  • @marianmanilow - Thanks for that information. I know Nat King Cole's version is well known- this is of course very different- as Cole was very simple in his quiet style of singing- smooth- hard to compare them- just different. Wonderful lyrics. I have to say that whenever I hear them- especially sung with such beauty- a tear comes to the eye- and it makes me 'wake up and smell the roses'.. yes- to sweetness.

  • oh. Goosebumps, chills running 'up my spine'. One of the most beautiful songs ever composed in popular music- so interesting that it was the only one (?) Chaplin ever composed- I think. Who wrote the lyrics- Chaplin as well in '54? And Josh's angelic voice is the perfect instrument (beautiful piano accompaniment). Thanks so much for sharing- absolutely, absolutely. And I guess we can thank buddy Dave for bringing Josh to the 'world'. Aren't we lucky we never run out of fabulous music ?? Merci.

  • @lenoremewton Thanks Lenore, Goosebumbs are a good measuring stick for the affectiveness of music, and I guess it was a good thing Bocelli couldn't make it to that live performance of the Prayer with Celine back in '98 or else Dave wouldn't have went looking for a replacement.

  • @gerrymoran1 - oh, i did not know the 'inside scoop' on how Josh came to fame. Huh. I thought he was being promoted and Dave plucked him up. Well, they are all a nice ah hem, "Foster family" (no pun intended) now. Thank you for the goosebumps. Always ready and willing.

  • @lenoremewton I agree this is a stunning version of this song, the arrangement is exceptional. Charlie Chaplin did not write the lyrics for Smile. They were added to his 1936 theme by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. It isn't the only hit song he wrote. As well a many film scores he also wrote This is My Song, a huge international hit for Petula Clark in 1967, using the theme from his movie A Countess from Hong Kong. Clark had also recorded the British version of Smile in 1954.

  • @lenoremewton

Chaplin composed nearly all the music in his later films. He also produced, directed, and acted in them.

That man was amazing. How perfect that Josh would sing this!
