  • "...one of the greatest dance routines ever in movies..."

THE greatest dance routines I've ever seen!!! Great clip...thanks for posting it!

  • Tex Beneke-Legend!!!

  • Thanks, DarkShark190, for the name of the singer here. The article on her in Wikipedia was most interesting. My wife and I have hard this song many times of the years, for the simple reason that we lived in Kalamazoo, Mich., for many years. My wife, of course, is a real pipparoo!

I'VE GOT A GAL IN KALAMAZOO

    (Mack Gordon / Harry Warren)

    Glenn Miller - 1942

    Also recorded by: The Andrews Sisters; Lous Armstrong; BBC Big Band;

Tex Beneke; Big Band; Boston Pops Orch.; Tony Orchestra Burgos . . .

  • love that

  • OMG at 1st I thought cool song till the two men came out and danced they stole the screen. Wow so light on their feet and them splits GOD i don't know about any of you but i think i just sprained something watching that !! ,, awesomeness at its finest! This is when people actually had talent ,,

  • Who is the female singer?

  • @MatthewsVideo1 Marion Hutton

  • Vote no for sopa so we can keep our glenn miller on youtube!!! :'(

  • I once watched one of the Nicholas brothers give a talk on this bit. This is a true inspiration.

  • 1:05 :D that was funny

    ABSOLUTLY SUPER SONG !

  • Ilove the Nicolas Bros. ,Tex and The Modernaires harmony ...is just incrediable

  • Thanks for posting... I love the Nicholas brothers...great dancers and entertainers.

  • Miller's music and many films of the War era may seem awfully corny today, but the music was wonderfully melodic and optimistic. I wish I could say that about what I see and hear in the mainstream today. Apparently, all the hatred is sinking into the collective - just look at all of the hateful comments right here.

  • The dancers come out @ 4:20 lol

  • @munk237 no class eh?, 420 hmm....

  • @fartchunk your point "fartchunk"? I just found it funny the two crazy jazz dancers come out right at 4:20 cause you know how those jazz types are with their "reefers" and all.

  • Don't ask me why but watching this brings a big smile to my face. Its before my time but I love all these great old songs. People seemed happier and more human then, unlike today, most go around so damned grumpy! Thanks for this. P.S. The lady singing in the middle is just great!

  • i bet that one broad get railed by all thoes dudes

  • @fartchunk I'll bet she didn't.

That 'broad' was Marion Hutton, younger sister of the actress Betty Hutton. Marion was a foster child of Glenn and Helen Miller. She joined the GM band in '38 at the age of 17.. At the time she made this movie est '41 she would have been around 20 and if anyone had made a move on her they would have gotten throughly thumped by half the band. (The other half would be waiting in line for their turn).

  • @ryindy way to ruin it, douche bag. and yeah.. youre right.. 20 is to old

  • @ryindy Marion changed the family name from Thornberg, too?

  • @fartchunk wrong wrong wrong. Unlike ladies today, back in these days they had something called "class" which you showed everyone here you have not an once of

  • 2:41 What are you doing? What are you doing???!!

  • WALL RUN BACK FLIP WITH TAP SHOES D: PHYSICS=BROKEN

  • I love these guys (the Nicholas Brothers). They are so fantstic. I love watching them, no matter what they're doing.

  • i love jazz, i'm even in a nice high school jazz band, but Glenn Miller is so damn cheesy.

  • @MrBluescluesboy let me know if you ever get as big as he was.

  • i get the primus song now

  • I'm Commenting Live from the Zoo Bby we on the map Holla at us! And thts Kalamazoo, Michigan, 269 FOO

  • How the hell did we get from this kind of music to Teen Angel??

  • So graceful! Two fred Astaire's on one stage!!

  • My best salute to the Great Gleen Miller.

  • Beneke was smooth on that sax....plus dude had some mellow pipes

  • Amazing!

  • This is my hometown, and where I am right now!!!!!!! Go Kalamazoo

  • Just added my thumbs up! There should be a two thumbs up icon for stuff like this!!!

  • Great, fantastic entertainment! - I've been watching too much "So You Think You Can Dance" rubbish - I badly needed this clip.

  • This video is amazing! First, this song makes me want to dance. And second, those tap-dancers are vary talented.

  • Is Glenn Miller himself there? Or is it just his orchestra...

  • @cat2556 Miller is playing the trombone..

  • @cat2556 21 seconds in he pops up.

  • Kalamazoo FTW

  • zooo zooo zooo

  • Ahhh, im 15 and I LOVE this guy! His music is so.... elegant, yet rugid at the same time!

  • carlton sent me here

  • I believe this is basically the original Glenn Miller Bnd but Cesar Romero, shown here, was never in his band, I don't think. I read that he started out as a ballroom dancer, probably in New York. They must have stuck him in here for some reason. He probably could play the piano a litle bit.

  • WOW.

  • Holy cow - man can they dance!

  • @hbogart44 yeah it's right several of the band members in the movie were actors. they were just added to the existing band to cover major roles that needed true actors

  • @MAashChick The actors replaced Doc Goldberg on bass, Chummy Magregor on piano and Johnny Best on trumpet.

  • This is a movie right? because Ceasar Romero the actor was never a piano player for G.M.band and Jackie Gleason is the base player. He was never in his band.If I'm wrong I stand corrected?

  • 0:24 On the trombone... Stephen Colbert!

  • Or if you like really lame or redneck girls. Oh wait, you must.

  • and those negroes

  • I live in Kalamazoo, trust me, there is no girls here.

  • My grandma Alice (rest her soul) was a Kalamazoo girl. Got me hooked on the big band era music when I was a kid back in the early 80's.

  • AHAA IM 14 N I LOVE THIS KIND OF MUSIC(:

  • Love these sounds of the Big Band ERA. Listening to songs like this makes everything okay. raychapa01

  • Fabulous & The Nicholas Brothers are just phenomenal, what incredible talent there was back then. Nothing like it now !

  • Glenn Miller band sucks...

  • A B C D E F G H I gotta gal wears her toenails long

  • YEAH thats Jackie Gleason on bass

  • Radar...M*A*S*H

  • Glenn Miller, Tex Beneke and the Modernaires (Who's the female member BTW?), the Nicholas Brothers...finest kind.

  • @radicalgnostic9 Marion Hutton,

  • Tex Beneke era o favorito de Glenn.

  • I love this Music, raychapa01.

  • Notice that Jackie Gleason is playing standup bass!

  • back in the day b-boys' battles seem to have been way more friendly

  • It doesn't get any better than this. Glenn Miller's stuff was always in the pocket. Musicians know what that means.

  • 14 dislikes!? how can anyone not like this?

  • @jpbabiera Could be that they have been brainwashed by to-days sounds and don't recognize good music when they hear it!

  • Unbelievable that anyone could dislike this! This is great stuff! Too damned bad music and entertainment in general has become so ....... crappy!

  • thumbs up if you know it because of prince of bel air :p

  • @krimosibi Which episode? Kinda gotta see that.

  • some old guy told me about this song in mass yesterday

  • @SouthSideCrusade That's so cute! Let's all agree to do the same when we're old, and if we are already, time to start! ;)

  • oh god if i could tap dance like that id rule the world

  • 1:06 is proof that trolling is a very old art.

    btw love the video ;)

  • i always get so giddy when this song comes on the radio.

  • 1930s drunk girl is very similar to 21st century drunk girl.

  • This number is nothing short of American classical music. Brilliant in every way. Fun, catchy, up beat, excellent arrangment, exciting and perfect vocals. Five stars.

  • 14 people don't have a girl in Kalamazoo

  • Vídeo muito raro. Esplêndido!!!

  • Tex tried to take the piano player's music. Silly Tex.

  • Now THAT'S music and dancing!

  • omg these tap-dancers are AMAZING!!! :):)D:D:D:P:P

  • That music soared! Little did we know that the rest was down hill when we hit the mid 50's.

Todays music is so music-less and so sad.

  • Geezer Pick of the Day 07/31/11

  • Top Notch.

  • Great all-around! And those Nicholas Brothers! Wonder if they ever pulled a hamstring with those splits?

  • LOOOOVE this band and the the Nicholas Brothers. Thank you for posting!!!

  • Very Good! Tank's for its.

  • I sing this song to my mates all the time, they have NO IDEA what the hell I'm going on about hahahahahahahahaa

  • Let's see the world was at war, the country was still on the heels of the great depression, what did Americans do? Pulled together as a effort to aide the allied forces, worked hard and Hollywood put out entertainment to show off the great talents from this country, as well as give everyone a needed break. More or less the opposite of how we handle everything today. We're such a selfish and greedy nation now. :-(

  • @tonybklyn

amen brotha. i look back at how the greatest generation pulled it's shit together for the common good of man and i weep. we are sooo doomed. i see no hope for the future but thank God we have youtube so that we can at least take a journey back in time and listen to the best music and watch 'em swing in their prime.

  • @yarbles67 A big thumbs up!

  • 1:05 :) lol

  • I love his teeth!

  • SENSACIONAL !!!!!!!!!!

  • I was listened Led Zeppelin and heavy metal as a teenager, but I love this big band, swing-era stuff with the smooth vocals, groove, etc. I envy my Dad who was a door man at the Palais Royale in Toronto when he was quite young, and got to see all these bands.

  • This was great fun and a nice break from the gloom and doom I've been watching. Thanks.

That was some steppin' in that last part, exceptional!

  • Yes, that's Jackie Gleason on the base fiddle, actually played in the Miller orchestra by 'Trigger' Alpert, Cesare Romero on piano, actually played by 'Chummy' McGregor, and George Montgomery on lead trumpet, actually played by none other than Ray Anthony. Vocals by 'Tex' Beneke who also was on sax and Marion Hutton and the Modernaires. Miller's 'movie' orchestra was easily his tightest and best, assembled from the best of his dance orchestra and sessions musicians he could assemble.

  • @madcitymcflyerAt the time this was filmed in 1942, Trigger had left the band. The bassist was Doc Goldberg who had played in the Ray McKinley band. The trumpet player for George Montgomery was Johnny Best not Ray Anthony. Anthony never played any solos with the band.

  • @madcitymcflyer It was his regular band apart from the actors!

  • Free run at 7:13 :D

  • 1:15 The harmonies kill me! They had to just eat, sleep, and breathe rehearsal!! Especially the purely chord-distinction harmony. wow!

  • Nice to see a young Jackie Gleason "playing" bass. One of my favourite films. Quite corny, but entertaining.

  • ive got a gal in kalamazoo

  • Not sure what they call that figiting around on Earth that goes on these days. Those brothers are REAL dancers. And how can 14 people not like a voice Tex!

  • All I can say is AWESOME!!! Great music and Unbelieveable dancing!!

  • What ever happened to that unique style of Harmony...something that just seemed to belong to the 40s

  • is he just randomly grabbing the pianists sheet music ? this is so hilarious :D

  • Every time I listen to Glenn Miller and his band and I like to see everyone play their instruments I think of my grandparents. My Grandparents and this generation that were married for 50+ years, worked hard to raise their children, fought and served their country. My Grandfather, married for 50 years with my Grandmother raised 6 kids, house paid for and only made $20,000 a year. Mortgage payments were $100 a month and worked at the same company for 35 years. Those were the days!!

  • 14 people dont have gals in kalamazoo

  • Pire vidédo que jai vue de ma vie, Honte au cinéma !!! pauvre marde

  • So good......... timeless history.. should be compulsory for showing in young schools!

  • anybody saw the fresh prince episode where carlton was singing this?!!

  • excellent

  • i have two tabs open, guess which one I'm favoring more...

  • who disliked! >:(

  • primus?

  • Everything's o-K-A-L-A-M-A-Z-O-Oooooh

  • I'd love to hear today's "singers" try this without all the voice enhancers.

  • @Handiman544 Amen to that!

  • @Handiman544 hahahahaha...get serious.

  • @Handiman544

    Here! Here!

  • @Handiman544

No problem I know people who can do it ! :-)

  • @Handiman544 michael buble..you listen to his concerts and its identical if not the same as the recordings

  • @Handiman544 ...or the musicians play that in-tune and together without auto-tune or editing.

  • @Handiman544 Singing isn't that hard, mate

  • ABCDEFGH ABCDEFGH ABCDEFGH I GOT A GAL THAT WEARS HER TOENAILS LONG

haha thumbs up if you understand.

  • ABCDEFGH ABCDEFGH ABCDEFGH thumbs up if you understand.

  • The blonde singer is Marion Hutton, Betty's older sister. It's a pity the two died estranged. At one point Marion jerks her head so violently her 'rat' is dislodged. That' what women of the 1940's used to make those neat pompadours on their heads.

  • Primus has an awesome revised version of this song called Kalamazoo! The lyrics are different and the beat is different, but the lyrics start out the same. It is a pretty good song if you appreciate Big Band sound and Primus' take on it. A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H I got a gal and she ain't from Kalamazoo!

  • Beneke sounds so American. A perfect voice for the times

  • The black men about halfway through are S-E-X-Y!! :)

  • Forgot to say.... those tap dancers are awesome!!!!!!!

  • @winterlonelywolf Wow, no kiddin!

  • This is real music at its best!

  • The Nicholas Bros achieved widespread international acclaim before they died. ( not so long ago). Is it just me, because I'm old (72). Or were these times – the 1940s – very special in terms of the talent that was around?

  • @akanippy Couldn't agree more!

  • If someone came and told me that the Nicholas learned to fly before they died, I wouldn't be surprised.

  • Blake Griffin @ 1:34 hahaha

  • i was studying KEynes, and i had to watch this, those were good times!

  • @Loxleiev P.D: 6.35 HOLY MOLLY!!!!!!

  • if u're driving on I 94 and need to stop and use the bathroom, kalamazoo is good for that. that's about all it's good for.

  • @exbronco1980

    THAT IS NOT NICE

    NO NEED FOR THAT!!!!!!!!!

  • Magic

  • Marian Hutton was Betty Hutton's sister. If you've ever seen Betty Hutton sing, some of the mannerism's & facial expressions Marian expresses in this song match to a tee Betty's style. It's no wonder these two dolls were popular in WWII and long after the 40's ended as well. Check out Betty Hutton's "Murder He Says" and you'll what I mean.

  • I certainly hope that Tex and the colored fellow aren't singing about the same girl. That would be awkward.

  • I'm from Kalamazoo ^_^

  • Love it. An all-time great video. Watched it last year with Elvis at the Kalamazoo Burger King.

  • Does anyone know who the girl singer is?

  • Wish I were alive back then. This is music.

  • The Nicolas Brothers.....my word!

  • The white guy "Tex" singing is completely dopey looking, almost retarded while the blonde is just smoking hot. Very Cute.

  • Only the good die young; applied first to Glenn Miller. American Hall of Famer for sure!

  • what an ass

  • no actually the ones that need help are you and your ancestors.. you slaughtered the north american indians to get this land and were the ones that are racist? we have a right to be racist u lynched our babies and women everyone for nothing u damn right i hate you krackers.. according to the bible you will be inslaved as you done us so im at peace
