I'VE GOT A GAL IN KALAMAZOO
(Mack Gordon / Harry Warren)
Glenn Miller - 1942
Also recorded by: The Andrews Sisters; Lous Armstrong; BBC Big Band;
Tex Beneke; Big Band; Boston Pops Orch.; Tony Orchestra Burgos . . .
OMG at 1st I thought cool song till the two men came out and danced they stole the screen. Wow so light on their feet and them splits GOD i don't know about any of you but i think i just sprained something watching that !! ,, awesomeness at its finest! This is when people actually had talent ,,
Miller's music and many films of the War era may seem awfully corny today, but the music was wonderfully melodic and optimistic. I wish I could say that about what I see and hear in the mainstream today. Apparently, all the hatred is sinking into the collective - just look at all of the hateful comments right here.
@fartchunk your point "fartchunk"? I just found it funny the two crazy jazz dancers come out right at 4:20 cause you know how those jazz types are with their "reefers" and all.
Don't ask me why but watching this brings a big smile to my face. Its before my time but I love all these great old songs. People seemed happier and more human then, unlike today, most go around so damned grumpy! Thanks for this. P.S. The lady singing in the middle is just great!
That 'broad' was Marion Hutton, younger sister of the actress Betty Hutton. Marion was a foster child of Glenn and Helen Miller. She joined the GM band in '38 at the age of 17.. At the time she made this movie est '41 she would have been around 20 and if anyone had made a move on her they would have gotten throughly thumped by half the band. (The other half would be waiting in line for their turn).

@fartchunk wrong wrong wrong. Unlike ladies today, back in these days they had something called "class" which you showed everyone here you have not an once of
I believe this is basically the original Glenn Miller Bnd but Cesar Romero, shown here, was never in his band, I don't think. I read that he started out as a ballroom dancer, probably in New York. They must have stuck him in here for some reason. He probably could play the piano a litle bit.
@hbogart44 yeah it's right several of the band members in the movie were actors. they were just added to the existing band to cover major roles that needed true actors
This is a movie right? because Ceasar Romero the actor was never a piano player for G.M.band and Jackie Gleason is the base player. He was never in his band.If I'm wrong I stand corrected?
This number is nothing short of American classical music. Brilliant in every way. Fun, catchy, up beat, excellent arrangment, exciting and perfect vocals. Five stars.
Let's see the world was at war, the country was still on the heels of the great depression, what did Americans do? Pulled together as a effort to aide the allied forces, worked hard and Hollywood put out entertainment to show off the great talents from this country, as well as give everyone a needed break. More or less the opposite of how we handle everything today. We're such a selfish and greedy nation now. :-(
amen brotha. i look back at how the greatest generation pulled it's shit together for the common good of man and i weep. we are sooo doomed. i see no hope for the future but thank God we have youtube so that we can at least take a journey back in time and listen to the best music and watch 'em swing in their prime.
I was listened Led Zeppelin and heavy metal as a teenager, but I love this big band, swing-era stuff with the smooth vocals, groove, etc. I envy my Dad who was a door man at the Palais Royale in Toronto when he was quite young, and got to see all these bands.
Yes, that's Jackie Gleason on the base fiddle, actually played in the Miller orchestra by 'Trigger' Alpert, Cesare Romero on piano, actually played by 'Chummy' McGregor, and George Montgomery on lead trumpet, actually played by none other than Ray Anthony. Vocals by 'Tex' Beneke who also was on sax and Marion Hutton and the Modernaires. Miller's 'movie' orchestra was easily his tightest and best, assembled from the best of his dance orchestra and sessions musicians he could assemble.
@madcitymcflyerAt the time this was filmed in 1942, Trigger had left the band. The bassist was Doc Goldberg who had played in the Ray McKinley band. The trumpet player for George Montgomery was Johnny Best not Ray Anthony. Anthony never played any solos with the band.

Every time I listen to Glenn Miller and his band and I like to see everyone play their instruments I think of my grandparents. My Grandparents and this generation that were married for 50+ years, worked hard to raise their children, fought and served their country. My Grandfather, married for 50 years with my Grandmother raised 6 kids, house paid for and only made $20,000 a year. Mortgage payments were $100 a month and worked at the same company for 35 years. Those were the days!!

Love it. An all-time great video. Watched it last year with Elvis at the Kalamazoo Burger King.

The white guy "Tex" singing is completely dopey looking, almost retarded while the blonde is just smoking hot. Very Cute.
