I had to honor not only to grow up listening to Lee Moore, but also getting to know him in his later years when he lived in upstate NY...even meeting his wife and going to their home. I still a picture I took of him and his wife at their home. They didn't come any finer than Lee Moore.
well, sir...gotta share! i grew up in Maine years ago listening to Lee Moore on WWVA. i'd come home from school on friday, and at midnight, i'd listen to the 12:00-5:00AM show just to hear Lee pick his guitar and sing. i wanted to play and perform just like him! that was back when country was country! thanks so much for sharing!
I used to lieten to him til wee hours of the morning when i was a kid in Nova Scotia in the fifties. He used to get a beatiful sound out of his guitar. I got to see live at the Edison Hotel in Toronto in 1968, what a thrill form me. He was just as good live as on the air. He even did a little magic act between set. An extremely talented man.
@guymelanson I have seen Lee only once in person when I made this video in 1995, but I have listened to him for many years on WWVA, I liked his style and picking.
This video brings back so many wonderful memories. I used to listen to the OLD COFFE DRINKING NITE HAWK on WWVA many many years ago. I am 71 so you can guess how long ago that was.. This was one of my favourite songs and when I learned to play guitar, I sang it at a lot of parties. I loved the way he picked that guitar and copied his bass runs. God bless you Lee From your fan up in Canada Harvey
Would you happen to have gotten any footage of him playing his Dobro, or as he put it, his "Hawaiian Reso-phonic Guitar", and if so, would you please put it up?
Used to listen to the "Coffee-Drinkin' Nighthawk" nightly on WWVA as a young boy in what seemed like another country -- the Bronx, New York. Owing to the hour, I had to hide from my parents under the blanket. His voice, his program , that music and those nights have never left me.
(If you know Juanita) that's my great aunt, so Lee Moore was my great uncle technically, before they divorced. I was only 6 in 1995, but my family has videos of him and my aunt Juanita playing at my grandpa's house. We got it recorded, I'll try to get it on the computer and put it up. :]
The video's we have are on VHS, so we're currently burning our childhood vacations to Disney onto DVD, lol. But, we're also burning Family Reunions and stuff like that, but I do have lots of pictures. Most of my family played with Lee and Juanita. Juanita's full name being "Juanita Picklesimer" if you want to do research, I guess.. lol Thanks!
Posting is out. I have been playing for many years and loved to copy styles, Lee was one and Mac Wiseman's A chord runs was another that I loved. You don't hear this style of playing any more. Tks Wayne
Hello Again, Ilistened to Lee and wondered how he got that sound out of his guitar, it wasn't until years later I realized he had the guitar capoed and played out of the A chord. I do have his runs down pat. I loved the guy. Also on a visit to Wheeling years ago I met Doc Williams in the music shop across from the Jamboree, we chatted for quite awhile. Chickie was in the hospital at that time. Great chatting, Wayne
This is the version of the song my Dad used to play to me including the last part with the kittens in the hay-I think it's a more satisfying ending to this song having the kittens in the hay, don't you think?;-)
old64goat: WWVA continued: I also listened to WCKY from Cincinnati. I used hear Don & Earl flogging their Gospel song book from 7 to 7:15 PM. week-nights "Send one dollar to Don & Earl, that's Don & Earl, C/O WCKY, Cincinatti, Ohio". I listenedd to the WWVA Jamboree when I came home untill the wee hours until the station would fade around 5 O'clock Sunday morning. I felt so lucky to pick up those stations in Toronto. Listening to Lee Moore brought back those memories.
oldgoat64: Lee would pour the coffee, add milk and , I think, sugar, stir and tap his spoon at the side of his cup then slurp it over the micrphone. I always had a radio in my room and I discovered WWVA around 1955 when I was 13 years old. The first song I heard was Here Stands The Glass by Webb Pierce. I always loved country and bluegrass at an early age. I used to listen to Lee Sutton from 7 to 10 am flogging those cuckoo clocks supposedly from the Black Forest of Germany.
To old64goat: I also listened to Lee More on WWVA every night as a kid growing up in Toronto. 1955, 56 57. He used to go through the ritual of making coffee. Made me thirsty for coffee at two or three in the morning. I also learned the crosspicking to this song from listening to him. He had that D-28 tuned perfectly. Lost a lot of sleep getting up for school. Sorry to hear he passed away. On a vist to Wheeling, Doc Williams told me Lee was living in Vermont.
Hi Ken, When I was working all night in a resturant cleaning floors I used to hear him mixing coffee and he would say: "It's Coffee Drinking Time with Lee Moore The Coffee Drinking Nighthawk" clank clank went the spoon in the cup.
He was one of a kind, he would pick on his guitar and sing.
Back in the early '50s we would get out of work (Pratt & Whitney Aircraft- East Hartford, Ct) on Friday midnight and travel back home to Lake Champlain in Vt. We would listen to Lee Moore all the way. "THANKS FOR THE MEMORIZES"

@Garr1984, I don't know I will have to check, these videos were made on 8mm video tape so they have to be converted.
If I have it it will be dark like this video, that camera was not good in low light.

Hi again Wayne, I met Doc & Chickie back in the late 60's when they did a show in our area.
Wayne, I would like to hear some of "Lee" style guitar runs, can you post a video?
I have never heared anyone else do his style.
