25 odd years later and there STILL hasnt been a better fighter plane movie made. I know it's really fucking cheesey and at times vaguely homoerotic but i gotta say, every time i watch this movie the 9 yr old in me comes out again and i wanna be a fighter pilot. It's definatly a classic with some great fighter scenes. (even if they use a few more than once lol)

Top Gun is over-rated, there are so many things wrong with this movie (A-4s are NOT faster than F-14s, despite what the narration says here, and you can't ignore orders and do a flyby when told 'negative the pattern is full' and just get off with a slap on the wrist) The Final Countdown (even taking into account they travel back in time) is more realistic and better than Top Gun.

Having served in the Navy, I could tell you first hand that The Final Countdown was a lot more realistic than Top Gun. The F-14 was one of the first jets to have computer-aided controls. In the beginning, the wings were more manually adjusted. Later, a better computer automatically adjusted the wing's angle. I believe the F-14's glove vanes are manually extended or retracted.

The F-14s VG wings were always full automatic, the flight control system and the airspeed data automatically determined the best wing sweep angle for the give flight profile. The pilot can always manually override the system incase of a failure. On the ground the control of the wing angle is fully manual by the pilot, there is even an over swept position for when the aircraft is parked up to save space. The glove vanes were fully automatic, but were deleted on later F-14s.

@pacometaco22 Actually the A-4's used by NWFS had engine upgrades which gave them a higher thrust to weight ratio. For example, A-4's equipped as such could accelerate while climbing; the F-14 couldn't. This can be a critical factor in ACM because higher thrust/weight ratio gives more maneuverability.

The aerially photography was awesome, but if you know ANYTHING about these fighters, or air tactics, it's kinda dumb:) A hard deck is THE GROUND. When Jester went below it, Maverick had already won. His defense? He only burrowed his jet through the earth for a few seconds to kill someone who already died. Also, the speed brakes pop trick ruined that F-14, forever. At least according to the guy who tried to save it in the shop. Plus the gay volleyball scene was way weird too...

I saw this when it first came out while I stationed in Augsburg Germany. Me and a friend were on a run down in Berchsgarden drinking Czechoslovakian budwieser. This film was a great boost to moral at a time when we in the armed forces where in peaceful times. The wall in Germany had not come down yet and the threat of the cold war was still eminent. And again, if you know you are going to flyby the tower, and its nearly certain (both requests in movie rejected, described as circuis stunt, and its obviously fruitless and dangerous) your request is going to be rejected, don't ask. If you do, you will get in trouble for both the flyby and disobeying an order. So take your "IS THAT SIMPLE EMOUGH???" and shove it up your ass.
