I love the interaction of Youtube. I put my videos both here and Revver (because Revver has much higher quality, so I use that to embed on my site) but it's Youtube that I come back to all day, because when I meet interesting people who comment, I can check out their videos, and I can even communicate with video responses!
Oh, and I completely agree about this new shaky-cam "style". The Kingdom does it too, and it just ruined much of the movie for me, because it's poorly done. YOU do it better!
Since Youtube, myspace and Yahoo are putting up videos of everything under the sun,how are the television providers going to compete. We get lots of choice and some of that choice is absolute nonsense.Say..do we really need to see someones toddler running around on the carpet on Youtube.Who is going to decide what we see?The editors. But aha..why do they let us watch Jane goody! Heaven help us when there is no quality TV such a david attenbourgh documentary. The comedy is Ant and Dec? arghhh!
They're cutting Top Gear as well, Which I agree with, because paying for three guys to go galovanting around the world in cars isn't saving money and it certainly isn't saving the environment. What do you think Robert?
Aww I can't believe people leave you nasty comments like that though. I don't like it when people are nasty, especially to good people like you.
BBC Commissioning is shrouded in mystery, your treatment is passed around by the secret wizards of TV Centre, some make it to the Hidden Temple and get made, others are banished into the abyss for all eternity and never get made. Unless your agent sent a copy to Channel 4 and they make it!
I forgot to watch and comment for a while. Oops. Anyway yes, tv is mostly shite these days. I cannot stand what has happened to the vast majority of documentaries. A rea; shame, as even the really interesting nes end up gettinh a little annoying. Jeremy Paxman once again proved himself to be a bad dude.
yeah tv has become pretty shitty, my mum keeps watching shows like, Bigr Brother, X Factor, Im a celebrity and bla bla bkla bklablaskbdlabl and i ask her why dont you watch somthing somones writen or somthing with substence. But she wont have it, if the bbc makes sooooo much money why dont thay put the money up for a red dwarf movie ^_^
another thing, i also agree with the whole interactive thing. You may not have an idea of whos watching you on youtube but at least your get responses. whether it be "ah great vid man!" or "fuck off!" I don't watch tv anymore and spend most of my time watching youtube or flash animation at other websites because its where people are most creative. Its made me think about making videos. Great videos you make, always have a point!
lol, and other internet speak! just the cut scenes in bourne ultimatum kind of sum up alot of movie snow, or big blockbuster movies. Its almost saying "you don't have an attention span, so we're here to help you with that problem!" by doing all these cuts and shaky cameras. The Transformers movie is also guilty of this. i felt like screaming "stop with shaky cameras, i wanna see big fucking robots in full view!!"
OMG, I absolutely HATE wobble-cam! In the USA, it started with commercials. I guess the idea was to make it look like a home-made video so that viewers would relate to the actors as ordinary folk like themselves. Then it moved to TV shows, to add drama to scripts and acting that have all the charisma of melted lard. I just wish they'd treat their camera men better--it isn't nice to withhold their seizure meds.
Hoot! Excellent work Mr. R double L. I thought your iPlayer pod was shite, by the way, and said as much, but this week you've redeemed yourself. And you've saved me at least 30 quid by telling me that the Bourne Watsit was shot by the same sub-Blair Witch TOSSERS that the BBC seems to like to employ these days. Did you see Nick Crane's travelogue last night? Jesus, I swear the cameraman was on PCP. Post their name and I'll personally come round to the Meeedja Village and twat them.
Hahaha, was watching this in a quiet library and just burst out laughing when you imitated the whole 'shaky camera' thing. I'm getting a few weird looks now :P
Your vids are great Robert - look forward to watching more! :-)
Phone votes....Today on deal or no deal, my son wanted to call the quiz thing where you can win money. I said call it once and it said on the line that you can call up to 30 times per show. The calls cost £1 each and you dont stand a chance of being selected but take your money anyway and tell you "You werent lucky this time but please try again" So I bet some poor ( and stupid) person actually does call 30 times. Its madness.
I enjoyed the shaky cam in both the last two Bourne films, but I've recently notice its use in TV documentaries. It's trying to make the subject of the docco gritty and important when it actually trivialises the event in which it's exploring. You can see the journalists rubbing their hands in the editing room, thinking: "This is gonna get me that award."
I enjoyed the shaky cam in both the last two Bourne films, but I've recently notice its use in TV documentaries. It's trying to make the subject of the docco gritty and important when it actually trivialises the event in which it's exploring.
Shaky cam is the journalist's way of claiming he/she is more interested in the style of the finished film rather than the subject. You can see them rubbing their hands in the editing room, thinking: "This is the one that's gonna get me that award."
What a top class rant! Also good to be in the Sparticus video with you, when my son, Rory, saw it, he said 'Oooh! look, theres a man off the telly next to us on on the video. Did they sack him?'
Interactivity is good, yes, but check your emails for video responses. I think you get so many emails telling you of comments, you just delete them in blocks. I know of at least four video responses you haven't approved. Jus' lettin' you know. :-)
I don't know for sure but with all of the recent revelations (C4 Richard and Judy Scam, Blue Peter) I don't think they would continue to pull the wool over the eyes of the public under the noses of any investigative team.
on the haters: I generally agree with your "let 'em say what they want," but some comments are clearly merely posted because the poster had a tummy ache. I think comments should be constructive or they should be voted down, marked as spam, or something. they take away from enjoyment of the vid and the subsequent interaction, not only with the vid, but with other commenters.
Hi Bobby, I'm trying to get a series commissioned at the moment... What do you reckon, should I just give up now?! I reckon shaky cam can be good, but not all the darn time! I think it's nice to have some static shots for sure. I guess when they've got a huge budget to play with, they want to have a huge number of shots too... Anyways, great rantin' man! 5 stars! Dan =:D
I don't know what the haters are on about. I find you insights into the TV industry interesting to say the least. Actually interracting with someone we normally only see as an 'actor' is also an attraction. I like your attitude to the 'haters' though hehehe.
I'll look for the article; thanks for the steer, Robert.
One-way TV is not going to go away any time soon; but interactivity and on-demand viewing are likely to eclipse it. Suits me. TV is too effective at lulling us into a programmable state. People are less likely to be hypnotized if they can respond.
Don't see why the beeb still needs the license fee if they have 4 billion squids in the bank. Though isn't only the tv portion of the beeb in White City?
Another great video Robert, thanks, your stuff is much more entertaining than a lot of the rubbish on TV these days. By the way it looks like your beard trimmers give a pretty close shave, or have you been cheating and gone out and brought some razors? ;)
the shaky camera and the endless COMMUTING that his character does, in and out of taxis and metros and metrosexuals and... just a whole load of image.
Yay! I'm glad there's another Telly Talk...I really like these. It's very educational to hear about how things are run in the UK. It's a different model, but the similarities between British television and American television are eerily similar...i.e. a bunch of people sitting around in meetings to discuss their next meeting to go over the meeting before. And I don't think it's whining...if you did videos on how much you agreed with everything it would get pretty boring.
Yowzer! Great video, Robert! I've become very disillusioned with the beeb in the last year.. and the things you say here reinforce the underlying sense I've got of "the thing". And this new/trendy film/video technique that's been getting old now for the last 20 years or so. I recall seeing it creeping in on C4 first, and being thoroughly irritated even back then. It's spreading everywhere.. ugh! :(
you really talk a lot of sense which is really lacking in todays world to much bullshit over good common sense

Haha joking Robert, this is brilliant stuff and is spot on. You should have your own Charlie Brooker Screenwipe type show!
I did notice a lot of sudden cuts in this video though! WHY!? Are you deceiving your audience???? Are you hiding the true facts!
Anyways keep up the good work, it's always entertaining seeing stuff you do. More Telly talk please!!!
