -- "Syntax Era" is genius, whereas "Micro Men" is a bit dull.
a brilliant program from the beeb took me back to a time of manic miner ,jet set willy etc we truly were world beaters then - shame its all gone pete tong !!
@GuruMediator Truth. I, as a non British citizen, enjoyed Micro Men a lot and i´m generally positive suprised about the quality of the BBC programme, compared to our public service broadcaster.
About Micro Men: Yes, every company needs a visionary, but they also can destroy a lot, because they see no limitations in any case and thats not a rational thinking.
If you or someone you know can download torrents, you can get a copy that way. That's how I managed to watch it as I missed the original broadcast too.
Agreed! One of the best things the BBC has shown this year and one of their best programmes in a long long time - well overdue but really well made :)
Now if only they'd produce one about Commodore and Atari and their battle over the Amiga...
I had a good look for it too... its JM Jarre's Oxygene part IV . It was also used (a simplified version) as soundtrack to an 80s game, anyone recall which one it was??
This was an excellent programme but the actor despite the voice looks nothing like Sinclair. Can anyone tell me what the synth music is at the end as Sinclair is driving along in his C5 beng passed by Apple and Microsoft trucks: well known but can't think of where it is from.
It's reassuring to note that at least some of licence payers money has not been wasted on cookery, antique and restoration ventures. There were some fine performances here, notably from the central characters. One of the main narrative threads was Sinclair's obsession with style over performance - ironic given his own somewhat strange appearance. Also, despite the advances in special effects, the hair and make up department still fail to convincingly reproduce male pattern baldness!
I wouldn't have called it a "comedy" except maybe in the French use of the word. Drama/documentary would be more accurate. Halcyon days of the British Computer Industry. Great stuff.
About an hour in there was a tune called Zoolookologie by Jean Michel Jarre. Not long after there was 'two tribes' by frankie goes to hollywood. There was some kraftwerk in there too.
I think I still have Spectrum 48k somewhere. Manic Miner, Horace and Jet Pac etc. Geniuses before their time. Typically British though. Come up with a great idea like the Home Computer or the Jet Engine. Have a second thought about it then think it's too expensive and then give to Japan or the USA for nothing, Sheesh !!
I loved all those games, classics! The people behind Jet Pac went on to found the Nintendo label Rare (who did Donkey Kong Country among other stuff)... Read Rogue Nation by Vernon Coleman: it explains that the Jet Engine patent was handed over to the US in order to get loans to buy weapons to fight Hilter...
Can anyone link to a soundtrack for this?

Quality programme by the BBC!
I love mostly all of the early Micro`s but the Commodore machines will always have a special place in my heart:)
Just made a Remix tribute if folks are interested.

Where once Britain had men like Sinclair and Curry, it now has corrupt, greedy bankers and pea-brained celebs who make nothing.of any value.

I've watched this film about 5 times now, it's quite possibly the best thing that was on tv in 2009. Absolute magic.

fantastic prog, thought it was gonna be some quirky nerdy show, but it was great! The charactors gave it a superb comedy edge.

It's a lie. This is not any Chris Curry but it's Artur Dent. I can recognize him. He wasn't involved in Acorn but in Earth's destruction.

Good shout. In general, there are no BBC programmes about computing for adults these days, let alone dramas.
Sir Clive is an icon - and I'm sure a drama about the C5 is do-able. And also his earlier products and disasters.
