Having heard a lot of Robert's speeches and being experienced in talking about things in ways that make no sense to anyone else ( :P ), it seems to me that Robert's way of speaking--indeed, he commented on it himself at one point in his online diary, I believe--is due to the fact when you apparently understand something in such a deep manner, it is impossible to communicate all of its facets in short, concise statements; one has to ramble a bit. But it's not pretentiousness. IMO.
Like very rare artists, Robert have own original philosophy, which still he builds, struggling with limitations of human mind and of course derive and basing on this what man have discovered and built. I very admire Him for beeing such a sincere, true man.
I think sometimes we would like to say in words something what is very difficullt to express in words. And then, listening to music, we find that this music tells it without any difficulty.
Wonderful series that you gentlemen did. I've watched several episodes here on Youtube, and I have to say that your interviews are some of the best I've seen on here. I wish that more musical interviews could be as intelligent and wide ranging as yours were.
I think I heard the interviewers snoring. Read the extensive liner notes fripp wrote for the 4 cd box and you will understand how analytical he is. He provides the whole painful history of kc. It is an education of how it was to be a successful musician at that time. Fripp here is a pandoras box of the music biz.
i don't think these guys realized just exactly WHO thery were interviewing here.....it's hilarious! when Fripp says: "where are these angels blowing trumpets in my ear?" as he looks up, so do they.....ha ha laugh out loud. The man is pure genius.
wow....i had no idea that this post would engender a harsh response....actually you are correct, I was born in Dec. 1973 and Crimso gave several tours the following year. Sorry bout that, I just thought it was funny when Fripp said "trumpets" and the 2 of you look around in the air, as if the trumpets were right there in the room with everyone. lol
@1herbiekritzer Better? There is no "better", just different people playing differently. Why compare Hendrix with anyone? This "who's best?" contest nonsense has nothing to do with why people play music, it's just something observers do to pass the time."Who's best?" No one is best.
It's easy to describe music in terms of words like "soul", but what does it MEAN? Nothing. It's just word association. There's no such thing as soul...only sounds & you either respond to those sounds or you don't.
'you can't tell David, he'll jump out the window...'....cop the westcountry accent! as a westcountry boy myself, i salute robert fripp. just for that inflection....another great figure from a fine corner of the planet
People tend to assume that a person great in one domain - say, playing guitar or composing great rock tunes - will automatically be great in most other aspects of life and therefore worth listening to and asking for advice. That is one of the greatest misconceptions I have ever witnessed in life; typically, being a genius in one domain tends to leave a person more or less clueless in everything else, and Fripp would be a fantastic example of that (as is Eno's imbecile dabbling in politics).
@eddievhfan1984 Well, not failing as such, just not the kind of excellence that would be on par with his musical talents. He is rather pompous and pretentious in how he presents his prog rock as a higher philosophy when, in fact, it is just prog rock - overcomplicated pop music. His whole fascination with basket weaving and planets aligning is exactly like his public demeanor, so nerdy, dorky and out of touch... a weird professor in his ebony tower. Great with guitar, funny otherwise.
I understand.Qualitative vs quantitative.Like the difference between a hopi farm where every stone and stick are designed to harvest rainwater vs a large tractor that erodes and oxides the soil.Point taken.
I really can't tell if he's being ever so slightly pretentious or very intelligent and articulate, it's probably a reflection of my own ignorance or stupidity though, it's just that some things he says I can't find the meaning in.
This comment refers to the entire interview, not this specific part.
@sinksinkswim quite a creative improviser, i would say, but not a composer in the classic sense where your piece is actually written down with a beginning, middle and end. But even the greats like Handel & Bach allowed "ad lib" and so notated their scores, to allow artistic expression on the part of the performers... very good interview! I am now an offal-folly-ficial Frippian.
His theories and ideals are WAY beyond what most people, even musicians think of music. This greater understanding of the sonic wavelength and how it effects us, or vise versa is reflected in his music.
And I agree with Poisonyouth, the interviewers DEFIANTLY were smoking the plant behind them,
Bloody brilliant. He and Eno are on a similar wavelength. And you can hear a bit of Bob Moog as well. They all look much further, much more deeply into music than the average person. Music is purely philosophical at its foundation.
Here Fripp is speaking of Quantum Mechanics and String Theory, yet he was doing so decades before such terms would be bantered about as they now are, pretty much daily, in coffee houses the world over. These men were so (are so for some) ahead of their times.
Did he make a decision to be a musician or a philosopher? He speaks quite strangely at times, reminding me of my old room mate, who was doing fourth year philosophy at university at the time.
thx a lot for this interview! I think that if bob sees this video he will ask for it to be removed. I don't think there is nothing compromising, in the answers but he would probably say that he was young and talking too much about inapropriate matters unrelated with the innocence of music and the interaction with the listeners
You know...he jumped through the topics but after watching it a few times...Fripp was being so incredibly personal. Way too personal for the forum! 1000 thank you's for rpcurtiss.
"I don't know how far to go into this one" says Fripp. But that won't stop him. Smart bloke to be sure. His references are on the tip of his tongue at all times. Love the shot of the two interviewers - or the gentlemen being spoken TO for six minutes - nodding their heads silently in agreement. Very Barbara Walters.

Stick to the music Robert. You'll be a 21 century schizoid man, if you think that much, Lighten up man, gees you sound like tom cruise with a brain, crazy and smart. Attributes I certainly admire, not I'll take my 140 IQ, bet I have less to worry about than you smart people so w/o an accident, I'll live longer so wouldn't that tend to be an advantage in the future, I bet he has never had any dirt on him in his whole life. He's just like a robot guitar playing computer. Dudes a nut case but cool,
His speach patterns are definately hard to wrap my brain around. Perhaps I can understand a small part of what he says, but I listen intently because he's the master.
He's an intellectual nutcase. Has anybody read or heard him talking about "small compact units" or "small adaptable units"? He thinks like I think except he's more eloquent and weirder. I love him but he worries me.
WTF does he talk bout?
