no, I understand minimalism, these guys were unbelievable. They still tour and now they sound like poo. They blew my mind on the album "black monk time" but now they sound like diarhea swishing around in a rusty thermos BTW lay off the "ahh yes to be a youth" talk.I'm sure you know many a folk older than you who are dumb as paint and listen to Creed.
This is the most "conventional" that I've ever heard them. And that's not bad, either! The Monks were too good to be true, as their "Black Monk Time" album readily attests.
just a little wrong.I wouldn't go as far as to say the beatles are over rated though.plus the monks sound really loose and awful at this point,I've seen a few live shows and they really don't have much left to offer
the beatles are overrated depending on the metric--their responsibility for modern music rests mostly on navel-gazing and name-dropping on the part of those so indebted
Oh com'on now, we don't need to do that. I have been a Beatles fan since age 3 but became OBSESSED with The Monks in Feb. of 2006 when I first saw them here on You Tube. On July 1, 2006 I got to meet Dave Day and Eddie Shaw at the premier of their documentary (now on DVD) in L.A.! I corresponded with Dave right up until he passed away last year. I have a picture of me and him at the premier hanging on my bedroom wall. He was a great guy. No The Beatles aren't overrated, just really BIG!
They were stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army, formed a band, and remained in Germany as The Monks after being discharged from the service. In 1967 they wanted to tour the States but their German managers booked them for a tour of Vietnam instead. That was the last straw and they broke up.
I'm guessing the guys were exposed to ska and blue beat while serving their time in Germany. The only ska record that actually made the charts here in the U.S. was Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop" in 1964.
I'VE GOT IT! I'VE GOT IT! I have the DVD! Both Beat Club performances are included in their entirety and they look fantastic! Ocasionally there is a hint of videotape squiggle but other than that? PERFECT! Dave has never looked better rockin' that banjo! And Roger's slightly annoyed facial expressions behind the kit are clear and priceless! If you like this band, YOU MUST OWN THIS DVD!
IT'S HERE EVERYBODY! THE DVD HAS BEEN RELEASED! I just ordered mine two days ago....I CANNOT WAIT! I can't wait to show family and friends what I expierenced in The Red Cat Theater in L.A. back on July 1, 2006. The sad thing for me will be seeing and hearing Dave talk. I know I'm gonna be crying! Dave was such a good guy, full of love for his fans! He embraced me like I was his grandson or something when he met me. Thank you for your contribution to rock and roll Dave! Rock that banjo in heaven!
MAY 5th! That's the date Amazon has for the U.S. release of the DVD. I knew this was probally going to happen so I'm not suprized. I just can't wait to get the darn thing. It's gonna be emotional seeing and hearing Dave. Afterall, I've got a picture of me and him standing together hanging on my bedroom wall! Miss ya Dave.
WE'RE ALMOST THERE FELLOW MONK FANS! I just checked Amazon and the DVD has appeared on the website but it's not available for pre-order yet. It should be available on March 13th! I'm only hoping they don't push the date back again, they already did it once, it was to be released on Feb. 27th.
THIS JUST IN!!!! The Monks documentary will be released on DVD on Feb. 27th, 2009 but will be available at Play Loud! Productions online store on Jan. 10th, 2009! The DVD will contain 70 minutes worth of bonus footage WHICH WILL INCLUDE all of the Beat Club performances IN THEIR ENTIRETY! It's gonna be MONK TIME all over again in '09 folks!
What a fucking great band! Thank you! I heard some of their stuff before but this is so damn tight! Best rock band after the Fall and Mogwai, with fewer lyrics/words than the stooges or velvets. Bliss!
Ah...gotta have my Monks fix! These guys are one of the most special bands I ever known my entire life. I discovered them on You Tube, I met Dave Day (banjo) and Eddie Shaw (bass), I did my darndest to turn everybody I knew onto them, and then Dave left us on Jan. 10th this year. Keep telling yer friends about The Monks oh fellow Monk fans. It's worth the battle!
Check out the brand new trailer to the documentary film "monks-the transatlantic feedback" that includes most of these wonderful German TV videos in pristine quality.
HALLELUJAH! THE MONKS ARE BACK ON YOU TUBE....AND IT'S ABOUT TIME! Thank you stdrange for uploading these again. I nearly cried when these were pulled the first time. Absolutely one of the best bands EVER!
It's not that the Beatles are overated it's Monks are underated.

This is pretty "conventional" for these guys...took bollocks to play a banjo in a rock group at the time.

I don't recall any other mid-60's white bands playing in a reggae style. These guys were light years ahead of their time.
Stephanjnj 2 years ago 2
That is so true! These guys were so innovative, the were basically post-punk BEFORE punk or even proto-punk! :D

Damn it, why is the label 'punk' so clingingly constant?!? It's totally goofy.

what time signature is this in?
glitchesandglitter 3 years ago
It seems to me that this is in a good old 4/4 time signature, but that's not derogatory in any way.
Just saying the words "watch this guy shredding on the banjo" makes these guys more special that most bands from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
