well not really. the principle of VTOL was greatly improved by the Yak-141. It was built to compete with the Harrier but, it proved to be more successful because a lot of good marines died in the harrier. the F-35 was built to replace it but its initial design was created in the mid 80s. But the F-35's actual design comes from the F-22

@StiviGun1 Because they were going to replace them with Kuznetsov's, and later on with a catapult equipped design. The Soviets had a staggering number of incredible warship designs on the table. If your interested, i could give you a link to a forum that discusses this, and has many many photos schematics, and models of said vessels.

They had one that was a Kiev, adapted to the amphibious warfare role, and it looked very badass, with the typical Soviet twist of bristling with weapon systems!!

Any aircraft can easily be taken down by sand, jet engines are complicated machines, a low flying jet F-16 would have been just as likely to fall victim to sand. The Yak 141 isn't just unreliable, it's broken. Like I said, it can't even take off with a full fuel tank. Good concept, but in the end it just doesn't work.

F-35 can't train with PRC, it haven;t even made it into production. But I agree it sucks. For a bomber it carries only 2 JDAM/Paveway. For air combat carries 2 to max 4 Aim-120. Weight as much as F-105, Low cruising speed, low top speed/climb rate, high wing loading. Stealth can give F35 first shot, but under Jamming and evasion, AIM120 kill probability will be at best 50% with 4 missile volley. that's all the BVR you got, what then? do the dog fight with Flanker?
