Wood as used in the Spruce Goose, should be thought of an early form of carbon-fibre composite, and not what you make packing crates with per se. Carbon fibre composites are now used by Airbus and Boeing without condemning the practice as making planes out of cheap plastic. And the Spruce Goose, by using wood, managed to be a forerunner to the Airbus A380 in size and carrying capacity. It just didn't have powerful enough engines to make it work properly.
Don't see why everyone was busting his balls about making it out of wood. They wouldn't give him any metal. What was he supposed to build it with...bamboo and duct take?
Had it been made out of aluminum I doubt it would have left the water. Anyway, his team of designers pioneered some really innovative methods to make the wood strong.
The WW2 fighter bomber the DeHavilland Mosquito was mostly made out of wood too and it was remarkably strong and rigid. Its wooden design also meant German radar had trouble seeing them, and they were fast enough to outrun fighters chasing them.
Even if they built 100 of them out of aluminium, there would probably be about 1 or 2 in airworthy condition now. The same can't be said for a Douglas DC-3 of course because they are so versatile, can land anywhere and you can patch them up with tracing paper.
I do hope you know that Howard Hughes HATED it when people called the Hurcules a "Spruce(D) Goose" so if you are doing this in any way to sound cool you are really making your self sound like an idiot.
I didn't call it that to sound "cool". That was the nickname for the plane, and it is known not only as the Hurcules, but the Spruce Goose, hence why it is appropriate for the title.
truely a beutiful aircraft too bad though if only it had more powerflu engines could have been more of a success... neway what is this song called????
The HURCULES H4 was supposed to be equipped with jet engines, but because the military canceled the project Hughes slapped on just enough engine to get it in the air. Amazing and brilliant person, sadly so many personal issues.
You know, I don't really think that thing "flew" as it was supposed to. I mean it was just barely off the water. I think THAT was the reason Hughes never flew it again...beause he knew after that first flight, that was as high as it was ever going to fly. Great animation though!
"The hercules was a monumental undertaking, shes the largest plane ever built. Shes more than five stories tall with a wing span longer than a football field, thats more than a city block! Now I put my sweat and my life into this thing, I got my reputation all rolled up in it and Ive stated several times if the Hercules fails to fly I will probably leave this country and never come back. And I mean it!"
cool visuals but wtf? i mean is this the blueprint of what they used in the movie(the aviator) seems like it, or did you jus copy it yourself? pretty cool its the way of the future the way of the future the way of the future

Guys...I know WHY he built it out of wood. The original comment was, "Why did everybody bust his balls about it." He had no other alternative.
FrontSide407 2 years ago
if he did build it out of bamboo & duct tape it would still be wood so there you go.
ebgb6 2 years ago
Where did you get the plane from it looks really cool and faithful to the original.

it was WW2 man metal was hard to come by. Wood was everwhere.
bryjb10 2 years ago
Because metal was being used for guns, ammunition, tanks and ships in WWII.

@FrontSide407 He was supposed to build it in a CAVE! With a BOX OF SCRAPS!

Hughes probably worked with a similar mindset.

very nice video. :]
people need to stop being asses and banging on you for the video and title..
to be honest, more people know the plane as the "spruce goose" than the h4 hercules, so i'd suggest getting over it, people.
on my visits to the evergreen museum, pretty much everyone referred to it as the "spruce goose".

Jet engines on a sea plane? I fell asleep during the aviator but this plane has always fascinated me.

Yes, jet engines. If you've seen the movie then you'll notice after he interview for the H4 flight he gets into talking about jets.

Good stuff. I like Howard at the controls. But I hthink it'd be even better if you'd have used music from 1947.
