The US Army apposed the bombing, Harry Truman had the last call. International Peoples' Tribunal on the Dropping of Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki stating that: "The Tribunal finds that the nature of damage caused by the atomic bombs can be described as indiscriminative extermination of all life forms or inflicting unnecessary pain to the survivors". That was in 2007 In 1967, Noam Chomsky described the atomic bombings as "among the most unspeakable crimes in history"

Close your eyes and go back in time 65 years! You would have had NO idea what an atomic bomb was! All you had to go by was your radio and the letters from family fighting the war. Japan did not declare war on the United States. We were attacked at Pearl Harbor while people slept. 200,000 Americans died during WWII and you just wanted it to end. Nobody would have cared by what means it took, we just wanted it over. Japanese are great people , but at that time we just wanted the war over.

@Reephamike The plain truth is that the Japanese engaged in 'total war.' Technically, the Japanese did not bring the bomb upon themselves, but practically they did. The Japanese had put into place a National Mobilization Law which effectively brought 28 million civilians into the sphere of Japanese homeland defense. These civilians would have fought no matter what, and the bomb saved both their lives and American lives too. Don't be black and white; war is hell.

"War is hell" that is absolutely true. whether the bomb was last resort or not, killing civilians is murder, if it has to be done then you should do it with guilt, not pride. Don't give all the "We brought peace freedom and democracy" because those people and children are nothing more than dust and atoms in the wake of a horrific catastrophe. He told the story about the Prince being told to do his duty and end up becoming the destroyer of worlds. I think Uppenherimer ever foresaw how the atomic bomb was going to be used or become when the world came close to nuclear war. He never would have helped develop it. I think what he wants is people to forgive him, I certainly do he deserves it.

We didn't drop on Japan because of Pearl Harbor. We dropped on Japan because Germany had already surrendered; furthermore, the US didn't see Japan as the foremost threat. Instead, about 3/4 of our supplies and men were sent to the European theater of the war, not the Pacific.

Also, you have other factual errors.

-Oppenheimer was only awarded the Fermi award years later, after he was stripped of his security clearance for showing signs of Communist sympathizing.

American scientists did not originate the atomic bomb technology. German scientists developed the technology and tested the effects in January of 1945. Hitler decided that the weapon would tarnish his legacy so the project was abandoned. When the USA fell upon Germany they discovered the atomic facilities and gave the German scientists lucrative contracts to build them the atom bombs which were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hitler never would have dropped atomic bombs on human beings.
