@cmsahe They are real, the Indefatigable is actually the Grand Turk which is a modern replica of a sixth-rate frigate, HMS Blandford, from 1741. A Baltic schooner was used to represent all of the smaller vessels. 11 scale models were used for battle scenes, with working rigging and cannons fired by remote control.
I just noticed that Pellew doesn't have epaulets on his coat. I thought that as presumably a post captain for more than a year, he would have two. I'm confused.
@Madeleinewith3Es Officers rarely wore their "full" uniform unless it was a formal occasion. Welcoming some new recruits to a frigate wouldn't be considered such an occasion - so his "good uniform" with epaulets was mostly stored in his cabin ready for the Admiralty dinners.
@5:08 glowering Horatio and grinning Archie. @5:17 Horatio has a half smile and Archie is making me smile now. I love this scene. This is what we lost when Archie died; the sweet, emotional best friend who kept Hornblower acting human.
Clayton at least has stopped being afraid of their enemy and he teaches Horatio that a man needs to step up as a man to evil. His memory will never be forgotten by all who knew him as an honorable man who stood up to evil. Better that than had he been a coward all his life. Clayton at least made Horatio a better man./Keen is an honest man and he sees something in Horatio and wants the best for him. And he gave him over to a man that looks into a man and one that doesn't prejudge.
The old adversary may wear a new face, but whatever mask he chooses too hide behind, a Frenchman is still a Frenchman and we will beat him as we always have beaten him! For there is no power on earth that can withstand the might of the British Navy!
Well, Captain Pellew can't very well say "Our Navy is pretty damned tough, despite certain obstacles that cannot be overcome!" or "The Royal Navy is completely inadequate for the task at hand!" Can he?
Funny thing, that. Simpson ad Clayton both fall in the duel, everyone rushes to Simpson. Clayton lays dying in a room upstairs with three men, Simpson has a shoulder wound and is surrounded by a whole room of sympathizers. How unjust.
Besides Hornblower, Pelew is the greatest officer in this series. Now there is a just man for you and a great leader and counselor to his young officers.
@ltflak actually i oppose that comment, america at that time could take on the british navy. old iron sides eh? wiped the garear by new england? i would like to recall that. america can take the british onto a naval fight man.
@smellincoffee actually yes ur correct but see my point is the british cant take down any1 they want i mean we just beat them in the revolution lol.. and dont give me crap abot it was all france the only reason y napoleon lost was that 5 nations man FIVE NATIONS helped them. not one.
Anyway. . . .(confused as to why youtube has become a personal dueling ground) back to the video, is it possible to hate Jack even more now? I liked Clayton dang it! Get 'im Horatio!
NamVetBuck, just shut your mouth and stop spouting crap. Once you've pulled your head out of your arse and formed a clear and unbiased opinion, then you can speak.
It is true that the US Navy won most of the single ship actions during the war of 1812. However, The Royal Navy still commanded the Eastern Seaboard. Everyone has their day in the sun.
LOL ! You obviously have forgotten the USS Constitution, Constellation, Bon Homme Richard, and the standing orders to NEVER attack American fast frigates sent to your "Royal Navy"...suggest you total up the wins losses of the revolution and War of 1812 ship to ship battles.
And over 200 years later , the US Navy is still the most powerful force afloat.
I think that we could beat your bathtub navy without losing too much equipment... our carriers are set up for ASW, and with the new Typhoons online, we can knock out anything you send at us. Bring your best, sir
Don't care about ASW operations, we have ships that do the same thing....but sub launched cruise missles would take care of those ASW carriers. Shot from a longer range than your ASw can fly.
Bathtub navy ? Hardly , our fleet has 11 carriers , and yours has how many ? We operate in 4 oceans , round the clock, and there is no place safe from the US Marines.
P-3?... Pissheads! Our Nimrods can easily find and kill them before they can even get close enough. If we could fight off the Germans without you help for a number of years, Then I think that we can defeat the bathtub navy
Captain Pellew is based on a real historical character of the same name, who was a very successful frigate captain. Accompanied by another frigate, he managed to take on and capture a French 74.
You can compare Hornblower to Sharpe. Hornblower was typical of midshipmen of the Royal Navy of the time, where as Sharpe is an Officer to come up from the ranks in an Army dominated by Aristocratic Officers who bought their commissions.
I saw that too. But what can you do it happens. I laughed at it too. :)
I loved Clayton. I remember watching this a couple years ago and crying a little when he died. I'm glad I can watch the show again even with the silly mistakes that I notice more now that I'm older. It was still a fantastic show.
Are those ships real or CGI? If they are real: WOW!

your carriers mean nothing when facing our new type-45's lol !!
BeefyStoner 2 years ago
Tell that to Tomahawk cruise missles fired 200 miles away...and suggest you look up, the B-2 just left you a nice 25 megaton present.
NamVetBuck 2 years ago
lol we have cruise misiles aswell, and megaton bombs, so whats your point ?
BeefyStoner 2 years ago
Got B-2's ? ...Ah, NOPE ! Point is = we can get em there, and you will NEVER see them ...and you can't do THAT !
NamVetBuck 2 years ago
what u don't think we have B-2 equivalents and other stealthy methods to get ours their ?
B-2 spirit bombers are pretty old now, there are stealthier aircraft than that.
Even if you did get them there without us knowing, which I very much doupt, we would just do the same.
BeefyStoner 2 years ago
Very cute...but failing in logic. You can't "send " your own if the B-2 got there first...nothing left to send !

Number of years ? Hardly, from june of 1941 to December of 1941 is NOT "years"...check your math.
Don't see much in the way of the Royal Navy taking on ANYBODY these days...now do ya ? LOL !
NamVetBuck 2 years ago
Well let us see? ww1 1914 - 1917?
ww2 1939 - 1941? And though we might not be doing much at the moment, at least our pilots do not shoot and kill thier own allies!
