  • just purchased the 609 unit. What is upconversion mean? All my sources including sony playstation and sat/cbl box are hooked hdmi. My samsung led tv already has a beautiful picture. can i improve my picture quality with my current system?

  • @ubm87 Please accept my apologies for the delayed response. “Up-conversion” usually refers to a receiver’s ability to take an analog video connection and convert it into an HDMI output. Most models with this feature will also take the SD video resolution (408i, 480p) and convert it into a higher quality (720p, 1080i, 1080p). Because all your sources are connected with HDMI, you likely won’t need this feature. Feel free to call for additional assistance: 800.315.0030--Crutchfield

  • is it possible to hook up 2 12 inch kicker subwoofers to the TX-SR806?

  • @makaveli1127

Is it possible? Yes. Is it a good idea? No.

It is not recommended to use car audio equipment for home use. Besides the fact that they are engineered for quite different listening environments, power, impedance, and voltage are inherent problems that discourage adaptation.

Keep the car subs in a car, and get a home subwoofer for home.

  • Dont buy onkyo they bad stuff Sr 606 crap after a year on the hdmi switching

  • @settinsun11 I Have the 706 and it is amazing runs like a top and was easy set up. Crystal clear even at high volume. I had a TX-DS787 for over ten years and it's still going strong I gave it to a friend of mine and he beats the crap out of. He constantly brings it to the tripping point and it still works. He had a marantz receiver before that and treated it the same way and it died after two years of his constant abuse. Yes, He's kind of an idiot, but I believe it shows the durability of Onkyo.

  • great review XD!! how much will either of them set me back??

  • @reddexred

Both of these are last year's models from Onkyo, there are new receivers out now that have replaced the 706 and the 806. You can find them at Crutchfield, or give us a call to discuss which one is right for you, and how much it costs.

    Thanks,

Well, dealing with that sounds like no fun at all. i can tell you from experience (I own two Onkyo receivers, both well past warranty age) and they continue to work flawlessly.

You do have a 2-year warranty on the Onkyo 706, so it's not too late to make sure your capacitor problem is fixed for you at their cost.

  • THX Select 2 Plus is NOT what the video says. It is THX Select2 Certified products are for medium sized rooms, up to 2,000 cubic feet in size, with a 10-12 foot viewing distance from the screen."

  • @vincedog3,

For a complete run down on each receiver's THX capabilities, you can get all that at Crutchfield.

On the Crutchfield website for any product you can click on "Hands on Research" for detailed descriptions of all the particulars, like THX.

You can also see the details of each level of THX certification at the THX website.

I believe all the info on our website, and in this video is accurate.

    I hope that helps,

  • She's hotz

  • Well i have a onkyo tx-sr803 and it does me good. i think onkyo products are good it does get warm but not hot at all.

  • I not sure about Onkyo quality, my brand new onkyo receiver has a hdmi port video issue has to reset after talk to a rep. And does get really hot at top. I had pionner now it is much cooler /

  • highonpsi,

If the signal coming from your satellite receiver is 4:3 then the picture will have to be stretched or "zoomed in" to get it to take up the whole screen.

So, either the Onkyo receiver is going to do that, or your TV will do that. You'll have to do a little trial an error to determine what looks best.

    Hope that helps,

  • so if i hook up a satellite receiver to it and it upconverts SD, does it also upconvert it to 16:9 widescreen with the proper ratio (not stretched) or does it just upconvert the picture quality and stay with the black bars on the sides?

  • I just ordered a "S" version sr806, I can not wait. driving Klipsch speakers and a 50" 1080 Samsung plasma

  • I am seriously loooking into getting an Onkyo, although I am a Marantz fan. Marantz receivers sound great, are generally less expensive, and more reliable than Harman Kardon and run really cool compared to other high-current receivers. But I notice the Onkyo TX SR 606 is an amazing value.

It can apparently generate 36 amperes of high instantaneous current, which a tad more than the Harman Kardon AVR 354, yet the Onkyo is way less expensive with far more features

  • Hi Thomasward100,

Sound quality is really what it all boils down to with receivers. You should do what I just did, go to Crutchfield, pull up all the receivers and compare the customer comments and ratings. Both Onkyo and Denon receivers are getting rave reviews and 5 out of 5 star ratings.

I've been a Crutchfield Advisor sine 1996, and most people I've talked with put the Onkyo and Denon on equal footing.

That was the long way of saying yes, Onkyo and Denon receivers sound great!

  • Johnny,

You are correct that the 606 upgrades to 1080i and the 706 goes all the way to 1080p. You get a couple other upgrades when you go to the 706 as well, like THX Select2 Plus certification, a better remote, Sirius and XM ready, a phono input, and Audyssey MultiEQ auto setup (606 has 2EQ setup).

As for the heat, Onkyo receivers do get a little warm, but not dangerously hot. As with any receiver they should be allowed to breathe so they can run as cool as possible.

  • Does the current Onkyo line match Denon in SQ and durability?

  • The Onkyo Tr sr-606 has gotten a lot of positive reviews, but it can only upgrade to 1080i, not 1080p like the 706. I have heard they run dangerously hot though...

  • my 706 doesnt get that warm, it does heat up but nothing close to dangerous levels, probably no more than my 8 year old kenwood amp would heat up, mind you i have never had it on for more than about 90 mins at a time so far

  • How does Harman Kardon AVR354 compare to Onkyo 806?

  • What speaker system would go well with the 706?

  • Superbanana,

The answer to that question depends on many other factors, such as room size, what you'll be listening to, movies, music, etc, where you want the speakers to be located and how large you want them to be.

You can get an expert's recommendation from any of the Personal Advisors at Crutchfield. Seriously, we aren't just here to sell you stuff, we can make sure you get the stuff that's right for you.
