  • In the spirit of sound hermeneutics, including the placing of scripture in proper historical context, this presentation starting with Matthew 5:17 harmonizes what appears to be inconsistencies (for me at least) between Matthew 5:31 and 32. Verse 32 at the very least appeared to me to be inconsistent with 31 and at most to override 31. But the historical context linked with verse 17 allowed me to understand Jesus' answer to the question put forth by the Pharisees.

    Thanks Russell. You obviously understand how important it is to observe that Jesus, before saying anything about the Jewish men putting away their wives, said he was not going to change the Law--not even a little. That can only mean that He did not contradict Deut. 24:1-2, which allowed divorced woman to marry. rw
