Thanks so much for this! I just bought the steel bar pull from Home Depot for $10. It's not a standard size, but I got lucky because there was this exact size for a custom order that was returned. Started it today. Just have to drill and install now! Thanks again!
My vent assembly width from outside edge to outside edge is exactly 256mm (2004 bmw 325ci). Any ideas on a pull bar that has "v" shape arms so I can mount it on the vent assembly like your doing, but "v out" 20mm or so, so I can still fit the case through? My "smarty" case back is 246mm wide.
Great idea, this is exactly what I've been trying to do, a temporary mount that works with my case so I can take it out!
THIS is what I've been trying to do! I've been trying to use cable weaved through my vents so I can slide iPad WITH the case through it... Like you I don't to remove it from the case every time. Unfortunately it looks like my vents are too narrow on my 2004 bmw 325ci... do you know if there's a bar pull that juts out? My vents are about 9 inches across so I need it to be a little wider.
@dtschantz10 No I still haven't found a solution, but I haven't been looking as hard either. I'd love to hear if @CAnthonyVidal knows of a bar pull that juts out a bit so it can still be screwed into the vent assembly that's not quite as wide as the iPad case... so that the case could still slide through. The other option might be to have a plastic or metal part hand made for this... Does anyone know if there's malleable metal or plastic that has screw threads on the ends?
@t2nolan I'm sorry for the late reply guys. I haven't seen any bar pulls that fit that description. I looked online, what about a rectangle? One side would go flush against your dash, enabling you to put the screws where they need to be. Google "Rectangle Pull mockett.com" you should see some images of what I mean.
(I have never purchased from mockett. I don't know how good they are.)
I have the griffin Ipad case. I just installed the bar in my car. The case doesn't fit to well with this bar. Does the incase case slide onto the bar relatively easy? I have to fight with mine to get it flush. Over time, I think the case will warp or break. I might try the apple one to see if it's any better. If the opening in the bar was a 1/4 wider, I'd be home free.
@rmaher07 Thank you for your interest. I have used the incase book jacket (for 1st gen iPad). It is snug but does not damage the case. I've used this setup for the last 10 months and the case appears to have normal wear and tear. The original Apple iPad case (for 1st gen iPad) is thinner than the incase and will work even better. With that said, if I could make this bar, I would make it 2-3 mm longer to allow for and easy slip in to place setup. Much more than that and you will have movement.
@CAnthonyVidal The APPLE case works much better. Slides right in. The Apple case is a neoprene material, where as the griffin is leather. All well. This will do the job for now. Thanks for the tips!
@Ebonics101 nice catch. My brother said the same thing when he first saw the video. Actually it is a leaf from a tree in my front yard. This was a spur of the moment video to actually test the imovie app on the iphone. Thanks for viewing!
@pokkailo Good question. When you brake the iPad gets pushed into the stereo. When you turn, there really is no room for the iPad to slide along the bar. It's snug enough to not allow for that. If you accelerate, the power behind the V6 Honda will not be enough to lift the iPad with the case. (Maybe if you have a 12 sec car, but then it would be millimeters of movement). I guess if you were pulling a "Dukes of Hazard" jump then yes, it would flap up and down.
@pokkailo Now a problem I did come across is the pad resting on the stereo on and off button. As I would drive, or brake the iPad would turn the stereo off, or pushing the stereo button down in the "On" mode, causing the steering wheel controls to stop working. I fashioned a black ring to match the space around the button, and exceed it's thickness. Now the iPad has no contact with the button and rests on the ring. It solved the problem.
Thanks I think I might try that in my 2006 maxima. I have been racking my brain trying different things and so far nothing has looked good or worked for me.

Genius! It looks slick(with or without the ipad) and as you say, "You don't have to take it out of the case". I'll def give this a shot.
