A new piece of DNA was not created, but changes in the existing DNA allowed it to fill a niche and eat the new thing it it's environment.
It's very hard to simulate natural selection. This is because when you "simulate" it, it's no longer "natural", but rather "artificial".
My conclusion is based on the theory that organisms adapt over successive generations to better survive in their environment.
Maybe you should ask a virologist how valid evolutionary adaptation is.
