    It is called SynthAxe, a guitar MIDI controller, but modified - he replaced the guitar sounds with drum sounds. He calls it "drumitar".

  • Ignore the uninformed comments below - Futureman (the Pirate guy) did NOT invent that instrument. It's a modified SynthAxe that he nicknamed the Drumitar.

    The Synthaxe was invented in the early 80's - Allan Holdsworth is the best known exponent of it. Futureman modified it to use percussion samples instead of melodic ones.

  • @hardtaill70 Jazz is music from the soul. These guys are playing together and the music just flows. A lot of it is improvised. I like progressive rock and rock/blues (in the Zep fashion) as well as jazz and fusion and find that the major differences are the beat used.  Progressive rock is a lot like jazz in musicality, just different beat/style.

  • I'm a "Blues/Rock" guy and while I am trying to appreciate/understand this... I simply do not. Can anyone please help me understand why jazz seems to be a handfull of musicians all playing different music at the same time? Are they warming up or is this the way it was supposed to be?

  • @hardtaill70 It depends...some people appreciate jazz music because it requires lot of music theory knowledge(that's the reason why it seems like they are playing different music, actually they play more "colorful" notes and people are not used to that when other music styles have less notes)...other just enjoy listening...it's the same like with any other genre, you can't learn to like it...

  • @hardtaill70 It all fits together very well, you just kinda have to be a musician to appreciate it. It's probably nothing you'll ever get :P

  • @hardtaill70 The music is just more complex than rock or blues. Instead of just laying the basic base for the main instrument, they lay a more complex base. It has layers to it, and you can listen to it multiple times paying attention to different things each time. It takes some time to get used to it, but once you do, a lot of the more popular genres sound poor and stripped down in comparison.

  • @hardtaill70 This song is structured more than most jazz. You probably just need to listen to the song a few more times before it clicks.

  • @hardtaill70 The first player defines a set rhythm, or sequence of notes, at a pretty fast, set speed. When the second player is ready to jump in at the set speed, he does so at the 'beginning' of the first player's set rhythm and speed but then increases the set speed by a note or two, thus forcing/inviting the first player to have to play faster to stay in the song. The third player has to jump in at the 'higher' speed, again, at the beginning of the sequence, and up the speed. And so on.

  • @bradley1107 It's an acquired taste for most people (including me). I think that's what makes pop music, well popular--It's more easily grasped. These guys are artists, and they're not out to simply sell records, but to play what they want to play imo.

  • @karatepopcorndefendr Probably because it's not in a "mainstream time signature". 4/4 tends to get boring after a while and this kind of music is pretty damn amazing.

  • @bradley1107: To each his own, but I would agree that you don't speak their language. Try listening to how the Bella introduces the main them and each instrument replays that theme but in a slightly different form. The theme moves and transforms only to reemerge in its original form at the end of the piece. You can do the same thing with the various rhythms that are present in the piece...

    Bela fleck for banjo = one of the higest banjo player influence.

    Victor = one of higest influence in bass.

    Bela fleck and the flektons dont have a key, they all are they key, wooten alone is good but not ass good as with the band, and the band was idea of bela fleck no wooten.

    And yeah, only retards watch this band ONLY for wooten.

  • Drumitar sucks! It sounds like an amplified typewriter. A band of otherwise world-class virtuosos is diminished by their percussionist who plays an instrument that is nothing more than a novelty. Werid and original, yes, but it sounds like ass. Get a kit dude.

And the rest of them were like, "no dice, dude, you've gotta play an axe." So then he goes into his basement techie science lab and works for two months putting together the drumitar, reemerges on the full moon as futch with the axe, and says something like "Ecce axe!" "I'm from the future, This thing is gonna be a big deal!"

Namely, the hook they keep coming back to alternates between 7/8 and 10/8, (count to 7, then count to 10, and good luck counting to 10 with that fill in there), and repeat. Bela's first solo, and Jeff's first solo are straight 4/4... Then Victor's solo is 3 bars of 7/8, one bar of 4/4 - I would count it like this "1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3,4
