Ignore the uninformed comments below - Futureman (the Pirate guy) did NOT invent that instrument. It's a modified SynthAxe that he nicknamed the Drumitar.
The Synthaxe was invented in the early 80's - Allan Holdsworth is the best known exponent of it. Futureman modified it to use percussion samples instead of melodic ones.
Each one of them is the very best at what they do. Together, they are beyond description. However, serious props to Bela for putting it all together. The Mozart of our generation... composer, conductor, virtuoso.
As it goes, I don't think Bela was completely on form on this one (that's just compared to his normal god-like prowess), but still great, and SUCH a good tune
...and yet, no-talent ass-clowns like 50 Cent, etc. get rich off of the general public's lack of musical taste while virtuosos like this get by like average Joe's. Makes zero sense.

I like progressive rock and rock/blues (in the Zep fashion) as well as jazz and fusion and find that the major differences are the beat used. Progressive rock is a lot like jazz in musicality, just different beat/style.

@hardtaill70 It depends...some people appreciate jazz music because it requires lot of music theory knowledge(that's the reason why it seems like they are playing different music, actually they play more "colorful" notes and people are not used to that when other music styles have less notes)...other just enjoy listening...it's the same like with any other genre, you can't learn to like it...

It has layers to it, and you can listen to it multiple times paying attention to different things each time. It takes some time to get used to it, but once you do, a lot of the more popular genres sound poor and stripped down in comparison.

Try listening to how the Bella introduces the main them and each instrument replays that theme but in a slightly different form. The theme moves and transforms only to reemerge in its original form at the end of the piece. You can do the same thing with the various rhythms that are present in the piece...
God I love these guys. This is one of my favorite Flecktone tunes. Saw them recently, they opened with this song. I got to meet them all after the show, greatest night and experience of my life.

@50itty They're doing freaky rhythm stuff. Namely, the hook they keep coming back to alternates between 7/8 and 10/8, (count to 7, then count to 10, and good luck counting to 10 with that fill in there), and repeat. Bela's first solo, and Jeff's first solo are straight 4/4... Then Victor's solo is 3 bars of 7/8, one bar of 4/4 - I would count it like this "1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3,4
@50itty also: Bela's little breakdown toward the beginning also has a unique count. It's 8 8th notes (if you want to call them 8th notes), and 6 8th notes. So maybe 3 counts of 4, one count of 6. Rehearsal and practice for stuff like this is probably a bit more like Indian music where everyone memorizes the taal by counting it vocally, rather than sitting down and looking at a bunch of sheet music.

Only retards watch this band only for wootens, i lisent wooten too, but with bela fleck wooten play a lot better than wooten alone.
I mean, i can lisent wooten solos, wooten in ying yang, but wooten with bela fleck and coffin isnt the same.
I see this band for firsrt time looking for wooten, but looking for more bela fleck music, u see this guy are like beattles, they are all esencial in the group equal, wooten alone = greath , wooten with this guys = better.

@tomaspepino only retards? victor is an inspiration to musicians and bassists around the entire world...i can definitely not say the same for bela, or coffin. i didn't say they weren't awesome....i said wootens were the key. and they were. give it up. but it's ok...you're aloud to have opinons that suck. ;o D

only because bass is more popular than banjo dont mean a good bassist is better musician and inspiration.
Bela fleck for banjo = one of the higest banjo player influence.
Victor = one of higest influence in bass.
Bela fleck and the flektons dont have a key, they all are they key, wooten alone is good but not ass good as with the band, and the band was idea of bela fleck no wooten.
And yeah, only retards watch this band ONLY for wooten.
They lost to much music close minded in 1 instrument.

@jareds1007 just because hes victor wooten doesnt mean he needs to have a constant solo..part of being a good musician is also knowing WHEN to solo and when to blend into the background...btw pointing out spelling mistakes when you cant even spell "setting" is just hilarious :]

@Frikkn so what does btw spell? oh, by the way.......i only ever pointed out grammatical errors, never a spelling error, and setteing is a typographical error i made. not a spelling mistake. i never said wooten had to solo all the time either. i said he's the reason the flecktones are none ...(or is it known, you would no/know you're the spelling GENius). which isn't right. get your facts straight. i was done arguing on this videos comment secion about five months ago.

@FangedFlame yeah...no...i have compassion for people....just trying to see what if i'll ever get it back...she definitely passed 6/29/10 ....i have certificates and tons of debt to prove it....she said she was scared, but a priest went to the hospital to bless her, and he told me she said she was ready.... :o ( ....nodoby was there when she went....she died alone. i suck. you're right.

if i have you musician point about bands and music i will think daddy yankee is a master in musician for his popularity, but no i can see deep inside a group, a real group dont have a key , that dosnt exist in Good bands.

Drumitar sucks! It sounds like an amplified typewriter. A band of otherwise world-class virtuosos is diminished by their percussionist who plays an instrument that is nothing more than a novelty. Werid and original, yes, but it sounds like ass. Get a kit dude.

@Xylophunk hehehehe... Dude rocks on kit, too. But I feel the same way more or less. I have a fantasy that he was like "hey can I be in your band?! I'll play kit! And the rest of them were like, "no dice, dude, you've gotta play an axe." So then he goes into his basement techie science lab and works for two months putting together the drumitar, reemerges on the full moon as futch with the axe, and says something like "Ecce axe!" "I'm from the future, This thing is gonna be a big deal!"

@GavnatronTarasattva Exactly! I know Futureman is a skilled percussionist who can play real drums like a motherfunker...I just don't understand why he DOESN'T !!! The synthaxe drumitar maybe one-of-a-kind, but it can't hold a candle to an actual set of drums. Why would you play a less-agile, imitation sound of the real thing? Because it looks futuristic when you wear it? It's Stupid.

@50itty They're doing freaky rhythm stuff. Namely, the hook they keep coming back to alternates between 7/8 and 10/8, (count to 7, then count to 10, and good luck counting to 10 with that fill in there), and repeat. Bela's first solo, and Jeff's first solo are straight 4/4... Then Victor's solo is 3 bars of 7/8, one bar of 4/4 - I would count it like this "1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3,4

@50itty also: Bela's little breakdown toward the beginning also has a unique count. It's 8 8th notes (if you want to call them 8th notes), and 6 8th notes. So maybe 3 counts of 4, one count of 6. Rehearsal and practice for stuff like this is probably a bit more like Indian music where everyone memorizes the taal by counting it vocally, rather than sitting down and looking at a bunch of sheet music.
