i still remember jarre's acceptance speech for the academy award for this score - he expressed how thankful he was that mozart was not eligible for scoring the film amadeus.
Just bought the BD! Great picture for an even greater film. Some said it's boring but I loved it all the way to the end. Mr Lean is one of the greats of cinem! Can't wait for "Lawrence" to come out on BD!
A Passage to India is a 1984 British/American drama film written and directed by David Lean. The screenplay is based on the 1924 novel of the same title by E.M. Forster and the 1960 play by Santha Rama Rau that was inspired by the novel.
I do agree..leave it to DAVID LEAN he was a master in turning into beautiful cinematic images novels such as this one..one of my favorites, even though he is best remembered for LAWRENCE or ZHIVAGO.On the light side, another LEAN's favorite of mine is SUMMERTIME.Talk about the blossoming of a spinster into a woman in love. One can read the radiance all over HEPBURN's face. And that fade out on the slipper:priceless and above all classy! One knew what was happening without today's gratuitous nudity!
I can't think how that novel (which I know intimately, having taught the bloody thing for five years on the trot a decade ago) could have been turned into a film in any way other than Lean's cinematic feast.
Talk about definitive. Then talk about improving on the novel's perfection! (Well, it almost does that :)

Judy Davis should have won the Oscar for her Adela. Thoroughly astonishing.
