Interesting, but I would like to set the record straight. The footage was filmed by myself, Bakkies Laubscher,on Super 8 film on a Sunday in 1978 (I still have all the originals Super 8 reels) during the end of a training trip to Yoyogi (first time was 1973). Films were favour from Higaonna Sensei, and I find the publishing without the correct credits bad taste! It is not Kokubo Juichi assisting - a kyugrade called Taka!' Bakkies Laubscher 8th Dan, Higaonna Sensei's most senior student
@BakkiesLaubscher Hello Sensei, my apologies that I received bad information from the individual that gifted the video, and several post by other IOGKF members previously. I will correct the info. JP
This brings back great memories. I trained at the Yoyogi dojo Feb 78 till July 80. Higaonna returned to Okinawa later that year. That open door in the back led to a little shower area--just cold water. Japanese wouldn't use it--just a few crazy gaijin who didn't mind the cold. The bathhouse down the street didn't open till 4! Bldg was owned by the Aragaki family who lived in the house in front. Aragaki sensei has a dojo in basement of the new bldg, as of mid-80s.
Don't remember Ernie. I knew Brits Graham Ravey now in Aus, a monster! Nigel, S Bellamy briefly. Liam Keely from SA now also in Oz, a ginger Oz Mark very strong. Yanks: Glen Liman, NJ. Bruce Armstrong, AZ, Jerry Pattillo. Many others of course but those were the upper-rankers. Alanna H joined at that time too. She helped with the books!
I started from scratch there and only made it to yon-kyu. I had never done anything that intense. At the time it was just the dojo. Now suddenly it's history.
To continue...correction: Hunter Armstrong. He's into "hoplology" now. Wore a chain-mail suit to the dojo one day. A bit much.
Bellamy was the ranking gaijin at the time and signed me up, Higaonna was away. But he got asked to leave soon after I started. I was oblivious to most of the intrigue.
I saw Kato's sandan test. Terauchi put a pounding on him, but he passed. T was the only really fearsome J besides Higaonna.
Sometimes Aragaki's little boy ran through the dojo during class! Fun.
could you please put a description of the video in your info? [if you know that is] I recognize some of the kata done by sensei morio higaonna but not all of them and I would really like to know which they all are in order. Thanks in advance
well put by pecherin72, techniques are subjective and the principals are constant. oh no no no your target is blah blah blah, what the hell is in my way? we do it enough and it doesn't matter, wood, brick, person?
shisoshin0 Gek sai ichi - When he throws his elbow at chest height what is his target? After the elbow when he throws his reverse punch he will NOT hit his opponenet if he doesn't shift. I also find his mawashiuke to be way to choked up ... hopefully the guy is only going to punch at your chest or you can pretty much throw out his version. I can keep going, but it is getting late.
kirokyukan - this is a basic kata.. many meanings for all basic movements.. eg, first u'ke can be a block or an elbow/forarm smash to the throat.. to find striking points, do waza on wall, match with your body.. obviously you must adjust for a tall or short attacker.. okinawa tsuki straight from shoulder for max efficiency.. jap mawashi u'ke is 'beginners version' and for exercise,
Striking a wall and hitting a person are two very different things. If I were to use your advice my uppercuts would never leave waist level. Punching from the shoulders and not the hips is a completely new concept to me, can't say I believe it to be advanced though.
didnt say "strike a wall".. to find striking point [your question] do your technique, including "uppercut" in front of a wall, ending near, the wall, note point, move your body to that point = striking point..
Match up my body with the wall? Thats pointless, since i Cansee where it will hit just by matching it with my body. And when you do this with Hig. version you will only be elbowing to his chest in a manner that robs you of proper technique.
As far as blocking your face during a mawashiuke being a beginners way ... well maybe the okis don't need to block their face because of all that training, as for me I will have to continue to block my face/groin and using technique instead of strength.
you asked me, 'what is his target?' and 'he will NOT his' etc, the wall will find the target of a technique for your height on your body.. from the shoulder = in line with, the shoulder.. watch higaonna foot position, thus shoulder when striking makiwara, he doesnt miss.. unless this is a hoax, you are missing the point of your own questions..
Of course their are many techniques to block your face and groin, or mid section for that matter. But anytime you are blocking a combo to your face and mid sec you are naturaly doing a mawashi (without the strike). As for blocking to the sides this is not the intent, as I am sure you already know this part of the tech is for opening your opp. up in order to apply the striking part of the tech. Even if you are only blocking the mid sec. the application is the same.
Elbow into the heart region. If you practise it for many years, you'll kill a man with that. I've used elbow followed by reverse punch several times because the opponent was close and tried to go in for a grapple (if my elbow hadn't got him first) but you are right, if the guy was out of range, the punch won't reach him...kick him in the balls instead. You don't have to follow the sequence of the kata all the time.
Kata is there to practise certain moves as an exercise, When we really train bunkai, various movements are repeated over and over again at different angles and in different order or distances. kata is there to "remind" us that these bunkai exist and allow us to move from one posture smoothly into the next posture, that's all.
Thank you very much for the posting. It really helps at overlooking in the Internet. I have the videos in NTSC and was trying to put them in PAL DVD now that I live in Spain, but not possible. Camera broke. Here Eddy Winding, had ChoWa Dojo in California with the IOGKF and now restarting again after 6 years of pause. Thank you much.
Wow. You trained with him? Must've been incredible, and quite intimidating. Sorry for late reply to this message by the way.
I myself am very proud to say I've trained with my guys in Jo'burg in South Africa for most of my life. My senseis trained with H and came back with grins on their faces because H commented our standard is very high and the katas are 98% identical, other than speed of kata here and there.
Another correction. The name is not "Kokubo Junichi", but "Kokubo Juichi". He has been teaching in Perú since the 70's. It would be cool to add his name to the tag list, so Peruvian former and present students of him can find this video easily.
Thank you very much for posting this. It's very nice to see how Karate was the year before i was born.

i didnt say anything about blocking your face, you did.. what are you blocking out there at arms length to the sides with jap
mawashi u'ke? and do you believe there is only one technique for blocking face/groin
limited to the windmill mawashi u'ke ?!
shisoshin0 4 years ago

Oh and arms length to the sides is not proper either, they should be about 45 deg. to the front or else I loose contact with my opp.
kirokyukan 4 years ago
you asked me, where the elbow would strike, you made the statement that the reverse punch would NOT hit, the mawashi uke [tora guchi]
is sloppy, etc.. you use each response to
go off on another tangent..
for anyone who understands kata bunkai oyo there is no fault in this kata as demonstrated by Higaonna Hanshi..
apologies for this waste of space..

soft and gentle, radiating energy..
